Its distinctive architecture is attracting the attention of many engineers worldwide. This bridge includes a variety of routes at different levels. It features “a diversity of routings“ on different heights, providing several routes for walkers to take as they cross the river.TOWER BRIDGETower Bridge is a symbol for London. The bridge has two Gothic towers and the walkways which cross between the two towers. Visitors can visit the Tower Bridge from the north side of the bridge and watch the bridge for structural engineering. And then from the bridge at high channel across the Thames, enjoy the beautiful scenery on both sides.BROOKLYN BRIDGEBrooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States, connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn. The bridging of the East River was a lengthy and complicated business which saw many men getting injured in the dangerous working conditions of the time. The bridge is now a much-loved feature of New York and can be seen in many television shows and movies.CHARLES BRIDGECharles Bridge’s first stone was laid by King Charles IV. The bridge today offers something of a short history of Prague and Czechoslovakia. A recent renovation saw the original statues being replaced with modern replicas and the originals carefully removed to a museum. Whenever you are in Prague, be sure to wander over the Charles Bridge.1Where is this text probably taken from?AA news report. BA travel brochure. CA science book. DA business journal.2Which bridge can most probably be seen in films?AUndulating Bridge. BTower Bridge. CBrooklyn Bridge. DCharles Bridge.3What can we know about Charles Bridge from the text?AIt’s a symbol for British architecture.BIt has a troublesome construction history.CIts original statues can be seen in a museum.DIt enables visitors to cross the river via different routes.BClimate activist Henry Emson told Euronews that when he became a father seven years ago, he was worried about his family’s effect on the environment. After doing some research, he found the best way to eliminate their carbon footprint was by planting giant sequoia trees(巨型红杉树).Giant sequoias are ideal for capturing carbon dioxide because they continue to grow consistently for centuries, storing CO2 over time. General Sherman, the world’s largest sequoia tree, has stored an estimated 1,500 tons of CO2 in its trunk over the last 2,200 years and could live another 800 years. The average human could generate close to 1,000 tons of CO2 over their lifetime, so planting one giant sequoia could effectively reduce the carbon footprint of more than one person. After realizing the power giant sequoias have to fight climate change, Emson devoted his life to planting thousands in the UK by creating the One Life One Tree project. Its final goal is to plant 100,000 giant sequoias in the UK by 2030, and according to The Mirror, as of March 2022, it has already planted 700. Trees are currently being planted near Abergavenny in Wales and the project is expanding to Devon, the Lake District and Scotland. While the common assumption is that these giant trees can only be grown in Northern California, they actually do well in the UK at a time when the sequoia population is threatened back home.According to One Tree One Life, 95% of the old-growth sequoia population has been logged over the past two centuries and what remains is under threat from climate change. “A 10 yeardrought and temperature increase have greatly damaged the health of the trees. A secondary impact of the drought is making them increasingly susceptible(易受影响的)to insect attack and fire,” the site says.Considering the danger that climate change is causing giant sequoias in California, Emson’s work also benefits these trees. “They’re like climate refugees(难民)—we help them with assisted migration,” he told Euronews.4What does the underlined word “eliminate” in the first paragraph probably mean?AMeasure. BRemove. COverlook. DSpread.5How does the text mainly show giant sequoias’ ability to store CO2?ABy giving an example. BBy doing an experiment.CBy making comparisons. DBy referring to comments.6Why did Henry Emson launch the One Life One Tree project?ATo protect the environment by planting trees.BTo test the adaptability of giant sequoia trees.CTo save different kinds of endangered trees.DTo prove the value of giant sequoias to his kids.7What can be learned about Henry Emson’s work?AIt disturbs the whole ecosystem of California.BIt indirectly turns giant sequoias into refugees.CIt helps promote the survival of giant sequoias.DIt assists California in recovering from drought.CIt wasn’t until I graduated from college that I subsequently realized that knowledge is so endless that I was able to learn for pleasure. A sense of curiosity, rather than perfectionism, guided me. I started to see dictionaries as field guides to the life of language. Looking up words encountered in the wild felt less like a failure and more like an admission that I still didn’t know lots of things and an opportunity to discover more.I cherish my 1954 copy of Webster’s New International Dictionary given by my roommate. I often consult it during the evening games of Scrabble or midday magazine reading. I mostly read novels at night, in bed, so when I come across unfamiliar words, I fold the bottom of the page and then look them up word by word. When I start encountering these words, the language world seems to shrink to the size of a small town.Wikipedia answers questions with more questions, opening up pages of information you never asked for. But a dictionary builds on common knowledge, using simple words to explain more complex