Growing up, I thought math class was something to be endured, not enjoyed. I disliked memorizing formulas (公式) and taking tests, all for the dull goal of getting a good grade. One of my teachers told my mother that I was “slow”. But my problem wasn’t with math itself. In fact, when a topic seemed particularly interesting, I would go to the library and read more about it.
By high school, no one told me that I could become a professional mathematician. What I wanted to do then was to play college football. My goal was to get an athletic scholarship to attend a Big Ten school.
The chances of that happening were very low. But that didn’t stop my coaches from encouraging me to believe I could reach my goal, and preparing and pushing me to work for it. They made video tapes of my performances and sent them to college coaches around the country. In the end, a Big Ten school, Penn State, did offer me a scholarship.
I wish math teachers were more like football coaches. Students are influenced by more than just the quality of a lesson plan. They also react to the passion of their teachers and the engagement of their peers and they try to achieve a sense of purpose. They get advantages from detailed and exact instructions and constant feedback (反馈).
Until I got to college, I didn’t really know what mathematics was. I still thought of it as laborious (耗时费力的) calculations. Then my professor handed me a book and suggested that I should think about a particular problem. It wasn’t easy, but it was attractive. My professor kept giving me problems, and I kept chasing them, even though I couldn’t always solve them immediately. The mathematical research I was doing had little in common with what I did in my high school classrooms. Instead, it was closer to the math and logic puzzles I did on my own as a boy. It gave me the same sense of wonder and curiosity, and it rewarded creativity. I am now a Ph.D candidate (候选人) in mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
24.Why did the writer think math class in school was “something to be endured” before entering college?
A.Because he wasn’t interested in math.
B.Because his math teachers didn’t care to push him.
C.Because he was too smart and talented for math class.
D.Because he was training hard for an athletic scholarship.
25.We can conclude that after entering college, the writer ________.
A.was busy looking for math problems to solve
B.studied on his own just as he was in high school
C.met with laborious calculations in his studies
D.began to realize what mathematics really is
26.What is the best title for the text?
A.Interest is the best teacher B.Be the best — you can make it
C.Math, taught like football D.Once your teacher, always your teacher
C
Schoolchildren spend most of their time surrounded by their peers (同龄人). They spend a lot more time with classmates, teammates and fellow club members than with adults in their lives. Peer pressure can have a huge influence on the lives of children in grades two through twelve.
From birth through age six, the family shapes a child’s sense of identity (个性). Parents and brothers and sisters affect a child’s likes, dislikes, tastes in clothing, food and music and, perhaps most importantly, values. Once children enter school, they form connections to the larger group of their peers. This group brings new ideas and experiences. Peer pressure happens when a student’s actions are influenced by this group. The “pressure” happens when peers suggest or demand actions different from the child’s normal behavior and values.
Peer pressure leads to some disturbing negative behavior in schoolchildren. In the USA, about 75% of high school students have tried alcohol (酒) offered by their friends in middle or high school. According to a survey, students felt pressured by their peers between 35 and 49% of the time. The power of peer pressure can result from a schoolchild’s growing desire (渴望) to fit into a group.
Thankfully, peer pressure can also be positive. For example, wanting to join an athletic group of friends may force a student who has been sitting for a long time to try out for the soccer team. In a survey on peer pressure, 51% of teenagers felt that peer pressure was sometimes positive. One teenager responded, “Sometimes it can help you gain confidence.” Other examples of positive peer pressure include students encouraging a classmate to run for school president, or friends suggesting that a talented peer try out for a talent show.
27.What leads to schoolchildren’s peer pressure?
A.The identity shaped by their family. B.The connections with their classmates.
C.The childhood experiences with their friends. D.The differences in their behavior and values.
28.Why do some schoolchildren behave negatively under peer pressure?
A.To kill their boring time. B.To fit into a peer group.
C.To help gain confidence. D.To improve social skills.
29.What does the author think of peer pressure?
A.Peer pressure does more harm than good.
B.Peer pressure is very good for schoolchildren’s growth.
C.Peer pressure is not necessarily bad for school children.
D.Peer pressure plays an important role in shaping a child’s values.
D
It’s not easy growing up. Growing up can be a real “pain” for some of us. We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren’t allowed to do all the things we like. Sometimes we feel sad, sometimes we are fearful, and sometimes we just don’t understand why we can’t stay young forever. But we should take a look back on all the hardships (苦难) in life with a positive attitude (态度) and learn from them. We should realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains!
Throughout our lives we are going to face many challenges and pains, but we should never let these obstacles keep us from following our dreams. We must overcome (克服) every obstacle one small step at a time.
As a young girl, my parents forced me to do so many things that I didn’t like. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music and I also hated them. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched (丰富) my life in so many ways. I now realize that my parents and teachers wanted me to have a better life than they did themselves.
We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just part of our life. Think about how we would feel if we had no challenges and lived a life like that. Life would be really boring and meaningless. The future is ours! A little hard work and sweat (汗水) never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps (碰撞) on our road to success, we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!
30.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Growing pains are part of our life.
B.Our growing pains will finally turn into growing gains.
C.We should stop when facing many challenges.
D.Life without challenges is boring and meaningless.
31.The underlined word “obstacles” in Paragraph 2 refers to things that ________.
A.make it easy for you to do something B.make it difficult for you to do something
C.make you happy all the time D.make you full of energy
32.What does the author now think about what her parents did for her in the past?
A.She is angry with them. B.She is dissatisfied with them.
C.She is thankful to them. D.She couldn’t forgive them.
33.What would be the best title for this passage?
A.No Pain, No Gain B.Growing Pains and Gains
C.Growing up is a Pain D.Growing up is Easy

Huang Meihua is a 19-year-old girl from Sichuan province. In the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, she suffered serious injuries and her legs had to be cut off after that. Recently, she has received an invitation from a Canadian college to experience flying courses during the coming winter vacation.
Several years ago, a powerful earthquake struck Southwest China’s Sichuan province. 11-year-old Huang Meihua failed to escape as she was pinned down under stairs in the school building in Beichuan county. She had to be sent to hospital on a helicopter. Since that day she has dreamt of flying a plane.
Coming from a small town, Huang could not speak or write English. But the ambitious girl found every possible way to make it up by herself. And she scored 98 points in the final exam, up from 66 in the midterm. “Some people think that disabled people are weak or weird,” she said, “so I want to be a better person to influence everyone around me.”
When the Canadian college came to her school to enroll students, the staff heard about Huang’s story and decided to offer her a chance. The course in February in Vancouver will last three weeks, including five to ten hours’ flying and basic knowledge of flying. The college will make a comprehensive evaluation(综合评价)on how well she has mastered the knowledge and skills and her physical adaptation.
Taking about the course, Huang said with confidence that “flying an airplane doesn’t need to use feet. Now that the college has chosen me, I think I can make it.”
