Fourteen-year-old Harini Logan won the Scripps National Spelling Bee last Thursday, defeating 12-year-old Vikram Raju in a tiebreaker. It's the first time that the contest has ever been decided by a tie-breaking round of spelling.
A spelling bee is a contest where players take turns spelling words. Though the bee is mainly about spelling, it also focuses on the meaning of the words. During parts of the contest, students were asked to choose the correct meaning of a word.
That caused trouble for Harini. She was asked about the meaning of the word “pullulation”. She said the word described the nesting of birds. The contest organizers had expected the answer to be the “swarming of bees”. Harini was removed from the contest. But soon she was back in- the judges double-checked and learned that Harini's definition was also correct. One by one, the other students spelled a word wrong and got out. Finally, only Harini and Vikram were left.
To make ties much less likely, a “spell-off” was added to the contest in recent years. In the spell-off, Vikram and Harini each took turns trying to spell the words they were asked, but both made blunders. At one point, Harini could have won by spelling the word “drimys” (a kind of plant) correctly. But she missed it.
That put the two into a super tie-breaking event, where they were each given 90 seconds to correctly spell as many words as they could. The New York Times reports that the two spelled so quickly that the judges needed to review the video to see who had won. In 90 seconds, Vikram had spelled 15 words correctly, Harini had 21 correct spellings, making her the new winner.
This was Harini's fourth at the Bee and it's the first time she's made it to the finals. Describing her win, she said, “This is just such a dream!”
    24. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the spelling bee?
    A. Its significant meaning. B. Its competition content.
    C. The importance of spelling. D. Players’ struggle for spelling.
    25, What happened to Harini?
    A. She failed to enter the final round.
    B. She was confident about her answer.
    C. Her answer was misjudged at first.
    D. She refused to accept the judgement.
    26. What does the underlined word “blunders” mean in Paragraph 4?
    A. Efforts. B. Ways. C. Senses. D. Mistakes.
    27. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
    A. A Tie-Breaking Event
    B. Scripps National Spelling Bee
    C. Teen Wins Spelling Bee in Exciting Tie- Breaker
    D. A Girl's First Time to Make Her Dream Come True
    C
Sunflowers are huge plants with bright yellow flowers. They have a long history in North America. There is evidence that they were used for food and for medicine by Native Americans beginning around 1000 B. C. The seeds from sunflowers were likely brought to Europe by Spanish explorers around the late 16th century. Over time, they found their way to Eastern Europe. Today, Ukraine is the world's leading producer of the plants. Sunflowers are grown for their seeds and to make oil.
If you start growing sunflowers from seeds, put them in room-temperature water for 2—8 hours before planting to start the growing process. Plant each seed into dirt 2. 5 centimetres deep and 15 to 30 centimetres apart. Plant them after the danger of frost has passed or start indoors three weeks before your last frost date. Keep the soil wet, but not too wet, until the seeds begin to grow.
Sunflower plants can be moved outdoors when the danger of frost has passed in your area. Choose a place outside that will provide the plants with at least 6- 8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
As the plants grow, they will develop long roots that work their way deep into the ground. So, before planting, it is important to loosen the soil. Dig at least one third of a metre down and remove any rocks.
Mixa large amount of compost(堆肥) into the soil where the plant will grow. Compost provides important, lasting nutrients that will help the plants all season long. The sunflowers may not need additional nutrients if they are planted with compost. If compost is not added during the planting process, provide nutrients through a slow release, all-purpose fertilizer(肥料) one or two times during the growing season.
    28. What can be known about the sunflower in Paragraph 1?
    A. It originated in South America.
    B. It was initially used to make oil.
    C. It has a history of 3,000 years or so.
    D. It was taken to Europe by British explorers.
    29. What are sunflower growers advised to do?
    A. Keep the seeds in water for 10 hours.
    B. Plant seeds 2. 5 centimetres apart.
    C. Never put new plants in direct sunlight each day.
    D. Plant seeds indoors 21 days before your last frost date.
    30. Why is it important to loosen the soil before planting?
    A. It is friendly to roots’ growth.
    B. It helps to hold water in the soil.
    C. It guarantees adequate supplies of air.
    D. It is more efficient in keeping temperature.
    31. What are Paragraphs 2- 5 mainly about?
    A. How to select sunflowers. B. How to grow sunflowers.
    C. When to fertilize sunflowers. D. When to move sunflowers.
    D
Fashion rental has been on the increase for a few years, similar to trends such as up-cycling and charity shopping. It seems likely to be another pandemic related trend, pushing people to think about fashion consumption and sustainable living—a positive to come out of an isolating two years. Maybe more sustainable way of looking and thinking about fashion is the industry's future.
