On February 6th, 2022 Inglemoor High School freshman Ishitha Arekapudi took a deep breath as the wheels of a white glider(滑翔机) hit the ground. She did it—her first solo(独自的) flight in a glider!
“I was nervous, but when I started out, I knew it was going to be okay because I had the right training and I knew what to do,” she said. Since May 2021, the young flyer has been training with an instructor every weekend at Bergseth Field Airport in Enumclaw, America to prepare for her flight.
She intended to fly solo before reaching her 15th birthday, she said. However, winter weather conditions in December prevented her from reaching that goal. It didn’t stop her. Since she couldn’t fly at Bergseth Field with the winter weather, Arekapudi joined the Evergreen Soaring Association at the Arlington Municipal Airport to continue training with support from flight instructor Eric Haupt.
Arekapudi said she spent every weekend at the airport in the early morning despite the cold and rain.
To share her story and inspire other students to develop their interests, Arekapudi formed the Sky Riders Club as an eighth-grader in 2021. In middle school, the group started with five members. By the end of last year, over 40 students joined. As the current president of the club, Arekapudi said, she gets to invite guest speakers and company representatives(代表) to speak about aviation(航空).
Flying is more than just a hobby for Arekapudi. Next, she is preparing for the Federal Aviation Administration Airman Knowledge Test. She plans to study astrobiology or astrophysics in college, and finally work for NASA or Blue Origin. The goal is to become a space woman, she added.
4、How did Arekapudi feel after she took off on her first solo flight?
    A. Curious. B. Disappointed. C. Confident. D. Frightened.
5、Which words can best describe Ishitha Arekapudi?
    A. Brave and creative. B. Easygoing and active.
    C. Hard-working and determined. D. Cautious and independent.
6、What can we learn about Arekapudi’s Sky Riders Club?
    A. It became a good example for other clubs.
    B. It failed to achieve its purpose.
    C. It received bad comments from experienced flyers.
    D. It developed quite well afterwards.
7、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.High school student completed her first solo flight.
B.What does it take to become a flyer?
C.What should you do to achieve your goal?
    D.Having a hobby helped a girl enter a college.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” When I was a kid, I dreaded the question. I never had a good answer. Adults always seemed terribly disappointed that I wasn’t dreaming of becoming a scientist or an astronaut.
In college, I finally realized I wanted to do many things. So I found a solution: I became an organizational psychologist. My job is to fix other people’s jobs. I get to experience them indirectly—I’ve got to explore how filmmakers blaze new trails and how astronauts build trust. And I’ve got to believe that asking youngsters what they want to be does them a disservice.
One of my complaints about the question is that it forces kids to define (定义) themselves in terms of work. When you’re asked what you want to be when you grow up, it’s not socially acceptable to say, “A father,” or, “A mother.” This might be one of the reasons many parents say their most important value for their children is to care about others, yet their kids believe that top value is success. When we define ourselves by our jobs, our worth depends on what we achieve.
The upside of low expectations is that they erase the gap between what we want and what we get. A lot of evidence shows that instead of painting a rosy picture of a job, you’re better off going in with a realistic preview of what it’s really like. Sure, you might be less excited to take it, but on average you end up more productive.
I’m all for encouraging youngsters to aim high and dream big. But asking kids what they want to be leads them to claim a career identity they might never want to earn. So instead, invite them to think about what kind of person they want to be—and about all the different things they might want to do.
8、What does the underlined word “dreaded” most probably mean in Paragraph 1?
    A. Became interested in. B. Was confused about.
    C. Cared little about. D. Felt anxious about.
9、What is the disadvantage of forcing kids to define themselves by jobs?
    A. Leading to a limited value about self-worth.
    B. Getting them to make regular complaints.
    C. Having side effects on their future work.
    D. Preventing them from being kind and helpful.
10、How can we work more productively in the author’s opinion?
A.Imagine our job to be promising. B.Preview our job realistically as a whole.
C.Keep a normal attitude towards our job. D.Take up a job in our desired career.
11、What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To argue against a false belief. B.To suggest a way to educate kids.
C.To present a few new points of view. D.To encourage kids to dream big.
Osa is an athletic yet stubborn 62-pound German shepherd. The six-year-old dog has mastered the art of sniffing(嗅,闻) out cancer and is key to a research project that has the potential to change oncology(肿瘤学).
Osa is part of an ambitious effort launched five years ago at the University of Pennsylvania that aims to develop one of the most powerful scent-detection(气味探测) machines in the world: the canine nose. She is able to distinguish between blood samples (样本) taken from cancer patients and healthy people simply by sniffing them.
