The cst f cmplexity in supply chains
Adam Smith, the father f mdern capitalism, famusly thught that fair markets required a cmmn mral framewrk between buyer and seller. That’s n surprise, cnsidering that his ideas came ut f the 18th-century marketplace, in __21__ prducers and cnsumers were likely t be neighburs. Advances in technlgy, transprt and cmmunicatins have taken us a lng way since then, __22__ (create) cmplex glbal supply chains. These __23__ (reduce) cnsumer prices but intrduced risks f their wn, frm labur explitatin and envirnmental degradatin.
One f the csts f these supply chains has been the rise f pwerful crprate middlemen between hme buyers and sellers. These middlemen, including Big Tech platfrms like Amazn, make it pssible fr us t buy gds made __24__ the ther side f the wrld, but this cnnective pwer is threatening accuntability by creating s much separatin between buyers and sellers __25__ it’s impssible t match up with the real cst f cnvenience and lw prices.
There are plenty f examples __26__ (supprt) the case, frm textiles made with child labur, t the unequal rents taken by middlemen in financial services r platfrm technlgy. In the latter, lack f infrmatin equality makes it difficult fr market participants t have a(n) __27__ (share) understanding f what is being bught and sld.
The tw big questins are hw t create system change and __28__ will bear the cst f it. There are n simple answers t __29__ f the questins, thugh technlgy ffers new pssibilities t cnnect buyers and sellers. Direct-t-cnsumer retailers and 3D printing, which __30__ (allw) fr shrter supply chains, are bth examples f this, thugh neither currently prvides anywhere near the scale t replace current systems f finance r manufacturing.

    T Gd T G
Arund the cuntry, apps that cnnect custmers t businesses with leftver fd have begun t spread. The __31__ is simple: Restaurants and grcery stres thrw away huge amunts f fd every day. Rather than __32__ it, apps like T Gd T G and Flashfd help businesses sell it at a reduced price. They claim that the businesses and buyers are helping the envirnment because the fd wuld therwise becme fd waste, a big cntributr t climate change.
In the United States, custmers in 12 cities can lk thrugh restaurants and stres n T Gd T G, then reserve “surprise bags” that typically cst abut $4 t $6 and cntain fd that wuld have been __33__ at rughly three times that amunt.
Several fd waste experts expressed __34__ that these types f apps culd help limit the amunt f wasted fd. And even thugh charitable rganizatins ften redirect unwanted fd frm restaurants and grcery stres t fd banks and cmmunity kitchens, there’s space fr all f these kinds f slutins t __35__.
One cmplicatin is that, accrding t interviews with several cmpanies selling n T Gd T G, at least a few items fr sale there aren’t __36__ what buyers might think f as “fd waste.” The wner f a Baltimre dessert shp said she cnsidered the app a(n) __37__ tl t reach new custmers by selling what she called “little samples.” A beer cmpany wner said he used the app t sell __38__ prducts, but als sld new flavrs there in hpes f attracting new custmers.
Mr. Crummie, the T Gd T G directr, said the app __39__ this type f behavir. “If smebdy is paying $5, they shuld be receiving $15 wrth f fd,” he said. “S it’s nt a(n) __40__ platfrm.”

ChatGPT became the httest issue due t its ability t prduce human-sunding essays, petry, and screenplays n virtually any subject in secnds. Sn after ChatGPT was released, the ptential fr it t be misused t d things such as spread misinfrmatin and write junk mails became apparent. Schls and educatrs als have warned f the ptential fr students t use it t write essays r ther wrk they have been assigned. Last December, the sftware passed all three parts f the U.S. Medical Licensing Examinatin as part f a research experiment.
S the startup, OpenAI behind the viral chatbt, revealed a tl fr detecting text generated by artificial intelligence amid grwing cncerns the technlgy will be abused by cheaters, junk mail senders and thers. OpenAI said that its s-called AI classifier was designed t help peple distinguish between text written by a human versus a range f artificial intelligence prgrams—nt just ChatGPT.
OpenAI said it had schls in mind when develping its latest classifier tl. “We recgnize that identifying AI-written text has been an imprtant pint f discussin amng educatrs, and equally imprtant is recgnizing the limits and impacts f AI-generated text classifiers in the classrm,” it said.
The classifier isn’t gd enugh n its wn, thugh it can be used t g with methds that educatrs, emplyers and thers rely n t determine the surce f a piece f text. In evaluatins, the new tl crrectly identified 26% f AI-written text as “likely AI-written”, while it als had false psitives 9% f the time in which it incrrectly labeled human-written text as AI-written. Anther prblem is that the tl can’t easily tell if a list f facts—U.S. state capitals fr example—was written by a persn r AI, because the crrect answer wuld be the same. AI-written text can als be edited t escape the classifier.
“While it is impssible t reliably detect all AI-written text, classifiers like urs can be updated and re-trained based n successful attacks,” OpenAI said. “But it is unclear whether detectin has an advantage in the lng-term.”
63.ChatGPT’s passing the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam is mentined t __________.
    A. accunt fr its perating principlesB. illustrate its cmplex structure
    C. emphasize its grwing ppularity D. warn against its ptential danger