According to Fashion United, the fashion rental market is “expected to grow more than 10% year-on-year until 2027”. Rental is a positive in the rapidly changing world of fashion. It is not a trend; it is a solution to limiting the unnecessary production and consumption of clothing.
Sue Ingle, owner of Heavenly Hat Hire, says her main customers are “those attending weddings and races”. Discussing the cost of living, she explains how “people are unwilling to pay £200 for a hat they may only wear once”, so paying a percentage of this on a rental is more affordable and therefore more accessible to a wider audience.
Fashion rental is widening its market. Luxury department stores such as Selfridges and Harrods join forces with rental companies to provide designer items on loan. So why go to a smaller business? From purchasing experience, small businesses often have a more personal feel with extra touches, which are not needed but much appreciated. Heavenly Hat Hire invites customers to book an appointment to try on hats. Sue names the hats to give them a more personal feel and loves it when a customer comes in telling her “I don't suit hats and never wear them”, then an hour later leaves happily with a hat in hand.
If the pandemic revealed anything to the fashion industry, it is that no brand, no matter its scale, is completely secure. We should support the companies thinking about environmental impact and making improvements to become more sustainable. Small businesses providing this as well as exceptional services should get all our support.
Fashion rental is around to fill the gap in your wardrobe when necessary. As Sue says, “We all need to buy less and love what we already have a little bit more.”
    32. What does the author intend to show in Paragraph 3?
    A. The change of fashion.
    B. The reason for the rise of fashion rental.
    C. The promising future of fashion rental.
    D. Rental's accessibility to a wide audience.
    33. Why are Selfridges and Harrods mentioned in Paragraph 4?
    A. To prove fashion rental's huge profit.
    B. To introduce some famous clothing brands.
    C. To show fashion rental gains popularity.
    D. To appeal to more stores to join in the trade.
    34. What type of smaller businesses should be chosen to cooperate with?
    A. Fund-saving. B. Flexible and movable.
    C. Fast developing. D. Eco-friendly.
    35. What is the author s attitude towards fashion rental?
    A. Approving. B. Critical. C. Objective. D. Unclear.
Maybe your days are always busy. Between work, caring for kids and handling the housework, it's hard to find time to relax. When you get into bed, you find yourself picking up your phone and just scrolling(滚屏). 36 This behaviour is called “revenge bedtime procrastination(报复性唾前拖延症)”.
It comes from a phrase that describes the habits of workers who put off sleep to have free activities as a way to make up for long workdays. 37 Not getting enough rest affects the way you will function at work and at school the next day. In the long term, it has harmful effects on health. Here are some ways to break the cycle of bedtime procrastination.
Get out of bed and do something.
Get up and finish that thing for work. Or walk around the house and wash dishes- whatever will settle your mind. 38 Then you could go back to bed and fall asleep just fine.
    39
Minimizing how much light gets into the bedroom promotes sleep. Consider setting up blackout curtains(遮光帘) or room-darkening shades. Cooler temperatures can also help sleep better. If you don't want to run the air conditioner or a fan all night, try rethinking what you wear to bed.
Make a bedtime routine and stick to it.
Take a bath, change into pajamas(睡衣) and curl up(蜷曲着坐) with a book before turning out the lights. A bedtime routine helps young children relax before bed. It works just as well for adults. 40
    A. But the behaviour comes at a price.
    B. Create a good sleep environment.
    C. Decorate your room according to your needs.
    D. At most times, you will get really sleepy.
    E. The more you can create regularity around sleep, the better it's for you.
    F. You make every effort to control your own time, but in vain.
    G. You stay up past your bedtime, despite being tired and knowing you'd better go to sleep.

I was a beautiful Friday morning as the sun shone brilliantly. The pond was shining invitingly. I woke up to the sound of the birds singing outside my window and realized that it was the day of the award ceremony. I had won the “Most Valuable Player” award for my school's soccer team and was extremely proud of myself. I rushed to my parents’ room and kept jumping on the bed, asking them to wake up. I said, “You need to take me to school for my prize presentation ceremony!”
My parents got off their bed unwillingly. I went to wash up and took my whitest and straightest uniform to prepare for my ceremony. By the time I was ready, my parents had already prepared a tasty breakfast for me and we set off after breakfast.
