I bought a jasmine plant for my office. When I bought it, I was told it would bloom(开花)and the sweet smell would fill my office. I had the plant for two months, and every day I looked at it, but there weren't any flowers or pleasant smell. I was not happy, so I gave the plant to my friend Linda.
One day, another friend Mary called and invited me to her office. When I walked in, her jasmine flowers surprised me. I reached out to touch the flowers. Mary cut some and gave them to me. I couldn't help smelling them. Surrounded by the sweet smell of only a handful of these flowers, I suddenly understood something.
Mary bought her plant the same time I did. It took a year for her jasmine to bloom. I was so impatient for mine to bloom; regretfully, I gave it away.
In a way my life is like the jasmine plant. I need to be patient and let things happen.
Last Sunday Linda told me that she was going abroad the next week. Before she left, she retured the plant to me. This time I am going to wait. I have learned that when we want something in our life, we have to be patient. I am slowly learning to have that patience to wait for my jasmine to bloom.
    51. What did Mary give the writer?
    A. A jasmine plant. B. Some jasmine flowers.
    C. The writer's jasmine plant. D. Linda's jasmine flowers.
    52. How long did it take for Mary's jasmine to bloom?
    A. One month. B. Two months C. One year. D. Two years.
    53. What do you think the writer wants to tell us from the passage?
    A. Jasmine can be a wonderful plant. B. Flowers can make life better.
    C. Patience is needed in life D. Friendship is necessary for us.
    B
Do you know how to greet people in different countries? Most people will say “Hello” or “Nice to meet you”. That's right. But greeting is never just that. To be both polite and friendly, you should know something more. In most areas and countries, people usually shake hands when they meet. But others are different. What are they? Read on to find out!
    Aloha, Hawaii!
In Hawaii, flowers are everywhere. People use them to welcome visitors. They put the flower on your neck. And they say “aloha” to you!
    Cheek kissing in France
France is famous for people's romantic way of greeting. They touch their cheeks together, and make a kissing sound.
    Take a bath together
People in Brazil love bathing very much. When you visit them, they will invite you to take a bath with them. What a strange way of greeting!
    Hands together and bow
People in Thailand will press their palms together and take a bow. If you hold your hands higher or take a lower bow, you show more respect to others.
    Share your breath
The Maoris in New Zealand touch their noses and foreheads to each other. What's that for? They are sharing breath with their guests. They think it is the best way to greet others.
Bow and stick your tongue out
In Tibet, China, you should bow and stick your tongue out. It shows you have no bad thoughts because you cannot curse (诅咒)people when your tongue's out.

Pandas to meet public in Tangshan
The giant panda house at Tangshan Zoo will officially open to the public in Tangshan, North China's Hebei province, on May 19.
Two giant pandas, Shuangxi and Meibang, are from the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu. Meibang is a twin born in Japan in 2008, while Shuangxi was born in Shanghai in 2011. They will stay in the Tangshan Zoo for the next three years.
The zoo has professional panda keepers and 24-hour security(安保)at the panda house to ensure the safety of the pandas.

Safety awareness needed when visiting zoos
A video that shows a man climbing into the panda house and touching pandas at the Tangshan Zoo in Hebei Province has been spreading online. The netizens thought he was short of safety awareness.
The netizens' comments were on point. There are two rules that should be remembered.
The first is safety. Pandas look cute but are actually beasts that can cause people physical harm.
On the other hand, climbing over a fence is against zoo rules and can harm the animals too. Such behavior should be punished and new rules should be introduced such as establishing visitor blacklists.
    57. What are the same points about the two passages?
    A. The zoos and the animals. B. The zoos and the dates.
    C. The websites and the zoos. D. The animals and the people.

    A. The two giant pandas, Shuangxi and Meibang, were born in Japan.
    B. The two giant pandas, Shuangxi and Meibang, will live in the zoo for twenty years.
    C. The man who climbed into the panda house didn't know the panda might hurt him.
    D. The man who climbed into the panda house was punished.
    60. If you are the zoo-keeper, what should you do next?
    A. To add more professional panda keepers. B. To praise the security staff.
    C. To take off the second page from the website. D. To strengthen the security.
    D
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? If you were like most children, you probably let your imagination run wild. Maybe you dreamed of flying into space or being a famous cook. Then perhaps over the years, your dreams became more realistic. Or you might have given up on some altogether.
It's important to have dreams because dreams can give us the energy to succeed in life. Dreams inspire (鼓励)us. They might take a few years or they might take a lifetime to achieve. But the most important thing is that you're supposed to work toward your dream.
And the best way to do that is by setting goals.
What is the difference between a dream and a goal? It's been said that dreams are the final destination(目的地); goals are the stops along the way. Dreams can be very general. But the steps you take to reach them should be very specific(具体的), Your dreams mean what you want, but goals explain how you'll get there. That makes goal setting a necessary step in reaching your dreams.
Many successful people have spoken about dreams. Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell stressed the importance of working for your dreams. “A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat(汗水), resolution and hard work.” Author Les Brown reminded us that dreams have no age limit. “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”
If you've been dreaming about doing something for years, start today. Write down your dream, and set your goals. Then you'll be on your way to making your dreams come true.
    61. Who did the writer probably write this passage for?
    A. Students. B. Teachers. C. Workers. D. Doctors.
    62. What is the most important for you to realize your dream?
    A. Having a dream. B. Making a promise.
    C. Working for the dream. D. Raising pressure.
    63. What can we mainly learn from the third paragraph?
    A. What your dreams mean. B. What your goals mean.
    C. The difficulties in reaching our goals. D. The differences between dreams and goals.
    64. What can we do according to what Author Les Brown said?
    A. We can learn from many successful people. B. We can have dreams even when we are very old.
    C. We can reach our dream through magic. D. We can reach our dream by setting goals.
    65. What can be the best title for the passage?
    A. What Your Dreams Mean B. Successful People's Ideas about Dreams
    C. Make Your Dreams Come True D. Difficulties in Reaching Goals
    IX. 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
    阅读下面短文,并按要求完成66-70题。
Most of us spend all day at school or work. After a long and busy day, all we want to do is to return to a comfortable home. Smart technology can turn any home into a nicer place to live in.
Smart homes have been around for some time. Scottish company Pico Electronics invented a type of technology called X10 in 1975. It allows household devices (设备), such as lights and alarms, to communicate with each other by using radio waves.
Of course, 5G network connectivity has made smart homes more convenient. Perhaps the most widespread smart home technology is the voice-activated assistant(语音激活助手). Google Home allows users to control nearly any device in their home simply by speaking a few words. This is especially convenient for people with physical disabilities, as they can finish tasks without using heir hands or walking around the house.
Common household devices can become “smart” as well. For example, a sinart rubbish bin can memorize all the things you've thrown away and offer you a shopping list online, while a smart fridge can create dinner recipes (菜谱)according to the vegetables that are being kept inside.
But it's not just about convenience. Smart homes are also good for the environment. By regularly checking your energy use and turning off lights and other devices that you're not using, smart homes can lower how much electricity you use overall. Using less energy means that we make less pollution. That is good for the environment.
