根据第五段最后两句“The system was able to offer mobile coverage to an area 200 times larger than a traditional ground-based cell tower. However, a carrier would need several balloons at once, each would cost tens of thousands of dollars and last only about five months.(该系统能够提供的移动覆盖范围比传统的地面发射塔大200倍。然而,一个载物架一次需要几个气球,每个气球花费数万美元,而且只能使用大约5个月。)”可知,本段是通过解释其优缺点来介绍Loon这项技术的。故选C项。
【34题详解】

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
【答案】36. C 37. B 38. D 39. F 40. G
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章通过描述生活中人们打嗝的现象的发生原因,提出了解决此问题的一些方法。
【36题详解】
根据前文“Hiccups are the loud noises our throats make without us wanting them to.”(打嗝是我们不经意间发出的声音。)
根据前文“When we breathe in, our diaphragm pulls down to let air into our lungs.”(当我们吸气时,隔膜向下拉,让空气进入肺部。) 后文“But if something irritates our diaphragm, it can cause it to spasm(痉挛). The spasm makes us inhale air suddenly. When this air hits our voice box, our vocal cords immediately shut, creating a “hic” sound.”(但如果有什么东西刺激了我们的横膈膜,就会导致它痉挛。
根据下文“Swallowing air while sucking on candy—or drinking fizzy drinks like Coca-Cola, or too much alcohol—can also cause us to hiccup. Emotions—like being nervous, excited, or even stressed—cause hiccups too.”(吸糖果的时候吞咽空气,或者喝可口可乐之类的碳酸饮料,或者喝太多的酒精,都会导致打嗝。
根据前文“But how can we get rid of them?”(但我们怎么才能摆脱他们呢?) 下文“The official recommendations from the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) say that holding your breath for a short time is a good idea.”(英国国民健康服务(NHS)的官方建议说,屏住呼吸一小段时间是个好主意。)
根据前文“Breathing into a paper bag is another option the NHS gives, as well as pulling your knees up to your chest and leaning forward, or very slowly drinking ice-cold water.”(对着纸袋呼吸是NHS提供的另一个选择,还有把膝盖拉到胸前,身体前倾,或者慢慢地喝冰水。)

After Katy had gone, my mother asked me why I had pushed my friend. I repeated Katy’s remark. Just then, I didn’t know if I was angry at Katy because her comment was so obviously meant to insult me, or if I was sad that what she said was true. My mother just stared at the doll in her hands. That night, Katy and her mother appeared at our door. Katy’s mother apologized for the incident and offered to buy me a new doll. My mother just said no. She did not say “thank you.”
After they had gone, my mother gave me the doll back. She had glued the head back together. She looked at me a long time and then said, “Your doll is better now.” She explained that the original glue wasn’t very good. So she had fixed it, making its head stronger, less fragile. Now it wouldn’t fall apart when it dropped. “Do you understand?” she asked. I did. I held the bride doll in my arms, realizing that the special type of “glue” my mother showed was in me, as well. I didn’t ever need to be afraid. She taught me that even though I was a child, I had the right to be respected.
Text 1
W: Hello, Jack! This is Sarah. Do you happen to know John’s phone number?
M: Yes, but I don’t have it at hand. I can look it up for you in my address book when I get home.
Text 2
W: Hi, Tim. I said I’d meet you at eleven, but something’s come up. My little brother’s broken a tooth and I should take him to see the dentist at ten thirty. So, could we meet a bit later?
M: Sure. Say at twelve?
W: OK.
Text 3
M: Luckily, the famous painting Simpson’s Mother escaped the fire at the museum.
W: But the water system, which came on automatically, left a large mark in the bottom right-hand corner. Actually, the frame was broken when it was being transported. Fortunately, the painting itself didn’t tear.
Text 4
W: I’m looking for a new table for my dining room. It needs to seat at least six.
M: Do you have a particular style in mind? We have this beautiful brown square table on sale.
W: But I’d prefer a round one.
Text 5
M: Hello! May I order supper now?
W: Sorry, I’m afraid the restaurant has closed, but the bar does burgers and pizzas until midnight. Or we can bring sandwiches to your room if you prefer.
M: Fine. I don’t want to eat burgers or pizzas at night.
Text 6
W: Barry, I called you around 10 last night, but I couldn’t get through.
M: I was being interviewed in a radio program then, so I couldn’t use my phone.
W: I didn’t know that. What did you do in the program?
M: I talked about how I became a designer. So why did you call me?
W: I wanted to know if you’d have time to climb a mountain with us this afternoon. Lisa, David and I want some time outdoors.
M: Me too.
Text 7
M: Marina, could you do me a favor?
W: What’s going on, Austin?
M: You know, my wife is going on holiday with my daughter, and I have to go to Rome on business this Friday morning. Could you please take care of my dog—feed him twice a day and walk him once a day?
W: Oh, I’m afraid I can’t do that. I’m so scared of dogs.
M: How about your husband Robin?
W: He has been working overtime recently. Maybe Thomas can give you a hand—he loves dogs and is free these days.
M: OK. I’ll ask him if he can help me.
Text 8
M: We’ve got exams soon! Have you done much revision?
W: Well, I’ve been studying for two weeks. I just find it boring and I get so tired.
M: You could do the revision a couple of hours in the morning and then do the rest later in the day. Personally, I prefer to do it all in the evenings, but that doesn’t suit everyone.
W: Good idea. Anyway, this time next month, the exams will be over. Shall we organize a party?
M: Sure. We could have it at my place. My roommates won’t mind. How about on Friday 25th?
W: But that’s the very last day of the exams. I think Saturday would be better—giving us time to recover.
M: You’re probably right. On Sunday, some people might go away then or have other plans.
W: We’ll talk about food and music nearer the time—I have to go and review now!
Text 9
M: Hey, Connie! Good to see you back in the office.
W: Great to see you again.
M: Well, you were gone for two weeks. I’m still not clear why you left.
W: Oh, I went to do some volunteer work in mountain areas.
M: So how did you even get into it?
W: A college friend put me in touch with a local organization. You know, a lot of young people are looking for ways to give back to society.
M: Great. But how did you get our manager to approve the leave of absence? He’s strict with time off.
W: As for Anderson, he grew up in a poor area as well and he really sees value in this kind of project. Exactly, this experience will be of benefit to my current work as well.
M: Yeah. It must be interesting but tiring. I want to do so. How can I participate?
W: Oh, I’m sending you an email about the organization so that you can join us.

Back to the news. Last Friday a storm hit two villages destroying fourteen houses. Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows. One person was killed, and nine were badly injured and taken to hospital. A number of other people received small injuries. Altogether over two hundred were left homeless as a result of the storm.
A farmer said the storm began early in the morning and lasted over an hour. He was in the kitchen with his wife and his children when they heard a loud noise. A few minutes later their house fell down on top of them. They managed to climb out, but then he saw that one of his children was missing. He went back inside and found him safe but very frightened.
A woman said that her husband had just left for work when she noticed that her house was shaking. She rushed outside immediately with her children. There was no time for her to take anything. A few minutes later, the roof came down. Soldiers went to the area to help the people in trouble.