While my parents were driving me to school, they told me not to be anxious as it was a very quick process of walking u the stage, collecting the prize and walking down the stage. When we reached the school, my parents wished me all the best and went to their seats to watch the ceremony.
First to be awarded was the Spelling Bee team. They went up on stage and collected an extremely large bee trophy(奖杯). Next was the “Most Valuable Player” award, My parents took out their cameras and got ready to take a video of me. I puffed up my chest(挺胸) and walked up the stairs to the stage.
My heart raced uncontrollably as I went upstairs. I was suddenly feeling nervous. At the top of the stairs, my legs were shaking and I fell on the ground. At that very moment, the audience burst into laughter. My face went red and my mind went blank.

    1~5 BACBA 6~10 CABAB 11~15 BCCAC 16~20 BCACA
根据Climb The O2中的“Reserve your seats before availability as they are limited.”
Search for a National T rust site 中的“Although its focus may be different by region, the basic role is to preserve historically significant items and areas of natural beauty.
Explore the soul of Madrid中的“... in celebration of the food, art, and music to be found in both the Spanish and English capitals.”和Go and see a West End show中的“There are impressive performances on at the moment... and other musical dramas.”
根据第三段“But soon she was back in—the judges double- checked and learned that Harini's definition was also correct. 可知,C项“Her answer was misjudged at first.
根据第四段第二句“In the spell-off, Vikram and Harini each took turns trying to spell the words they were asked, but both made blunders.
A项“A Tie- Breaking Event”不能全面概括全文,故不合适;文章不是主要讲这个比赛,而是在比赛中的具体事件,故B项“Scripps National Spelling Bee”不合适; D项“A Girl's First Time to Make Her Dream Come True”一个女孩第一次实现梦想,根据最后一段“This was Harini's fourth at the Bee and it's the first time she’s made it to the finals.
故选A。
根据第五段最后两句“We should support the companies thinking about environmental impact and making improvements to become more sustainable. Small businesses providing this as well as exceptional services should get all our support.”
根据第一段的“pushing people to think about fashion consumption and sustainable living—a positive to come out of an isolating two years” 以及第二段中的“Rental is a positive in the rapidly changing world of fashion... it is a solution to limiting the unnecessary production and consumption of clothing.”可知,作者使用了大量褒义词来描述时尚租赁这一趋势,如“positive, sustainable living, limiting the unnecessary production and consumption of clothing”等,显然作者对此趋势持赞成态度。故选A。
前一句说的“I couldn't remember what the tutor had taught me”, 属于stupid, 而非其他。
    42. A
根据上句中的“transferred from one school to another”可知,作者反复转学(switching schools)。
blow up爆炸;放大(照片);发脾气;lift off起飞,腾飞;turn around旋转,转过身来;改变意见;出现转机;go downwards走下坡路,朝下行。
根据本段最后“they were Special Olympics athletes”可知选A。
故选A。
attach... to... ;compare... to...把.……比作…….devote.... to...将……奉献于……;owe….to….
“a number of+复数名词”谓语动词使用复数,“the number of+复数名词”谓语动词使用单数。根据谓语动词is可知,此处使用the number of。
three of them意为“它们中的三只”。
此处为定语修饰名词environment ,使用动名词表示用途,相当于a good environment for living。
先行词Hefei City在定语从句中作地点状语,the lake is located in Hefei City, 故使用where。

    One possible version:
I gathered my courage to get up and continued walking. When I stopped to collect the award, all the parents stood up, clapping and cheering me on, congratulating me, and trying to calm my nerves. Unfortunately, my heart kept pounding wildly, and I ended up dropping the award on stage. I fell on my knees and desperately tried to pick up the broken trophy. My heart sank. I wished the ground would open up and swallow me in that instant.
As I walked down the stage on the way back to my seat, embarrassed, I thought my friends would make fun of me. However, to my surprise, they apologised for their rudeness and inconsideration. I was taken aback by their response and told them that everything was all right. Their support made everything better. After this fateful incident, I learnt to be careful the next time there was an important event with a large audience,in order not to make a fool of myself. I also realised that it was embarrassing to be laughed at. Therefore, I made a promise to myself to never laugh at others when they have an embarrassing moment.

    (Text 2)
M: Did you have any trouble finding a place to park? You have been away for so long.
W: No. I met Lily in front of the shopping mall and we talked for a while.
    (Text 3)
M: The city government has decided to build a school for disabled children here.
W: It's high time. I don't know why it took so long.
