I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books.There was not one night that I don't remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside.I was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing mom say, “I can't believe what's printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night,just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences,then paragraphs,and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mom said,“The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,”I knew where the candy was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything.I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading.I read for knowledge, and to make A's on my tests. Occasionally, I would read a novel that was assigned,but I didn't enjoy this type of reading. I liked facts,things that are concrete. I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.
Yet,now that I'm growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex,I find myself needing a way to escape.By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character.In these worlds I can become anyone. I don't have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this.I just read to relax.
We're taught to read because it's necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is a vital part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning.And I've found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.

When you were trying to figure out what to buy for the environmentalist on your holiday list, fur probably didn't cross your mind. But some ecologists and fashion enthusiasts are trying to bring back the market for fur made from nutria（海狸鼠）.
Unusual fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn have showcased nutria fur made into clothes in different styles.“It sounds crazy to talk about guilt-free fur-unless you understand that the nutria are destroying vast wetlands every year",says Cree McCree,project director of Righteous Fur.
Scientists in Louisiana were so concerned that they decided to pay hunters $5 a tail. Some of the fur ends up in the fashion shows like the one in Brooklyn last month.
Nutria were brought there from Argentina by fur farmers and let go into the wild.“The ecosystem down there can't handle this non-native species.It's destroying the environment.It's them or us,”says Michael Massimi,an expert in this field.
The fur trade kept nutria in check for decades,but when the market for nutria collapsedin the late 1980s,the cat-sized animals multiplied like crazy.
Biologist Edmond Mouton runs the nutria control program for Louisiana.He says it's not easy to convince people that nutria fur is green, but he has no doubt about it.Hunters bring in more than 300,000 nutria tails a year,so part of Mouton's job these days is trying to promote fur.
Then there's Righteous Fur and its unusual fashion. Model Paige Morgan says,“To give people a guilt-free option that they can wear without someone throwing paint on them-I think that's going to be a massive thing,at least here in New York.”Designer Jennifer Anderson admits it took her a while to come around to the opinion that using nutria fur for her creations is morally acceptable. She is trying to come up with a label to attach to nutria fashions to show it is eco-friendly.

In a world where nearly 6 million fingerprint records of government employees are stolen in one computer hack（非法入侵），and here millions of people are victims of identity theft every year,the next step in cybersecurity may well be mapping your brain.
Researchers at Binghamton University,State University of New York are working on a biometric（生物特征识别的）system that records how your brain reacts to certain images.With a little more polishing,the scientists' brainchild could become the way you get into a safe deposit box, your office or past scanners at the airport.It could replace the password for your online banking, your email or your social media accounts.
They started their project by measuring the brain waves of 30 subjects.The subjects were fitted with a cap that had 30 electrodes（电极） attached to it， and then shown various images and symbols -celebrity faces,words,pictures of food-on a computer screen in 200-millisecond bursts.The brain's reaction was recorded.
The idea is that every time a person needs to use a “password”, he or she goes through the same procedure,and the results are matched with their first-time reaction. If the “brainprint” is compromised -like what happened with the fingerprint records-then the system is merely reset by running another set of images and collecting a different set of brain waves. “Even if that was stolen,you could just cancel it and recordone to something else,”says professor Laszlo.
Laszlo and her team have shown that their system can be 100 percent accurate.So one of the more difficult parts of making the system practical already has been overcome. Now,they're spending much time recording accurate brainprints with as few as three electrodes,which could make recording in the future as easy as wearing a pair of special glasses. They're also working with cheaper materials and different methods to see if they can bring the cost down.

The local vet was still at his office, so I loaded the poor creature into a taxi and headed there. After a quick check on the poor dog, he shook his head with regret. He promised me he would try his best but Shep was unlikely to-get through it unless there was a miracle. While the vet treated the sores carefully, I tried to drop water in Shep's mouth and fed him with food bit by bit. I never gave up hope of getting him saved. Many times I would stroke his neck gently, whispering something in his ear to encourage him to hold on. It turned out that so weak was he that he had to stay in the vet's.
Three days later, when I opened the door of the vet's, Shep welcomed me with wild enthusiasm. He wagged his tail from left to right as if to say “Thank you”. He was gaining strength and improving for the better. Tears of joy filling my eyes, I knew all our efforts were worthwhile. Soon, the dog recovered from severe sores and I adopted him, taking him home with excitement. Once in a while, I would go to that bar with Shep, a drink for myself and potato chips for him. I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books.There was not one night that I don't remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside.I was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded.

When you were trying to figure out what to buy for the environmentalist on your holiday list, fur probably didn't cross your mind. But some ecologists and fashion enthusiasts are trying to bring back the market for fur made from nutria（海狸鼠）.

The local vet was still at his office, so I loaded the poor creature into a taxi and headed there. After a quick check on the poor dog, he shook his head with regret. He promised me he would try his best but Shep was unlikely to-get through it unless there was a miracle. While the vet treated the sores carefully, I tried to drop water in Shep's mouth and fed him with food bit by bit. I never gave up hope of getting him saved. Many times I would stroke his neck gently, whispering something in his ear to encourage him to hold on. It turned out that so weak was he that he had to stay in the vet's.
Three days later, when I opened the door of the vet's, Shep welcomed me with wild enthusiasm. He wagged his tail from left to right as if to say “Thank you”. He was gaining strength and improving for the better. Tears of joy filling my eyes, I knew all our efforts were worthwhile. Soon, the dog recovered from severe sores and I adopted him, taking him home with excitement. Once in a while, I would go to that bar with Shep, a drink for myself and potato chips for him. What would have happened if I hadn't stepped out on that stormy night? Care and kindness really made a big difference to both of us.

When I came to the US,I was only thinking about being a carpenter, but I could not read the newspaper. And I could not understand the news on television or movies or anything like this. So, I entered the city college to take English classes for foreign students. I was very proud that I was going to a college because no one in my family ever went to any college or to any university. You know, when you're 15 years old in my country, you finish school and then you learn a trade. And that's exactly what I did. When I was 15 years old, I learned how to be a carpenter. A year later, I came to America. Luckily, I met a very good teacher who encouraged me to take some math classes, business classes, and history classes, and I became a full-time college student. And today, when I look back, I'm so happy because you never know where life will take you. All of a sudden, I started making money because I was really good at math. You know, how to work out everything with math is so important. This is something that I learned when I started my own business, which is doing really well.
