Miss Marquis was my mentor (导师) when I was 12 and she’s my mentor now as a teacher.
My family moved to the UK from Saudi Arabia in 2017. When I started school there, I didn’t have a great understanding of the English language. Thankfully, I had an amazing teacher called Miss Marquis who helped me get through it. She pushed me all the way and gave me the right guidance.
During my teacher training with ARK, I was given a place at Globe Academy in London as a math teacher. When I saw the head of the English department was Miss Marquis, my jaw (下巴) dropped. It was unbelievable.
I still can’t call her by her first name. The respect I have for her is still there. In one of the lessons I observed she was reading the same book we used in our GCSEs and it took me back to the days when I was being taught by her. You knew you could go to her and share your problems. At the same time, you would never mess about in her lesson. Misbehaving was simply not done.
My aim as a teacher is affected by her. Teaching is about the mark you make on other people’s lives. I’ve worked in a few different schools during my training but I chose ARK because it gives opportunities to children who may not be from wealthy backgrounds. I am trying to have an impact on these people.
It doesn’t matter how many books you read, and nothing can prepare you for your first lesson. I have read all the theories about how to manage behavior but a lot of them just go out of my head when I walk into the classroom because they’re not robots. They’re all unique individuals and you can’t control them. You need to put the work in and build relationships with the students.
    4. When did the author get to know Miss Marquis?
    A. When he began school in a totally new place.
    B. When he worked as a guide at an English school.
    C. When he experienced difficult situations in ARK.
    D. When he arrived in Saudi Arabia with his family.
    5. What was the author’s reaction upon seeing Miss Marquis at ARK?
    A. Embarrassed. B. Puzzled. C. Amused. D. Shocked.
    6. Which of the following best describes Miss Marquis?
    A. Cold and selfish. B. Kind but strict.
    C. Gentle but careless. D. Energetic and friendly.
    7. What should a good teacher do according to the author?
    A. To be devoted to his/her teaching career.
    B. To be equipped with enough knowledge.
    C. To respect and encourage his/her students.
    D. To be well prepared for his/her first lesson.
A 5. D 6. B 7. C
根据文章第一段“My family moved to the UK from Saudi Arabia in 2017. When I started school there, I didn’t have a great understanding of the English language. Thankfully, I had an amazing teacher called Miss Marquis who helped me get through it.(2017年,我们全家从沙特阿拉伯搬到了英国。当我开始在那里上学时,我对英语不是很了解。幸运的是,我有一个了不起的老师,她叫马奎斯小姐,她帮助我度过了难关)”可知,作者是在搬到一个全新的地方——英国后认识的Miss Marquis。故选A项。
根据文章第二段“When I saw the head of the English department was Miss Marquis, my jaw (下巴) dropped. It was unbelievable.(当我看到英语系的系主任是马奎斯小姐时,我大吃一惊。这是难以置信的)”可知,当作者在ARK看到Miss Marquis时,惊掉了下巴,说明作者很震惊。故选D项。
    【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段最后一句“She pushed me all the way and gave me the right guidance.(她一路推着我,给了我正确的指导)”可知,Marquis一路推着作者,并给了他正确的指导,说明她很善良;根据文章第四段最后两句话“At the same time, you would never mess about in her lesson. Misbehaving was simply not done.(与此同时,你绝不会在她的课上捣乱。行为不端根本就没有发生过)”可知,不会在Marquis的课上捣乱,甚至连行为不端都没发生过,说明她很严厉。故选B项。
    【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中的“They’re all unique individuals and you can’t control them. You need to put the work in and build relationships with the students.(他们都是独一无二的个体,你无法控制他们。你需要付出努力,并与学生建立关系)”可知,作者认为每个学生都是独一无二的个体,你无法控制他们,需要付出努力与他们建立联系。由此推知,作者认为一个好的老师就是要做到尊重学生、鼓励学生。故选C项。

The West Potomac Park in Washington, DC, lies just west of the National Mall. It is home to some of Washington’s most iconic (标志性) sites. But the park’s most famous attraction? Cherry blossoms.
Thousands of cherry trees bloom around the waters of the Tidal Basin (潮汐湖), which reflect the trees’ images. The basin was created in the late1800s to prevent the Potomac River from flooding. The original cherry trees were a gift from Japan. On March 26, 1912, more than 3, 000 cherry trees arrived in Washington. Most were planted around the Tidal Basin. But cherry trees were also planted near the Washington Monument and the White House.
