Vinisha Umashankar was returning to her home in southern India from school a few years ago when she saw a man throwing away burnt charcoal (木炭) on the side of the street. He worked by ironing people’s clothes for a living-and his main appliance was an old-fashioned iron box, which he filled with hot charcoal that produced a cloud of smoke. Umashankar started thinking about how this was happening across the country, where the ironing vendor (小商贩) is a fixture.
So Umashankar came up with an idea. Instead of using charcoal to heat up the irons, the vendors could use something abundantly available in India: the power of the sun. Over the six months in 2019, when she was just 12 years old, she designed a cart (推车) that had solar panels to power a steam iron. She turned to college-level physics textbooks to get an understanding of how solar panels work. Then, she consulted some engineers about her concept and asked them to assist her in building a model.
And so the Iron-Max was born. It’s a blue-painted cart shaped like an iron box with solar panels fitted on its roof. It’s attached to a bicycle to allow vendors to move through the neighborhood to collect clothes to iron. Five hours of bright sunshine is enough to fully charge and operate the iron for six hours. The energy can be store Dina battery to provide power on cloudy days. The cart also has a coin-operated cellphone and a cellphone charging point where people can pay to recharge their phones to help vendors make extra money.
With her creative invention, Umashankar was invited to give a powerful 5-minute speech at COP26, the UN’s climate change summit in Glasgow, Scotland, in which she urged world leaders to stop talking and start acting.
Last September, Umashankar was named one of 15 finalists for the Earth shot Prize launched by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. She did not win the prize in her category, “Clean Our Air”, but was praised by judges for being the youngest finalist for the award.
24.What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To show an Indian girl’s daily routines.
B.To tell the inspiration for the Iron-Max.
C.To point out an environmental problem.
D.To explain how ironing vendors survive.
25.What did Vinisha Umashankar do to invent the Iron-Max?
A.She turned to some experts for help.
B.She attended lectures in universities.
C.She used charcoal to heat up the irons.
D.She consulted vendors about her concept.
26.What does the text say about the solar-powered ironing cart?
A.It is not attached to a bicycle.
B.It fails to work on cloudy days.
C.It can offer additional services.
D.It does ironing fully automatically.
27.What can we infer about Vinisha Umashankar’s invention?
A.It led to the opening of COP26.
B.It was doubted by most judges.
C.It finally won the Earth shot Prize.
D.It received wide recognition.

In August, Jason M. Allen’s piece “Theatre D’opéra Spatial”-which he created with Al image generator Midjourney -won first place in the emerging artist division’s “digital arts photography” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. The definition for the category states that digital art refers to works that use “digital technology as part of the creative process”.
Allen’s award-winning image has led to debates about what, exactly, it means to be an artist and whether AI can truly make art. “It felt bad for the exact same reason we don’t let robots participate in the Olympics, “ one Twitter user wrote. ”This is the literal definition of ‘pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece’, “ another tweeted.
Yet while Allen didn’t use a paintbrush, there was plenty of work involved, he said. First, he played around with phrasing that led Midjourney to generate images of women in elegant dresses and space helmets, in an attempt to mix Victorian-style costuming with space themes. Over time, with many slight changes to his written prompt (提示符), he created 900 different versions of what led to his final image. Then he improved its resolution through Gigapixel AI and finally had the images printed.
Allen is glad the debate over whether AI can be used to make art is attracting so much attention. “Rather than hating on the technology, we need to recognize that it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward, ” Allen said.
Cal Duran, one of the judges for the competition, said that while Allen’s piece included a mention of AI, he didn’t realize that when judging it. Still, he sticks by his decision to award it first place. “I think the AI technology may give more opportunities to people who may not find themselves artists in the conventional way, ” he said.
28.Why has Jason’s work led to debates?
A.It was a copy of a photograph.
B.He challenged the older artists.
C.It was created with the help of AI.
D.He broke the rule of the competition.
29.What can best describe Allen’s creating process?
A.Cooperative.
B.Energy-consuming.
C.Straightforward.
D.Imagination-lacking.
30.What can we learn about AI from the last paragraph?
A.It is a double-edged sword.
B.It attracts conventional artists.
C.It strikes art judges as no surprise.
D.It may open a new world to artists.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.A trend to be AI artists.
B.An AI-generated art contest.
C.Responses to a winning AI artwork.
D.Curiosity about an image generator.

Once the red wolf’s historic range stretched from Long Island to Missouri and down to the Texas-Mexico border. But by 1972 their population was reduced to a small area along the Gulf coast due to habitat loss and hunting.
To conserve the species, 14 individuals were caught as part of a reproducing program. In 1980 their wild relatives were declared extinct — the caught wolves were all that was left and thus lots of genetic variation was lost. You can’t help it when you have so few founders.
Kristin Brzeski is an assistant professor at Michigan Technological University, whose research focuses on the conservation of genetics of wild animal populations. He thought this work had been an underdog scientifically and for conservation, for all wolves decreased in amount dramatically, especially the red wolves. Now, Brzeski and her co-workers have found a surprising new pool of red wolf genes that might help bring more diversity to the tiny population: they found the disappearing genes of red wolves in wild coyote populations. But why did this happen?
Remember: when a population is dying out, it might find the closest related species as their own best mate, so a red wolf and a coyote can have offspring. As a result, people can rediscover their genes in their coyote hybrid offspring. As red wolves are released back into the wild, reproducing with these coyotes could help the critically endangered species regain some of its genetic diversity.
This would be kind of the opposite direction: take the existing small population that still has red wolf genes that are so critical, and put them into a wild landscape with new genetic variation that they haven’t seen for 50 years or more. And all of a sudden, hopefully, this is like a super mix of genetic health and sort of a rebound that these animals can be wild and be themselves again.
The next step will include how to release red wolves in a way that takes advantage of the genes red wolves hiding in coyote populations. There should be a philosophy in our mind that we created this problem, so we should be responsible for fixing it.
32.Why was much genetic variation of the red wolves lost?
A.Their habitat loss. B.Their limited number.
C.Their relatives’ extinction. D.Their poor adaptability.
33.What does the underlined word “underdog” in Para.3 mean?
A.Failure. B.Success. C.Breakthrough. D.Dilemma.
34.What is Brzeski’s attitude to releasing red wolves into the wild?
A.Disappointed. B.Favorable. C.Pessimistic. D.Cautious.
35.What is the best title of the passage?
A.A promising way to save red wolves B.Red wolves — an endangered species
C.Wild coyotes — red wolves’ perfect match D.An unknown future to protect red wolves

China’s Chang’e 5 mission successfully delivered samples (样本) of moon rock and dust to Earth on December 17, 2020. It marks the first time in 4 years that moon rocks have brought back to our planet, after the Soviet Union’s Luna-24 mission in 1976.
While Apollo-era moon rocks were estimated to be about 3 to 4 billion years old, the material collected by Chang’e 5 is from a site in the northwest region of the moon’s near side. This area was formed late, and the rocks here are thought to be only about 1.2 billion years old. That means scientist could learn more about the evolution of the moon and test out new techniques for estimating the age of geological samples from another planets and moons (卫星).
The Chang’e lunar program, what includes landing two lunar rovers (月球车) on the moon’s surface, has been remarkably successful. Although Chang’e 5 was a short mission, but it’s one of the most complex projects undertaking by the Chinese space program so far. The country is far from done with the moon — Chang’e 6, the second lunar sample return, is scheduled to be launched in 2023 or 2024.