In fact, Osa is one of five cancer-detection dogs trained by Annemarie DeAngelo and her workmates at the university’s Penn Vet Working Dog Centre. The most important goal is to develop an “electronic sniffer” that can have similar cancer-sniffing superpowers of Osa and her pals. Osa arrived at the Penn Vet Working Dog Centre from a breeder at two months of age. Ever since, she has taken training. The process is demanding, challenging and repeated until the dog has mastered the most basic task of all. Finally, she has succeeded in sniffing out cancer. To change Osa’s outstanding abilities into an electronic nose, researchers use a similar way to train the machine.
An electronic nose prototype(原型,模型) has been built, and it’s successful in sniffing out cancer 90 to 95 percent of the time. That team has also correctly detected different types of cancer, and is building a cancer-detecting device for the National Institutes of Health. One aim is to be able to distinguish between early-stage and late-stage cancer. “It would be amazing to identify people at an early stage and really have an effect on saving lives,” says a researcher. “The dogs have been able to detect that. With that ability, a blood test could be sent to a central lab, or ideally performed in a doctor’s office, making some hidden cancers a thing of the past. We expect that the cancer-sniffer device will be completed soon.
12、What can we learn about Osa from the first two paragraphs?
    A. She uses nose to detect the presence of cancer.
    B. She can change the course of the oncology.
    C. She was too stubborn to join the research.
    D. She used to be an athletic German shepherd.
13、Which of the following best describes the training according to Paragraph 3?
    A. Purposeful. B. Boring. C. Strict. D. Endless.
14、What can we infer from the researcher’s words?
    A. Distinguishing cancers is important in early experiments.
    B. Blood tests will be more difficult in the future.
    C. There will be more dogs tested for detecting cancer.
    D. The hidden cancers may be detected by an electronic nose soon.
15、What is the text mainly about?
    A. The result of a study on dogs’ life. B. The role of dogs in detecting cancers.
    C. The importance of having a blood test. D. The ways to distinguish cancers.

Peter, 55, loved his job as a bus driver. He had been one almost all his life, loving the company of the little children who rode his bus daily. It made him feel younger and more energetic. His record was clean without one accident during his career(职业生涯), which made him a trustworthy driver.
However, Peter’s boss Mr. Clark thought Peter was old and wanted younger drivers. He called Peter to his office and told it was time for him to make retirement plans. Although Peter wanted to keep the job he had to give in to Mr. Clark’s request. And Peter decided to retire a week later. He would miss being a bus driver for the school kids and he would miss their lovely smiles and jokes.
After leaving Mr. Clark’s office, Peter went about his job and returned home to his lonely life. His wife had died years before and his son lived abroad. His job was the only thing that kept him busy.
But that would be gone too. And Peter wondered what he would do without it. He didn’t have any hobbies in particular. His job and the joy of seeing his young riders every day were the only things that kept him clear-headed. Unfortunately for Peter time flew by and his retirement day came soon.
The day before his last day, Peter was dropping off the kids at his first stop when he looked out the window and saw a lady on the road who had passed out(昏迷). He asked the kids not to leave the bus and got down to help the woman. He sprinkled(洒) some water from his water bottle on the woman’s face; before long she was awake.
Peter was about to return to the bus when he heard screams behind him. He turned around and saw the front part of the bus in fire—caused by an engine problem. The children were looking out the window screaming “Help!” Shocked, Peter called 911 and rushed to help the children. The fire had already spread to the bus entrance by then, trapping the children at the back of the vehicle.

    39、答案:
Knowing he didn’t have time to lose, Peter covered himself with his jacket and rushed into the burning bus. “It’s dangerous!” someone cried, but Peter paid no attention. Unbothered by his hand that burned in the process, he began comforting the crying kids as he rescued them. Thankfully, the firefighters arrived on the scene soon and helped Peter, saving all 28 students from the burning bus. In tears, the kids surrounded Peter and hugged him, and Peter’s eyes welled up, too.
The next day, Peter woke up to find Mr. Clark, parents, kids carrying flowers outside his house. Confused, Peter hurried downstairs and approached them. The crowd started handing him the flowers and saying he was a hero. And Mr. Clark hugged him and said, “Even younger drivers would have been too frightened to get into a burning bus, but you weren’t.” Then, he shook Peter’s hands and added that Peter could keep his job. Peter almost jumped for joy in tears. Just then, the kids he had saved surrounded him and hugged him again. After that day, Peter continued driving kids, happy and proud.
