Wearing long robes(长袍) and tall hats, a group of foreigners went on stage and performed Peking Opera and ballads(民谣), as well as spoke Chinese.

You can see scenes like this at the 12th “Chinese bridge”—Chinese Proficiency(能力) Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students. The competition took place in Zhengzhou, Henan on November 2.

More than 120 students, representing(代表) 105 countries, gave Chinese speeches and showed off their talent in areas such as kung fu, Tai Chi and calligraphy(书法).

Mackova Victoria, a 15-year-old girl from Slovakia, performed Wuqinxi at the competition. She imitated the movements of a tiger, deer, bear, ape and bird on stage. “It could help me relax myself and stay fit. The 2,000-vear-old exercise is cool, but few people have heard of it. I want more foreign people to appreciate(理解，重视) it, as well as appreciate Chinese culture.”

Raissa, 17, from the Union of the Comoros, sang the Chinese song Wish You Safe and Well. “It is also my wish for the people of China and the Comoros,” said Raissa. After doctors on the Chinese medical team in Africa cured her grandmother three years ago, she came to China. “My dream is to study medicine in China so that I could cure patients like the Chinese doctors who treated my grandmother,” said Raissa.

Germole Iacopo from Italy, who has studied Chinese for four years, won as the champion. For him, the competition gave him a chance to communicate with young people all around the world. “We should learn to appreciate each other’s differences,” Germole said.

Zhang Guimei, the principal of Huaping High School for Girls, has been given the title “Role Model of the Times” for helping girls from poor families.

The school was the first high school in the country to provide free education for girls who would otherwise have been unable to continue their studies after completing their nine years of education.

Zhang moved to Lijiang at the age of 17 to teach in the middle school in Huaping County. Once, she got badly ill but had no money for the treatment（治疗）. With the help of the people there, she was able to get the necessary treatment. “From then on,   I told myself that I must do something for those people who helped me,” Zhang said.

Slowly, a dream of setting up a free high school for girls in Huaping County appeared in Zhang’s heart. From the year of 2002, she began a six-year journey to look for funds （资金）. In 2008, Zhang finally set up Huaping High School for Girls at the foot of the Shizi Mountain in Huaping.

Thanks to her efforts, more than 1,800 girls from poor families have entered universities through her education until now.

Zhang has been helping to improve the area as a whole. Influenced by her, many of her students have chosen to teach in poor areas. Now, with Zhang having got the honorary title, education for girls from poor areas will receive more attention.

What she has done will be long remembered and encourage more to follow her example.

During the Spring Festival, there are many theatres showing a wide variety of movies such as love stories, spy stories, adventure ones, science fiction ones, and Kung-fu ones. Watching movies has increasingly been one of the most popular forms of entertainment As far as I am concerned, I like watching movie "HI Mom" which was directed by Jia Ling.

Watching the movie, I have some insights. Perhaps everyone has heard the old saying "This tree wants to be quiet but the wind doesn't stop. The son wants to raise but there are no elders around. What should we do when we grow up? We can often go back home to take care of our parents, and spend more time with them. Life is only once, but the heart of our lovely family has countless times. When the spring comes all over China, take your family out for a walk to relax, blow away the sadness of the past year, and welcome the brand-new 2021.