Mike Litterst, a spokesperson for the U. S. National Park Service, which maintains the West Potomac Park, helps protect the cherry trees. “This wonderful gift is over 100 years old now and, if you will, the gift keeps on giving. You can enjoy its beauty every year”.
The cherry blossoms also serve as a symbol of the beginning of springtime. Every year, Washington celebrates the arrival of spring with a two - week Cherry Blossom Festival. More than 1.5 million people from around the world visit the nation’s capital during the festival. They all hope to see the cherry trees at their “peak (高峰) bloom”,which lasts several days each year. Experts begin making peak bloom predictions in February. Visitors make their travel plans to Washington based on these predictions. Last year, officials correctly predicted the peak bloom six weeks in advance. But this year, unpredictable weather in March in Washington has made guessing it difficult. “Peak bloom” dates have changed many times.
The cherry blossoms have also become a worldwide symbol of Washington itself. BoWen moved to Washington from China seven years ago. He comes to the Cherry Blossom Festival. “It’s so famous. Everywhere you can see Washington DC Cherry Blossom Festival, on like Twitter and Instagram.”
    8. What do we learn about the West Potomac Park?
    A. It is just next to the Tidal Basin. B. There are some iconic sites around it.
    C. It includes a man - made body of water. D. All the cherry trees from Japan were there.
    9. What does Litterst mean by saying ‘the gift keeps on giving’?
    A. The old cherry trees are still in blossom. B. Visitors can pick the flowers if they like.
    C. Japan is still giving them the cherry trees. D. Visitors want to have the cherry trees as a gift.
    10. What characteristic does Cherry Blossom Festival have?
    A. It usually lasts one week. B. Its time is not the same every year.
    C. It is held when cherry trees start to bloom. D. Its celebration is held all over the country.
    11. What do BoWen’s words about Cherry Blossom Festival imply?
    A. It can be enjoyed just online. B. It is liked by the Chinese very much.
    C. It is one of the most important ones. D. It is widely known all over the world.
C 9. A 10. B 11. D
根据文章第二段中的“Thousands of cherry trees bloom around the waters of the Tidal Basin (潮汐湖), which reflect the trees’ images. The basin was created in the late1800s to prevent the Potomac River from flooding.(数千棵樱花树在潮汐盆地的水域周围盛开,这反映了树木的形象。该盆地建于19世纪末,目的是防止波托马克河泛滥。)”可知,潮汐盆地建于19世纪末,由此可推知这是人为建造的,目的是防止波托马克河泛滥。故选C项。
    【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第三段中的“This wonderful gift is over 100 years old now and, if you will, the gift keeps on giving. You can enjoy its beauty every year.(这份美妙的礼物已经有100多年的历史了,如果你愿意的话,这份礼物还会继续赠送下去。你每年都可以欣赏它的美丽。)”可知,你每年都可以欣赏它的美丽,说明最初的这些樱花哪怕已经超过一百多年了,也还在盛开。由此可推知“the gift keeps on giving”指的是樱花还在继续盛开。故选A项。
根据文章第四段中的“Experts begin making peak bloom predictions in February. Visitors make their travel plans to Washington based on these predictions. Last year, officials correctly predicted the peak bloom six weeks in advance. But this year, unpredictable weather in March in Washington has made guessing it difficult. “Peak bloom” dates have changed many times.(专家们在2月份开始预测花期高峰期。游客们根据这些预测制定前往华盛顿的旅行计划。去年,官员们准确地提前六周预测到了花期高峰期。但今年,华盛顿3月的天气难以预测,使得猜测变得困难。“盛花期”的日期已经改变了很多次。)”可知,樱花的“盛花期”已经改变了很多次,说明每年樱花的“盛花期”都不太一样,也就导致了樱花节的日期也不一样。故选B项。
    【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中的“It’s so famous. Everywhere you can see Washington DC Cherry Blossom Festival, on like Twitter and Instagram.(它很出名。你可以在任何地方看到华盛顿特区的樱花节,比如推特和Instagram。)”可知,能在推特或Instagram等任何地方看到华盛顿的樱花节,说明这个樱花节很出名,世界各地都能看到。故选D项。

Don’t you just hate it when you have to answer an important phone call and you’re surrounded by potential eavesdropper (偷听者) ? You either have to whisper or go outside to keep the conversation private. Now, a new device (设备) aims to solve this problem by blocking your voice.