    A. Deepening the impact f AI writers.
    B. Identifying the texts generated by AI.
    C. Prmting the use f AI in classrm discussin.
    D. Arusing educatrs’ awareness f AI-related technlgy.
65.What can be cncluded frm the evaluatin f AI classifier?
    A. It is a wrk-in-prgress. B. It is gd at string factual infrmatin.
    C. It can help a jurnalist t edit a text.D. It is a reliable educatinal tl.
66.What des OpenAI think f AI classifier?
    A. It will be reliable after cntinuus self-update and retraining.
    B. Whether it can help educatrs in the lng-term is ut f questin.
    C. Whether it can slve the prblems as intended remains a questin.
    D. It will succeed in detecting all human-written texts in the near future.
    Sectin C
Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Fill in each blank with a prper sentence given in the bx. Each sentence can be used nly nce. Nte that there are tw mre sentences than yu need.
Deepfake technlgy is nw a threat t everyne
Last Octber, MIT Prf. Sinan Aral warned his Twitter fllwers that he had discvered a vide f himself that he hadn’t recrded supprting an investment fund’s stck-trading algrithm (算法). In reality, it wasn’t Prf. Aral in the vide, but an artificial-intelligence creatin in his likeness, r what is knwn as a highly persuasive “deepfake.”
It is striking that scammers (诈骗犯) targeted Prf. Aral, cnsidering he is a leading expert n the study f misinfrmatin nline. __67__ Thanks t a number f free deepfake apps that are just a click away, anyne can becme a victim f such a scam.
The term deepfake has cme t mean the use f AI t create fake media in which smene appears t be ding r saying what in reality they haven’t dne r said. __68__ But psitive use cases are likely t be vershadwed in cming years by the technlgy’s ptential rle in financial scam, identity theft, etc.
Anther big challenge is that in an nline wrld where peple can uplad cntent f unknwn names, it can be difficult t find the individuals behind deepfakes. __69__
One such slutin is t detect deepfakes thrugh machine-learning methds. While these detectrs can be successful in the shrt term, peple lking t avid such systems will likely just respnd with better technlgy, creating a cntinuing and expensive cat-and-muse game. __70__ While lawmaking eventually may ffer prtectin against deepfakes, I believe the market culd be quicker—prvided we, as cnsumers and citizens, care.

    IV. Summary Writing
Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Summarize the main idea and the main pint(s) f the passage in n mre than 60 wrds. Use yur wn wrds as far as pssible.
Why yu’re mre creative in cffee shps
Sme f the mst successful peple in histry have dne their best wrk in cffee shps. Pabl Picass, JK Rwling, Bb Dylan – whether they’re painters, writers r singer-sngwriters, peple acrss natins and centuries have tapped int their creativity wrking away at a table in a café.
There are many ways cffee shps activate ur creativity in a way ffices and hmes dn’t.
Sme f us stick in ur earbuds (耳塞) as sn as we sit dwn t wrk in a public setting. But a 2012 study published in the Jurnal f Cnsumer Research shwed that a lw-t-mderate level f relaxing nise n all sides in a place like a cafeteria can actually increase yur creative utput. The idea is that if yu’re very slightly distracted frm the task at hand by backgrund nise, it enhances yur abstract thinking ability, which can lead t mre creative idea generatin.
Anther study frm 2019 had similar findings, that is, the right amunt f nise benefits ur senses. And audi stimuli in the backgrund als help us imprve decisin making.
There’s als the fact that in a cffee shp, we’re surrunded by peple wh’ve cme t d the same thing as us, which acts as a mtivatr. A 2016 study backed up this idea when researchers asked participants sitting next t each ther in frnt f a cmputer t d a task n the same screen. The study shwed that “simply perfrming a task next t a persn wh makes a lt f effrt in a task will make yu d the same”. One f the biggest things abut cffee shps is the scial-facilitatin effect: yu g there, yu see ther peple wrking and it puts yu in a md where yu just naturally start wrking as well.