ones. Using one feels as if I’m opening an oyster (牡蛎)with curiosity. Unknown words become mysteries, and solving them gives me satisfaction. Why always leave them up to guesswork? Why not consult a dictionary and feel the instant contentment of pairing context with a definition?Dictionaries reward you for paying attention, both to the things you consume and to your own curiosity. They are an entrance into the kind of childish urge to just know things, which I had before learning became a duty instead of a game. For most of you, dictionaries are a gateway into that kind of unconsidered knowledge-seeking. They remind you that, when it comes to learning, allowing your curiosity is just as important as paying attention. After all, isn’t curiosity really just another form of attention? Following your curiosity instead of pushing it away, consult your dictionary and feel connected to more than what’s right in front of you.8What does consulting dictionaries mean to the author?AA guide to shape his character.BA complete admission of failure.CA chance to explore the unknown.DA unique way of perfecting himself.9What does “cherish” underlined in paragraph 2 mean?ALose. BPrize.CEdit. DPublish.10Why is Wikipedia mentioned in paragraph 3?ATo show advantages of dictionaries.BTo indicate the importance of technology.CTo introduce another powerful learning tool.DTo prove the benefits of using the search engine.11What does the author try to do in the last paragraph?AMake an appeal.BRaise doubts.CGive a warning.DExpress thanks.DMany owners of electric cars have wished for a battery pack that could power their vehicle for more than a thousand miles on a single charge. Researchers have developed a lithium-air battery that could make that dream a reality. The new battery design could also one day power airplanes and trucks. The main new component in this lithium-air battery is a solid electrolyte (电解质) instead of the usual liquid variety. Batteries with solid electrolytes are not subject to safety problems with the liquid electrolytes used in lithium-ion and other battery types, which can overheat and catch fire. More importantly, the solid electrolyte can potentially boost the energy four times, which translates into longer driving range. For over a decade, scientists have been working overtime to develop a lithium () battery that makes use of the oxygen in air. The lithium-air battery has the highest energy of any battery technology being considered for the next generation of batteries beyond lithium-ion. The new solid electrolyte is composed of a material made from relatively inexpensive elements, compared with the past designs. Besides, the chemical reaction in lithium-ion only involves one or two electrons stored per oxygen molecule (分子), while that for lithium-air battery involves four electrons. More electrons stored means higher energy. The new design is the first lithium-air battery that has achieved a four-electron reaction at room temperature. It also operates with oxygen supplied by air from the surrounding environment. The capability to run with air avoids the need for oxygen tanks to operate, a problem with earlier designs. “With further development, we expect our new design for the lithium-air battery to reach a record of 1200 watt-hours per kilogram,” said Curtiss, a researcher. “That is nearly four times better than lithium-ion batteries.”12What contributes most to the lithium-ion battery?ALithium-ion. BOxygen molecules. CSolid electrolytes. DLiquid component.13What’s the problem with lithium-ion batteries?AThey burn easily if overheated. BThey are unsafe in production.CThey damage the environment. DThey require longer charging time.14How does the author organize paragraph 4?ABy giving examples. BBy making comparisons.CBy presenting statistics DBy analyzing cause and effect.15What is the best title of the text?AHow Lithium-air Batteries Work BWhat will Be Used to Power AirplanesCElectric Cars Are Becoming More Popular DNew Batteries Offer Longer Driving 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Applying the correct time management skills and tips can help you get more organized and increase productivity. All the students would show up in their self-made costumes and a winner would be chosen by the principal.“Do you have your costume for the Harvestfest contest?” Alice asked. “I’m going as a chocolate bar. My mom and I have been working on it all week.”“Yeah, I have a costume,” said Jordan Eastman, popping up the two front wheels of his wheelchair as he waited for his dad to pick him up. “But it’s boring.”“Why? What is it?” Alice asked.“MaxMag the superhero, but Danny, Tom and Izzy are all going as MaxMag too.” Jordan shook his head. “That’s too many to stand a chance at winning the contest.” He waved to his dad, who had just pulled up in front of the school.Jordan rolled his wheelchair toward his dad, and Alice walked with him to the minivan.“Maybe you should go as something else.”“The contest is Friday night.” Jordan sighed. “It’s too late to change costumes.”“Jordan, you have to think outside the box. Look around your house and see what you have. There’s hidden potential in everyday items.” She took a sip of her drink, and told Jordan that her chocolate-bar costume was made from old fabric her mom had lying around and recycled plastics. On his way home, Jordan was quiet. He kept thinking about Alice’s words: Think outside the box. There’s hidden potential in everyday items. When he got home, he found his mum handling with some wooden pieces. She was putting a new desk together. On top of the desk was the huge empty cardboard box the pieces had come in.