Hushme is a high - tech mask (口罩) that blocks the sound of the wearer’s voice. It connects to your phone by Bluetooth. It also comes with a pair of earphones. When you get a private call, all you have to do is put the mask on and it will do a good job of blocking your voice. But to ensure nothing gets through, Hushme also features external speakers that play a variety of sounds when you speak.
The Hushme mask comes in a variety of colors. It can be worn around the neck, like a regular pair of earphones. It attaches in front of your mouth thanks to a couple of very powerful magnets (磁铁). The sound options for covering your voice currently include the wind, ocean, rain, bird, monkey, squirrel, R2D2, laughing Minion and Darth Vader breath, but new ones could be added in the future. While Hushme is promoted as a phone call privacy protection device, you could always use it to protect your ears from loud mouth co - workers at the office. Just put this baby over their mouths and you can go on with your work.
Advertised as the “world’s first voice mask for mobile phones”, Hushme was shown at Centre for Environmental Studies (CES) at the beginning of this year. It’s not commercially available yet, but its makers plan to start a crowdfunding campaign, and to start selling it by the end of the year. Engadget reports that it will cost around $ 200.

根据文章最后一段“It’s not commercially available yet, but its makers plan to start a crowdfunding campaign, and to start selling it by the end of the year. (它还没有上市,但它的制造商计划发起众筹活动,并在今年年底开始销售。)”可知,这种高科技口罩目前还没,所以现在还无法购买。故选A项。
根据文章第一段最后一句话“Don’t you just hate it when you have to answer an important phone call and you’re surrounded by potential eavesdropper (偷听者) ? You either have to whisper or go outside to keep the conversation private. Now, a new device (设备) aims to solve this problem by blocking your voice.( 当你不得不接一个重要的电话,身边却有潜在的窃听者时,你难道不讨厌吗?你要么小声说话,要么到外面去保持谈话的隐私。现在,一种新设备旨在通过屏蔽你的声音来解决这个问题。)”和第二段第一句话“Hushme is a high - tech mask (口罩) that blocks the sound of the wearer’s voice.( Hushme是一种高科技口罩,可以屏蔽佩戴者的声音。)”

Which body part conveys most about how we feel? The movements of our hands and arms. While hand and arm gestures are sometimes intentional, most often they occur unconsciously (无意识) and naturally. ____16____
    Saying something important
Open hands and arms, especially extended, and with hands up in front of the body at chest height, indicate that what you’re saying is important. And, especially when people are speaking in public, a pointing finger stresses a personal point. ____17____ However, research shows that people often find speakers who point their fingers a lot rather annoying.
    ____18____
When people want to be open or honest, they will often hold one or both of their hands out to the other person. Footballers who have just committed a foul (犯规) often use this gesture to try to convince the referee that they didn’t do it.
    Nervousness
If a person puts his hand to his mouth, this either suggests that he is hiding something, or that he is nervous. ____19____ Holding a bag or briefcase very tightly in front of the body similarly indicates nervousness.
    Feeling defensive (戒备)
Arms folded tightly over the chest is a classic gesture of defensiveness, which indicates that you are protecting yourself. It is often seen among strangers in queues or in lifts or anywhere where people feel a bit insecure. People also sometimes use this gesture when they are listening to someone. ____20____ But this gesture can simply mean that the person is cold!
