Let Ss look at the picture and use the words in the box to talk in pairs.

1) I’m preparing I’m preparing a report called “The world’s population”.
prepare用作动词,意为“准备”,后面常跟名词、代词、不定式作宾语。
prepare … for … 为……准备……
e.g. He is preparing a dinner for his friends.
他正在为他的朋友准备晚饭。
prepare后还可以接间接宾语,即prepare sb. sth.,相当于prepare sth. for sb.,意为“为某人
准备某事(物)”。
2) It said the world’s population was about 7.8 billion in 2020.
billion(十亿), million (百万), thousand (千)都是数字单位。
前面有具体数字修饰时,用单数形式;billion还常用于固定结构billions of, 表示“数以十亿计的”。与此用法类似的词还有hundred, thousand, million等。
e.g. The man is very rich. He has five billion.
那个男人非常富有。他拥有50亿。
There are billions of books in the big library. 大图书馆有数以亿计的图书。
3) I can’t believe it!
表示“简直难以置信”。表示一种惊讶。
4) Hang on a minute!
hang on 通常用来表示让某人等一下, 相当于hold on。
e.g. Hang on! I’ll be back in a minute.
稍等!我马上回来。
5) When populations increase too fast, it can cause problems, such as too much traffic and noise.
too much后面加不可数名词,too many后面加可数名词,都表示“太多的”。
e.g. There are too many books in the bookshop.
There is too much water on the ground.
Step 14 Grammar
掌握数字的用法。
朗读时,将每三位数看做一个单位,依次为billion,million,thousand。每个单位按照百、十、个位向下读,其中百位到十位之间要加入 and。
e.g. 729 :seven hundred and twenty nine.
6,500,431,729: six billion five hundred million four hundred and thirty one thousand seven hundred and twenty nine.