    (Text 4)
W: Good afternoon! How can I help you?
M: I want to borrow some books, but I don't have a card. Can I apply for one?
W: Sure. Please fill out the form.
    (Text 5)
W: Excuse me, sir! Where were you last Friday evening? And who were you with?
M: I was staying in a hotel in town. I was with a friend.
W: What is your friend's name?
M: Peter. He can prove that.
    (Text 6)
    W: What time is it,William?
M: Uh, it's 7:30. Aren't you going to finish your breakfast?
W: I don't have much time. I've got a lot to do downtown today.
M: If you're coming into the city, we may as well have lunch together.
W: OK. Let's say one o'clock. I'll go to the gym. I have a gymnastics class until 12:15. Oh, and the lunch will have to be someplace quick.
    M: How come?
    W: I have a hair appointment at 2:15.
M: Oh, OK. Enjoy your day. I'll see you later.
W: You'd better get going, too. You're not even dressed yet.
M: Don't worry about me. I'll get to work on time.
    (Text 7)
M: Hello. This is Bright Star Restaurant.
W: Oh, hello. I want to make a reservation for this Friday. Do you have a table for four on Friday evening?
    M: At what time?
    W: 8 o'clock.
M: Let me check... I'm sorry. There are no tables left at that time. But there will be tables at half past eight and one at nine o’clock.
W: Half past eight will be fine. I just want to ask something else. I have a friend from Italy and two friends from France. Have you got any Italian food and French food?
M: No problem, madam. We have three Italian dishes and four French dishes on the menu.
    W: Sounds great.
M: A party of four at half past eight on Friday evening. May I have your name, please?
    W: Susan Brown.
M: OK. I've written everything down.
    W: Thanks. Bye.
    (Text 8)
M: Hi, Kate! Why are you dancing? I thought we had to study for our maths test!
W: Hi, Bill! I was just exercising. It is my favourite way to get relaxed. I thought you would arrive later. Let me turn the music off.
M: OK. When it comes to exercise, I prefer playing soccer.
W: Sports like jogging and playing balls are good ways, but I like to dance better. Do you sometimes do it?
M: Yes, but I am not a good dancer. Oh, my team won the final last week.
W: Cool! I know you go to the gym to practise every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
M: You're right. It's hard work, but it is worth doing.
W: I see. If it weren't for the maths test tomorrow, we could hang out right now.
M: Right. No more fun and games. Let me get my notebook.
    (Text 9)
W: Do you have any ideas on what we should present?
M: Perhaps we can choose something that we haven't dealt too much with, so we can present the class with new information.
W: I'm thinking of employment actually. You know, there is so much talk about it in the local news recently. Just a few
months ago, there was a company which had to lay off over 1,000 people... what was that called...
M: Oh, yes, Stone's Throw. It is a clothing company which makes clothes from local resources, you know, cotton and wool from local farmers. Its clothing is more expensive because of that. And, well, its clothes weren't necessarily of a better quality than other clothes...
W: So the selling point was...
M: I think Stone's Throw marketed itself in this way- -if you buy our clothes, you are supporting the local economy. So people were willing to pay higher prices for their clothes... Well, there have been some problems with the local economy lately and people have less money and they have to buy cheaper food and clothes. So Stone’s Throw started losing money and had to reduce its size. . .
W: Sounds like we have a nice topic. Now, let's go to see if the professor thinks this is a good idea...
    (Text 10)
M: Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please! I'll recommend two hotels to the passengers who are going to London on this flight. The Swan Hotel is a pretty small hotel. The good thing about it is that it's not far from the airport, which is handy when you're travelling abroad. Of course, that means it's not ideal for tourists who want to see a film or enjoy a concert. All 35 rooms are double rooms. Though the hotel charges a big fee, all the rooms are very comfortable. Each room has a TV and a safety box for keeping your valuables in. Every room has a broadband Internet connection, although you have to pay a small charge for that. I suppose it's a typical business travellers’ hotel, but it is also OK if you’re just staying overnight to take an early flight. You can book rooms online. All major credit cards are accepted. You can pay in cash or by check too. The Backpacker Hotel is pretty near the centre of London. They say they’re only 10 minutes’ walk from the underground station. So you can take the underground when our flight lands, although it'll take more than an hour to get there. They've got 60 rooms. They don’t have an Internet connection in each room, but they have a little room which they call their business centre. It has a fax machine and an Internet connection. That's pretty good for a cheap hotel. They take cash only.
