Mr. Utterson was sitting beside the fire one evening after dinner when he received a visit from Poole. He was very surprised to see him. “This is a surprise, Poole!” he exclaimed. Poole looked very worried but did not speak.
“Is the doctor ill?” asked Mr. Utterson.
“Mr. Utterson, there is something wrong,” said Poole.
“Sit down, Poole, and drink some wine. Then tell me what is wrong,” said Mr. Utterson. Poole sat down. “The doctor has shut himself in his workroom, and I don’t like it. I am frightened.”
“What are you afraid of?” asked Mr. Utterson. Poole did not answer the question. “I have been afraid for a week,” he said. He would not look at the lawyer (律师) but kept his eyes on the floor. Mr. Utterson could see that there was something seriously wrong.
“Please try to tell me what it is,” said Mr. Utterson, as kindly as he could.
“I don’t dare (敢) say.” replied Poole, still looking at the floor. “I think somebody has done something very bad. I can’t say any more. Please come and see for yourself.”
Mr. Utterson quickly got his hat and coat. He noticed that Poole looked less worried. It was very cold and windy. There were not many people on the street. When they arrived at the house, Poole knocked at the door. Somebody opened the door, but not very far.
“Is that you, Poole?” asked a servant (仆人).
“Yes,” answered Poole. “It’s all right. Open the door!” The door opened, and the two men went into the house.
“I hope things are not worse,” said Poole.
“I hope so, too,” agreed Mr. Utterson. They came into the hall, and Mr. Utterson was very surprised to find all the servants together around the fire.“ What are you doing here?” he asked them. “Dr. Jekyll will be annoyed. Don’t you have work to do?”
“They are all afraid, sir,” said Poole. One of the maids (女仆) began to cry . “Be quiet!” Poole told her. “Give me a candle,” he said to one of the boys. He took the candle and led Mr. Utterson toward the laboratory and the workroom.
“Please be as quiet as you can, sir,” he said. “I want you to hear what is happening. If he asks you to come in, don’t do it.”
Again, Mr. Utterson was very surprised. Why did Poole say such strange things? They went through the laboratory to the workroom. Poole knocked nervously on the door. “Mr. Utterson is here. He is asking to see you,” he said.
“Tell him that I cannot see anybody,” said a voice.
“Thank you, sir,” said Poole. He led Mr. Utterson away from the door and into the kitchen. He stopped and looked at Mr. Utterson.
“Was that Dr. Jekyll’s voice?” he asked.
“It has changed a lot,” replied Mr. Utterson. Both men were quite frightened.

Baozi is one of the common Chinese food for breakfast. Who would have thought that this simple meal would become a leading character in a film, and even win an Oscar?
On February 24, 2019, the short film Bao won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. In the film, a small baozi comes to life and becomes the “son” of a lonely Chinese woman in an immigrant (移民的) family in Canada.
Domee Shi, Pixar’s first Chinese-Canadian woman director, got the idea from her own experience. When Shi grew up, she wasn’t free and spent little time with her mother.

What is needed to survive? How do living things interact (相互作用)? Is there food, water, comfortable temperature or shelter (庇护所)? All of the answers to these questions are found in the ecosystem (生态系统). An ecosystem is made up of all living things and non-living things and how they interact with each other. Ecology is the study of how all these things interact with each other in order to survive.
An ecosystem may be very small like a yard or a pool. Or it can be large like a prairie (大草原), a desert or a rainforest. No matter (不管) where they are or how small or large they may be, all ecosystems are made up of the same parts. These parts are either living or non-living parts and are equally (同样地) important to the ecosystems.
We call non-living parts of the ecosystem abiotic factors (非生物因素). All living things need non-living things to survive. Some of these abiotic factors include water, minerals (矿物质), sunlight, air, climate (气候) and soil.
All living things need water to survive. Living organisms (有机物) are made up of between 50 and 95 percent water. The processes (过程) that keep living things alive can only happen in the presence (存在) of water. Living things also need minerals. Some living things need sunlight to make food. Animals need oxygen to produce energy for their bodies.
The environment must also have the right temperature for organisms to survive. Without these non-living things, life would not exist (存在).
Just like abiotic factors make it possible for organisms in an ecosystem to survive, biotic factors are equally important for survival in the ecosystem. Biotic factors or living parts of the ecosystem include animals, plants, fungi(菌类), protists (原生生物), bacteria (细菌) and so on.
