The social media trap of comparing yourself to others can lead to feelings of confusion and jealousy. That was certainly true for Lizzie Velasquez. “I will look at everyone’s photos and feel horrible about myself,” Velasquez says. “So I have made a rule for myself. If I’m on social media, when I start feeling like I’m falling down the rabbit hole of comparison, I have to stop.”

Feeling pressure from the Internet is nothing new for Velasquez. When she was just 17, a video calling her “The World’s Ugliest Woman” became popular on YouTube. It was a difficult period for her. “I suffered from a rare disease which doesn’t allow me to gain weight and also affects my eyes, my bones and my heart,” explains Velasquez.

Growing up, Velasquez said she lived in two different worlds. At home, her family treated her just like everyone else. Her parents raised her to appreciate herself. But that got harder when she started school. “I didn’t become aware of it until I started kindergarten, because I was entering this other world where I had to face the reality,” says Velasquez.

As Velasquez got into high school, she started to gain more understanding about her condition. But then came the YouTube video, which threatened her already-shaky foundation. Though it was difficult, that moment of bullying(霸凌)inspired Velasquez to use her newfound platform for good. She wanted to stop this behavior. Then she gave a talk about her story, reaching millions with her uplifting messages about beauty. And she gave interviews on national talk shows and was featured in the documentary film A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story. “I want to remind people that no matter how different you are and no matter what people say about you, you are meant to be in this world and being different is unique,” says Velasquez.

24Where did Velasquez’s teenage pressure mainly come from?

AHer tense relationships with her parents. BOthers’ criticism of her appearance.

COthers’ concern about her disease. DHer popularity on social media.

25How can we describe Lizzie Velasquez?

ABrave and inspiring. BTalented and confident.

CSociable and popular. DCaring and warm-hearted.

26What did Velasquez do to fight online bullying?

AAvoid using social media for a while.

BCall on people to talk directly with the bullies.

CEncourage the young to improve their taste in beauty.

DSpeak out against the behavior by sharing her experiences.

27What does the author mainly tell us in the text?

AThe negative effects of online bullying.

BA girl’s message about beauty and happiness.

CThe public’s attitude to online bullying among teenagers.

DA story of turning pain into power against online bullying.

    C

After a day’s labor, Andreas Fichtner and his colleagues have spliced (绞接) together three segments of fibers, creating a 12.5-kilometer-long fiber-optic (光学的) cable. It will stay buried in the snow to spy on the activity of Grfmsvotn, a dangerous, glacier-covered volcano.

Fichtner, a geophysicist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, in Zurich, is one of the researchers using fiber optics to take the pulse of our planet. Much of their work is done in remote places, from the tops of volcanoes to the bottoms of seas, where traditional monitoring is too costly or difficult.

The technique used by Fichtner’s team is called distributed acoustic sensing, or DAS. “It’s almost like radar in the fiber,” says the physicist Giuseppe Marra of the United Kingdom’s National Physical Laboratory, in Teddington. While radar uses reflected radio waves to locate objects, DAS uses reflected light to detect events as varied as earthquake activity and moving traffic, and to determine where they occurred. Inside the cables are optical fibers. DAS involves shooting quick pulses of laser light down the fiber and detecting bits of light that scatter back to the laser source due to disturbances in the environment. When the earth’s surface vibrates and shifts, it pulls the cables, so a detector can identify these small changes.

The New York Times points out that although wireless and satellite technology are booming, good old-fashioned cables are still the most efficient way to send information across oceans. Repurposing cables could give scientists the ability to monitor high-risk zones that were previously hard to reach. They could help detect earthquakes and tsunamis a few seconds earlier than traditional warning systems.

In addition, fiber-optic cables could also help solve some of the biggest challenges for humans. In the recent years, scientists have started to use them to measure ocean waves and access fault (断层) information. It is believed that fiber-optic cables will serve to benefit us greatly in the future.

28What is the purpose of the work of Fichtner’s team?

ATo track volcanic activities. BTo strike oil under the sea.

CTo lengthen fiber-optic cables. DTo keep fibers covered in the snow.

29What can we learn about the technique of DAS?

AIt determines when and where disasters occurs.

BIt uses radio waves to locate moving objects.

CIt improves the efficiency of transmitting light.

DIt detects tiny variation of the earth’s surface.

30What does the underlined expression “Repurposing cables” probably mean?

ARecycling cables in new fields. BAdapting cables for a new function.

CInstalling cables beneath volcanoes. DPromoting cables into massive production.

31What is the best title for the text?

ADAS Is Feeling the Heartbeat of Volcanoes

BSatellite Technology Is Booming in Our Times

CUnderground Cables Are Taking the Planet’s Pulse

DFiber-optic Cables Are Giving Us Insights into Earthquakes

Along Route 1, in Thomas-tomatines a store filled with handicrafts—birdhouses and dollhouses, salad bowls and sailing ships — all made in Maine state prisons. Ted and Barbara Waylayer have been shopping here for decades. “We found the quality to be excellent,” said Ted.

Prisoners have been making things in Maine since the 1800s. Charlie Jones came here when he was 20, sentenced to 75 years in a state where there is no parole(假释). In the workshops, he discovered he had a talent for carving. One of Jones’ earlier projects was a golden eagle, which he learned to carve from a book.

