A long time before I was born, my grandma and grandpa moved into the house on Beechwood Avenue. They had a young family of 4 little girls. During that time, it was hard to find a job. So, on weekend grandpa and grandma cleaned the garden to grow some of their own food. They planted tomatoes, beans, cabbages, potatoes and strawberries to feed their growing family. All summer long, the family ate food from the garden.

The family grew up, and before too many years had passed, the grandchildren came to visit. Grandma and grandpa still planted their garden every spring. Everyone still enjoyed the good food from the garden and always took some home.

Then grandpa died in one summer when he was eighty-nine years old. It was a lonely winter for grandma. She sat near the window, looking out at the yard and wondering if she could plant the garden in the spring. It would be hard to care for it by herself. When spring came, she planted only a little.

One nice day in the early summer, grandma heard a noise in the front yard and looked out the window. There were thousands of bees in the air. Grandma wondered what she could do. She decided to wait and think it over. Before long, she decided the bees won’t bother anyone, so she went about her business and didn’t give them any other thought.

That summer, grandma’s little garden grew and grew. The neighbors all puzzled why they grew so well. One day, grandma’s brother Frank visited her. Frank said, “In my hometown, the farmers often hired beekeepers to set up bee houses near their fields. The bees helped them to grow.” That was when Grandma realized that her bees had helped with her garden all summer.

From that Time on, grandma always believed that since grandpa couldn’t be there to help her that summer, he had sent the bees to take his place and make grandma’s little garden grow and grow.

Ann was born on October 3, 1997 in Victoria Canada. Her mother is Philippine and her father is a Polish. Although she is young, she has become an inventor, a speaker, and a writer.

Ann is creative. As early as 11, Ann entered the world of science fairs. She took part in 10 science fairs and all of her projects were about green energy.

Ann is friendly and helpful. When she was 14 years old, she found out that her friend Maria in the Philippines failed at school because she didn’t have any light to study with at night. Her family couldn’t afford electricity. In order to help Maria, Ann came up with an idea. After a year of research, Ann invented the “Hollow Flashlight”, a flashlight that uses the heat of human hands.

Ann is strong and brave. After finishing high school in 2015, Ann went to university. But in January 2017, she was seriously ill. The whole right side of her body couldn’t walk normally, but she wasn’t frightened by it. She spent over two weeks in the hospital and continued to recover (恢复) for months at home. Finally, she was in full health.

If music makes you smarter and exercise helps you to think, surely exercising to music can turn you into an intelligent person.

A team of scientists from Ohio State University did experiments on 33 volunteers who were getting better from heart disease following operation. They found that people who exercised while listening to Italian musician Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” did much better on language ability tests than without music. It is also used in medical fields for patients who have bad head hurts because of its moderate tempo (舒缓的节奏).

“Exercise seems to cause positive changes in the nervous system and these changes may improve the learning ability of people with heart disease,” said the psychologist Charles Emery, who led the study. “And listening to music is thought to enhance understanding. We just wanted to put the two results together,” he added.

The volunteers said they felt better emotionally and physically after working out with or without the music. But their improvement on the test doubled after listening to music during exercise. Scientists have proved that music can be good for health, education and well-being. It helps reduce stress and sadness, encourages relaxation or sleep, wakes up the body and improves memory and thoughts.

Scientists have been studying the results of music on understanding since the early 1950s. A study showed that students who listened to Mozart 's violin pieces and exercised went on to get higher marks in an intelligence test. With important exams drawing near, your parents will not probably allow you to listen to music. But perhaps now you have good reasons to argue with them.

66What does the underlined word “enhance” probably mean? ________.

    AProduce. BProvide. CImprove. DIncrease.

67Which of the following statements is TRUE?

AExercise is used for people with head hurts.

BMusic helps volunteers get better from heart disease.

CScientists often use Mozart's music, for it is not too exciting.

D“The Four Seasons” can be used to help children with speech disorders.

68It can be learned from the last paragraph that _______.

Ayou are supposed to follow your parents' words

Byou have some good reasons about music and exercising

Cgood marks depend on listening to music and exercising

Dexercise to music might help you get higher grades in tests

69The text mainly tells us that _______.

Amusic and exercise lead to relaxation or sleep

B33 volunteers work on music in medical fields

Cexercising to music makes people healthy and bright

Dscientists give suggestions on choosing music to exercise

    E

How often do you eat takeout (外卖食品)? Maybe most of you would answer, “Every day!” Nowadays, people are too busy to prepare food themselves. Some people don’t know how to cook and others also want to have something new. Besides, eating takeout is easy because all you need to have is a smartphone. But here is an interesting question: Did people eat takeout in ancient times?

In fact, there was takeout as far back as Song Dynasty. Emperor Xiaozong (孝宗皇帝) liked to order takeout late at night. His servants then went around the city to pick up the dishes and brought them back to the palace.

Common people also ordered takeout. Restaurant waiters would go out into the street and shout out which dishes could be ordered that day. People could then place an order. Later, waiters would bring food to their home. People at that time even had the special meal box for takeout dishes. It was a long wooden box with several layers (). People put hot water between the layers to keep dishes warm.

Now, having takeout is popular and convenient but it also leads to health and environment problems. What do you think of it?

70Who was able to order takeout in Song Dynasty?

AOnly the emperor. BOnly common people.

CBoth the emperor and common people. DNeither the emperor nor common people.

71What did people put into the meal box to keep food warm?

AFire. BHot water. CHot dishes. DSeveral layers.

72What does the writer want to tell us in the last paragraph?

AHaving takeout may cause some problems.

    BHaving takeout is good.

CWe should have takeout like ancient people.

DTakeout is very bad and nobody should have it anymore.

When I was in the 4th grade, I got to take a trip to the moon. I remember the day like it was yesterday. It was one of the strangest experiences I had ever had.

It all started when Miss Fritz, our science teacher, was showing a video about the solar system(太阳系)and different planets. Suddenly I noticed a shiny disc(亮盘)lying on the floor. I kept trying to pay attention to the video, but found myself reaching over to pickup the disc.

As soon as I touched it, something strange happened. I wasn’t in the classroom anymore. I was flying in the air! I was a little nervous, but also very excited. Soon I was standing on the moon. It was amazing! It looked very different from the earth. No trees, water, or houses. There wasn’t even any wind. Later I saw a flag. On the flag were the words, “To return to the earth, close your eyes.”

I knew it might get dark soon and I didn’t want to be on the moon by myself. So I decided to close my eyes. When I opened my eyes, I was still in my science classroom.  Miss Fritz was turning on the lights because the video was over. I sat there wondering what had just happened. I looked around to look for the disc, but it was gone! Did I really take a trip to the moon or was it just a dream?
