At noon, I would race breathlessly home, a ten-minute walk from my school. My mother was waiting for me with pleasure to have lunch while I shared what happened at school.

I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed(排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, hardly had I stepped on stage when every word escaped me. Finally, my teacher asked me to change to a narrator’s(解说员) part. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.

I didn’t tell my mother what had happened that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.

Under the rose vine, we could see yellow dandelions(蒲公英), as if a painter had touched our landscape with shades of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”

“But I like dandelions,” I argued. “All flowers are beautiful even dandelions.”

My mother asked thoughtfully, “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” I nodded, pleased I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. I burst into tears, a mixture of relief and regret swelling up as I told her what had happened.

“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging me as she did. “The narrator’s part is important, too.” Composing myself gradually, I began to accept the narrator’s part. Then came the performance day. I was still nervous, but it was at that very moment that I found a dandelion in my pocket. It was obvious that my mom secretly put the flower there, which magically gave me confidence.

    24. Why did the author get changed to the narrator’s part?

     A. She was shy.  B. She lacked practice.

     C. She disliked the former role. D. She totally forgot the lines.

    25. What did her mother do when the author felt upset?

     A. Her mother made her realize every role counted.

     B. Her mother insisted on her practicing the lines.

     C. Her mother asked her what happened patiently.

     D. Her mother immediately encouraged her to cheer up.

    26. Which of the following can best describe the author’s mother?

     A. Sympathetic but strict.  B. Understanding and wise.

     C. Passionate but anxious.  D. Curious and easy-going.

    27. What does the text mainly tell us?

     A. All that glitters is not gold. B. Actions speak louder than words.

     C. Constant dripping wears away a stone.  D. Every individual can make a difference.

    C

Ever been hungry enough to eat a house? Now, you actually could.

Food waste is a big problem in Japan and globally. Japan produced around 5.7 million tons of food waste in 2019. The government plans to reduce that by around 2.7 million tons by 2030. Tokyo University researchers Kota Machida and Yuya Sakai have developed a way to transform food waste into cement(水泥) for construction use and more. This is the first-ever process created for making cement entirely from food waste. The researchers say their product is four times as strong as traditional concrete. This particular cement can be used to make things like tea cups or chairs as well. However, there’s one additional feature it’s also edible(可食的).

Kota and Yuya are the intelligence behind the formation of Fabula Inc., a company with purposes of reducing food waste, and helping fight global warming.

As expected, something this unique took years to develop. It took a few attempts to find just the right process. Kota and Yuya created the unique technology while researching possible environmentally-friendly materials to replace cement-based concrete. Cement production accounts for 8% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions.

After a few failures, they realized they could get the cement to bind(黏合) by adjusting the temperatures. “The most challenging part was that each type of food waste requires different temperatures,” Yuya said. So the researchers had to observe them and respond in time. In the experiments, Kota and Yuya have successfully made cement using tea leaves, coffee grounds, cabbage and even lunchbox leftovers.

Fabula Inc. is currently working to make tea cups and furniture, but Yuya is thinking a little bit bigger. Their product could provide relief in the form of edible emergency shelters in disaster ones. “For example, if food cannot be delivered to the people, they could eat makeshift beds made out of food cement,” he said. To eat the material, a person needs to break it apart and boil it.

    28. Which is one of Kota and Yuya’s purposes in making use of food waste?

     A. To handle climate change. B. To offer Fabula Inc. more cement.

     C. To warn how serious food waste is. D. To extend concrete’s service life.

    29. What did Kota and Yuya assess previously about making edible cement?

     A. Its damage to the environment. B. Its cost of recycling the cement.

     C. Its difficulties they would face. D. Its popularity among the public.

    30. What made the experiment of making cement out of food waste harder?

     A. Making sure to make cement tasty. B. Selecting correct food waste timely.

     C. Getting cement broken apart easily. D. Regulating the temperatures constantly.

    31. What does the underlined word “makeshift” in the last paragraph mean?

     A. Bendable. B. Strong. C. Temporary. D. Commercial.

    D

The term “quiet quitting” went viral last year, describing people who stay in their jobs but mentally take a step back, for example, working the bare minimum and not making their job the center of their lives. Now in 2023, there is a new workplace trend on the horizon, called “quiet hiring”.

Quiet hiring is a strategy used to fill the critical gaps in a company without hiring new employees. One company has a limited amount of talent and needs to make a call about where it’s going to have the best impact. This year it may need to add five more data scientists to its team to meet the strategic goals. As a solution, it may move five employees from another department only for a short time, like data analysts in the human resources and marketing department, into the five open data scientist roles.

In this case, the boss is saying, “We’re going to intentionally deprioritize(降低优先级) support for HR and marketing for the next six months so that we can increase the productivity of our data science team, and we are saying this sound and clearly. Everyone knows this.” The important distinction with quiet hiring is that a company is openly communicating with employees about its priorities and moving employees to areas that serve those priorities, instead of just loading employees with more work or simply hiring more people.

While being assigned to a new role may seem scary, quiet hiring should be beneficial to employees. If you were asked to take on additional responsibilities, it would indicate your value. Meantime you might say, “If it’s not possible to increase my payment, can we make it so that I can work from home five days a week, reducing my commute(通勤) costs? Or, could I work flexible hours, making it easier for me to live the rest of my life?” An individual conversation may be ineffective. If you’re part of a department or team being asked to switch roles, employ that power and approach human resources as a group.