    A. To obey or disobey
    B. Openness or honesty
    C. The followings are what they perform.
    D. They mean that they disagree with what is being said.
    E. It is the same with a hand waving above the shoulders.
    F. Playing with your fingers, like tapping the table, also shows anxiety.
    G. When one puts up his both hands, he probably gives in to his enemies.
C 17. E 18. B 19. F 20. D
上文“Which body part conveys most about how we feel? The movements of our hands and arms. While hand and arm gestures are sometimes intentional, most often they occur unconsciously (无意识) and naturally.(身体的哪个部位最能传达我们的感受?我们的手和手臂的运动。虽然手势和手臂动作有时是有意的,但大多数情况下是无意识的、自然的)”提出了对能传达人的感受的部位是手和手臂;下文各个小标题都是不同手势和手臂动作所表达的情感。由此可推知,设空处需要一个过渡句,能承上启下。C项“The followings are what they perform.(以下是它们的表现。)”
上文“Open hands and arms, especially extended, and with hands up in front of the body at chest height, indicate that what you’re saying is important. And, especially when people are speaking in public, a pointing finger stresses a personal point.(张开双手和手臂,尤其是伸开,双手高举在身体前面和胸部一样高,这表明你所说的话很重要。而且,特别是当人们在公共场合讲话时,会指着手指来强调个人观点。)”提到了张开双手和手臂表明自己说的话很重要,在公共场合讲话时会指着手指来强调个人观点;下文“However, research shows that people often find speakers who point their fingers a lot rather annoying.(然而,研究表明,人们通常会觉得经常指着手指的人很讨厌。)” E项“It is the same with a hand waving above the shoulders.(在肩膀上方挥动手也是如此。)”中的the same应是指代上文的stresses a personal point。故选E项。
设空处为小标题,应能概括本段主要内容;下文“When people want to be open or honest, they will often hold one or both of their hands out to the other person.(当人们想要公开或坦诚时,他们通常会向另一个人伸出一只手或两只手。)”
上文“If a person puts his hand to his mouth, this either suggests that he is hiding something, or that he is nervous.(如果一个人用手捂住嘴,这要么表明他在隐瞒什么,要么表明他很紧张。)”提到了用手捂着嘴要么表明想隐瞒什么,要么表明很紧张;下文“Holding a bag or briefcase very tightly in front of the body similarly indicates nervousness.(把包或公文包紧紧地放在身前同样表示紧张。)” F项“Playing with your fingers, like tapping the table, also shows anxiety.(玩手指,比如轻敲桌子,也显示出焦虑。)”
上文“People also sometimes use this gesture when they are listening to someone.(人们有时在听别人说话时也会用这个手势。)”提到了人们有时在听别人说话时也会用这个手势;下文“But this gesture can simply mean that the person is cold!(但这个手势可能只是表示这个人很冷!)” D项“They mean that they disagree with what is being said.(他们的意思是他们不同意别人所说的话。)”中的what is being said与上文的they are listening to someone呼应。故选D项。

It was a dark night in Texas when Luke Armstrong drove into town. He had a lot of things on his mind, and he was driving slowly, thinking of solutions to his problems. He had a sick daughter named Anne, and he was worried she would give in to her illness before he could gather enough money to pay for the surgery
Suddenly, he noticed a flashy sports car parked by the side of the road. It looked like it had a broken tire, but Luke couldn’t be too sure. He passed it without giving it a second thought and continued down the road.
He was so lost in thought that he almost missed the prone (俯卧的) figure of a human lying just by the side of the road. “What is it?” he said to himself and his truck stopped beside the figure.
It was a woman, and she was weak. Luke immediately knew he had to help her as soon as possible. He noticed her expensive outfit as he lifted her. “Perhaps she owns the fancy car I saw a few minutes ago,” Luke said to himself as he moved her to his truck and turned on the heater.
He noticed that she seemed to be having trouble breathing, so he called 911 and reported his exact location as well as the predicament (困境) he found the woman in.
Soon the ambulance came, and the woman was carried away.
After checking on his daughter the next day, Luke decided to see how the woman he rescued was feeling. He had been told she was getting treated in the same hospital. It turned out that she was no longer in danger. She was very grateful for his kindness. After learning about his daughter, she expressed great sympathy (同情).

Who might be kind enough to pay for the surgery?
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A week passed with Luke trying his best to work something out for his child. He had taken on a part-time job in hopes that things would help out, but he knew it would be several months before his savings could cover the surgery. He was trying to find more solutions when he received a call from an unknown number. It was the head physician of a very expensive hospital, and he had great news. “I’m calling to arrange a suitable date for your daughter’s surgery. Someone has generously offered to pay for its cost,” the man said.
Who might be kind enough to pay for the surgery? Luke thought to himself wandering outside of the operating room. Fortunately, the surgery was successful. Luke was very happy but also very confused as he did not know who to thank. He asked his friends and relatives if they had donated the money, but in vain. When he went to pick up his daughter for her journey home, he caught sight of a beautiful woman smiling gracefully at him, and he got it in a flash. It was her, the woman he rescued on the highway.(169w)