“It’s amazing to see the amount of talent that the residents have here,”said Randall Liberty, commissioner(局长)of Maine’s Department of Corrections.“We have more than 100 residents working here daily. They do about US $1.6 million worth of work. “One of Maine’s programs allows residents to earn a college degree. The money for it was donated by Doris Buffet, who lived in Dockland, Maine. “She gave us an initial US $2 million donation,” said Liberty.  “And that’s the best money I’ve ever seen invested in anyone.”

Charlie Jones is one of the graduates. “The college program is incredible,” Jones laughed. “When we used to walk to dinner, we could hear people talking about their former crimes. But now when going to dinner, you’ll hear somebody talking about their philosophy class or their history class.”

Liberty said, “The individuals that graduate have about a 5% recidivism(再犯) rate, as opposed to a 60-65% nationally. That means 95% of the people who go through this program don’t go back.”

When Doris Buffet died in 2020, Charlie Jones made a table, with legs made of books, to honor her. It’s also carved with the names of courses open to prison residents, and the professors who teach them. On the table was a book telling Daris Buffet’s story, and a thank you note.

32What does paragraph 2 tell us about Charlie Jones?

AHe has a gift for carving. BHe has earned a master degree.

CHe is only expert in carving eagles. DHe has been in prison for about 20 years.

33Why did Charlie Jones say those words in paragraph 4?

ATo show how the prisoners tried to reform.

BTo reveal what led those like Charlie Jones to prison.

CTo list some courses included in the college program.

DTo highlight the positive effect of the college program.

34What can we learn from paragraph 5?

APrisoners in Maine create little value.

BFew prisoners in Maine are hardworking.

CThe handicrafts made in Maine state prisons are of high quality.

DPrisoners graduating from college have a lower recidivism rate.

35What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

AHow Doris Buffet died in 2020.

BWhat the table made by Charlie Jones is like.

CCharlie Jones’ sorrow over the death of Doris Buffet.

DWhy there was a book telling Doris Buffet’s story on the table.

How to Build a Better Breakfast

We've all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that may actually be true. A study found that breakfast eaters were more likely to lose weight than those who didn't eat a morning meal. ___36___ But it's not just when you eat; it's what you eat. These tips will help you really rise and shine:

    1. Eat even if you're not hungry.

Although you might not feel like eating first thing in the morning, it's a good idea to get something into your system. Eating within 90 minutes of waking up will jump-start your metabolism(新陈代谢)and keep you from getting hungry later. ___37___

    2. Be boring.

Changing what you eat is a good idea in theory, but if you are watching your weight, you might want to stick with the same old menu. People who allowed their breakfast calories to change have larger waists(腰围)and a higher incidence of metabolic syndrome(代谢综合征)than folks who keep their morning calorie intake constant, no matter how much they eat the rest of the day. ___38___

    3. Add peanuts or peanut butter.

By eating peanuts or peanut butter, the carbohydrates(碳水化合物)are taken in more slowly and blood sugar does not rise as high. ___39___ So they are less likely to snack later.

    4. ___40___

There's an old saying that advises ''Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. " It's worth following. Those who eat a balanced 700-calorie breakfast over a 12-week period lower their blood sugar and blood pressure twice more than people who eat a 200-calorie meal. They also lose an average of 19.2 pounds and have lower levels of ghrelin, the "hunger hormone(激素).

    AGo big.

    BPile on the produce.

COther studies link skipping breakfast with a higher risk of developing high blood pressure, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes(糖尿病).

DSo it's worth making the effort to hold it steady.

EIt could set you up for overeating throughout the day.

FJust a banana will do the trick.

GPlus women feel fuller for up to 12 hours after eating the peanut butter or peanuts.

It was a fantastic and cheery early summer day. The sun was shining brilliantly, with clouds dancing in the blue sky. The birds were singing merrily and the colourful flowers were in full bloom. There was a warm gentle breeze. Bright green leaves swung in the wind, occasionally falling to the ground, cast off from the trees they trusted.

It was a lovely morning to be outdoors, to enjoy oneself in the splendid beauty of nature. There’s nothing quite as curative as being out in nature. Little Bear hated being locked at home. He wanted to go out to relieve his boredom. While his mother was busy with the daily domestic tasks, Little Bear slipped out through the backdoor. He was so eager for independence that he ignored his parents’ words and raced off into the woods near his home on his own.

As he jogged along the winding path from his home, Little Bear felt like an adventurer. Soon, the stone path ended and he found himself in the forest. He had never been so far from home all by himself. As Little Bear explored the plants of different colors in the abundant green forest, the fear of being alone in the great outdoors began to wear off. He immediately began to regret his careless decision to escape from his parents.

By afternoon, the sun was burning hot. Little Bear was weak from hunger and thirst. He felt tired and hungry. He longed for his mother’s cooking. He longed for his nice cosy bed. He longed to go home. Little Bear scanned the surroundings. Everything looked unfamiliar to him. He was lost! There was not a soul in sight from whom he could ask for directions. Little Bear sat on a rock, alone and depressed. Looking down, all he could see were his little paw prints imprinted in the mud.