    32. What does the strategy of quiet hiring refer to?

     A. Adding more positions.  B. Training new employees.

     C. Employing new talent secretly. D. Shifting existing staff to new posts.

    33. What is the feature of a company’s handling quiet hiring?

     A. Innovations are highly valued.

     B. Personnel changes are announced beforehand.

     C. Roles of departments are changed regularly.

     D. Employees are burdened with overwork.

    34. What suggestion does the author offer to employees?

     A. Negotiate on extra jobs.  B. Take on new roles as a team.

     C. Shoulder more duties on work. D. Balance between work and life.

    35. Which is a suitable title for the text?

     A. Hiring more or less?  B. Quiet quitting or quiet hiring?

     C. Quiet hiring: A workplace debate D. Quiet hiring: An upcoming tendency

ChatGPT is part of a new generation of AI systems that can have a discussion and create written work. It can even produce new images and videos based on what it has learned from a large database of digital books, online writings and other media. It’s available for free to anyone on the Internet.          36          It works like a written conversation between the AI system and the person asking it questions.

37          They used it to write poems or songs. Some tried to trick it into making mistakes. Others used it to write email. All of those requests are helping it to get smarter. Its popularity has led its creators to try to lower some people’s expectations.

The New York City education department said it is restricting use of ChatGPT.          38          It also has concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of the content written by ChatGPT. Teachers are now trying to find out how to prevent students using the AI tool for cheating.          39

Jenna Lyle, a spokesperson for New York schools, said the tool may provide quick and easy answers to questions, but it doesn’t build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.          40

In a human-written statement, OpenAI said that it plans to work with educators as it learns how people are experimenting with ChatGPT in the real world. “We don’t want ChatGPT to be used for misleading purposes in schools or anywhere else, so we’re already developing means to help anyone identify text generated by that system,” the company said.

    A. It is also designed to be more user-friendly.

    B. But there’s no stopping a student from using it at home.

    C. It is worried about negative impacts on student learning.

    D. You can watch it produce a school report in a few seconds.

    E. These skills are essential for academic and lifelong success.

    F. Millions of people have played with the tool over the past month.

    G. Blocking the writing tool on school devices and networks is good for students.

Joyce is in the fourth grade and he joined the noisy children of his class as usual. “Children! Silence!” Mangat Madam suddenly entered the class. She announced next week would be math week. “I’d like each of you to work on a project. You could do it individually or in a group.” she instructed. “The topic for the project needs approving tomorrow and it has to be displayed at the math week exhibition. The best project will be awarded and there is also a surprise gift from my side,” she added.

Joyce, who is extremely good at math, sat in the corner seat of the first bench with Karan, an average. Karan asked Joyce if they could work on the math project together. Joyce replied in a prideful tone, “Ha-ha you want to join me. I think I will do the project on my own.” Joyce wanted to get awarded and the surprise gift all for himself from Mangat Madam.

After deep consideration, Joyce decided to work on a math magic quiz on the circuit board. The next day in school, Mangat Madam arrived in the classroom and all the children submitted their topics for math exhibition. They all chose to work in a group except Joyce. In the following days, Joyce gathered all the materials for the project such as wires, bulbs(灯泡), a switch and a thin plywood board(胶合板). He worked out a few mathematical basic operations to be fixed on the board so that when the wire of the circuit touched the right answer, the bulb glowed. Joyce completed the project and was happy with the result.

The evening before the exhibition, while packing his school bags, Joyce again checked the project to see if it was working fine. Alas! All the lights that were to glow did not seem to light at all. Without finding the reason, Joyce was tensed. However, he decided to take the same project to the school as he couldn’t change the topic at the last minute. Then came the next day, and everybody was fascinated in the exhibition.

    第一节

Whether it is Worthwhile to Protect the Mogao Caves

Recently our class had a heated discussion about whether it is important to protect cultural heritage — the Mogao Caves.

About 80% of the students consider it important to protect the Mogao Caves. They think that the cultural heritage is a symbol of great ancient civilization. Most cultural heritage is related to great people, so protecting it shows respect for them. Cultural heritage is of great value and protecting it can make us feel proud of our nation.

However, the rest hold the opinion that it doesn’t matter whether the Mogao Caves is protected. They think it won’t promote the development of society, so it is a waste of time and money to protect it.

As far as I’m concerned, our country’s cultural heritage protection has made great progress, but many problems still exist and need to be solved. Therefore, we should keep our mind clear and take more effective steps to better protect cultural heritage. I think it is significant to protect the Mogao Caves.

    第二节

It was Joyces turn to display his project. Making his way to the platform with heavy steps, Joyce placed all the materials for his project well and began to conduct his math magic quiz on the circuit board. He prayed in his heart that his lights would glow again but in vain. Hearing other students whispering to each other, Joyce’s face flushed with shame. He ducked his head and stepped back to his seat. And then Karan’s team showed their project. With joint efforts, they made it.

Finally, the teacher announced Karan’s team was the winner. All the children burst into thunderous applause on hearing that. Karan and his partners walked up to the front with great excitement. They were awarded and also received the surprise gift from Mangat Madam. After class, Joyce approached Karan, expressed admiration for his team’s project and congratulated on their success sincerely. That day, Joyce learnt the biggest lesson of his life: it is always better to work as a team rather than working alone.
