On New Year’s Eve, millions of Americans hear the song Auld Lang Syne. We can also hear this song in some classic movies like The Gold Rush （1925）, Waterloo Bridge （1931） and It's a Wonderful Lije （1946） . It has different versions （版本） around the world.
Actually, Auld Lang Syne is an old Scottish poem （诗歌）. No one knows who wrote the poem first. A Scottish poet Robert Burns （罗伯特·彭斯）wrote one version in 1796. The title Auld Lang Syne is believed to be an old Scottish way of saying "a long time ago".
The opening lines of the song "Should auld acquaintance be forgotten, and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgotten, and auld long syne? "mean we should have a drink to remember whatever is passing, and remember old friends. Alexander Graham Bell is well-known as the father of the telephone to most people. However, he wasn't the first person to come up with the idea. In fact, an Italian named Antonio Meucci was known as the inventor （发明者） a few years ago. Who is Meucci and why wasn't he famous for his great invention （发明） at the time?
Antonio Meucci was born in Italy in 1808. He studied engineering and drawing. During his studies, Meucci started to do test with electricity （电）. He found that sound could travel through metal wires （金属线） . When people between the two places speak to each other with the wire, they could hear each other talk.
In 1850, Meucci and his wife, Ester, moved to New York. Meucci was worried about his wife, because of her illness. He needed to keep talking to her now and then. To solve this problem, he put some wires between his home and his workshop. This helped them to talk with each other easily.
Later, Meucci invited a group of people to see this new machine. As the voice of a singer was heard through the other side of the wire, they listened in great surprise.
Unluckily, only a few people came to see this. Even worse, the patent （专利） wasn't given to him because he had difficulty communicating in English. Meanwhile, Alexander Graham Bell was working on the same idea and in 1876 the patent for the telephone was given to him.
In 2002, more than 100 years after Meucci's death, his work was finally accepted by the government（政府）. He is now known all over the world as the telephone's inventor.
