Years ago, grandma received a phone call from a stranger. The person told her that she had won a prize, but she would need to send in some money in order to receive her winnings. Grandma immediately smelled a rat but played along.
She asked calmly for the name of the caller, the phone number and where to send her payment. He gave her some information and told grandma she would be receiving a phone call the next day and that a FedEx employee would come to her house to collect the money.
After the phone call grandma called the chief of police in her town and told him that she had got enough information to get them jailed. But the police chief told her there was nothing he could do and told grandma just to ignore these bad people who were trying to take advantage of an elderly person. Grandma wasn’t happy with this response. She decided to take matters into her own hands.
The next day, she got another call from the scammers (骗子), who told her to write out a check for several thousand dollars and wait at home for a FedEx employee to pick up the check late in the afternoon. True to their words, the FedEx employee arrived. Grandma was told that whatever he was picking up was to be sent away overnight and the payment, all based on weight, would be billed to the party that requested the pickup.
On hearing the information, a good idea hit grandma and then she took out from her bedroom a pack of junk she had been keeping for years.
“Can I send all this stuff?” Grandma asked.
“Sure, you can,” the employee said. “I’ll just need to get a big box.”
As the employee packed items into the box, grandma put inside a note saying “Go to hell!” in big letters with her name at the bottom. Grandma said sweetly, with a big smile, “I really appreciate your help.” When the FedEx truck drove away, grandma said she felt an unbelievable amount of joy. She never heard from the scammers again.
24.When did grandma recognize being cheated?
A.When she was called to receive her winnings.
B.After she got full information about the stranger.
C.When a FedEx employee came to her house to collect the money.
D.After she had a talk with the policeman on the phone.
25.What made grandma decide to deal with scammers on her own?
A.The answer to her request from the police.
B.Her desire to show off her courage.
C.The encouragement from the FedEx employee.
D.Her decision not to trouble others.
26.Which of the following can best describe grandma?
A.Calm and unselfish. B.Joyful and friendly.
C.Humorous and careful. D.Smart and brave.
27.Why did grandma thank the FedEx worker?
A.Because he helped her clean the house.
B.Because he gave her a lift to the police station.
C.Because he warned her against bad people.
D.Because he allowed the junk delivery.

The search for new, clean energy sources has occupied the attention of scientists and politicians for years. One common resource for green energy is the wind. A new twist on this old resource could cause the energy output of wind-power plants to rocket.
Standard wind-power plants rely on solid support and generally can only reach a height of 200 meters or so. Higher than that, winds tend to be stronger and more consistent, but the challenge is figuring out how to gain the energy from those winds.
Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences in Germany have formed a kite-power research group. The group is working to develop kites with wings connected to electrical generators (发电机) on the ground.
The research group’s goal is to design a kite that can operate on its own for 24 hours. Research has begun, but many challenges remain, including making the generators more efficient and perfecting the automatic flight control and the structure of the kites. Nevertheless in June 2012, they demonstrated that their kites could operate automatically at an altitude of up to 700 meters.
Meanwhile, in Italy, researchers are working on a similar power generator that relies on kites. When the generator, called KiteGen, senses the wind blowing, kites are released from the ends of poles with high-resistance cables (线) to control their height and angle. These cables are able to move the kites if the system senses incoming objects such as planes, helicopters or even individual birds. The kites themselves are light, tough and able to reach fairly high altitudes. They circle around in the wind, which sets the core of the generator in motion, producing electric current.
KiteGen has the potential to be very cost-effective in the long run. After the initial cost of designing and setting up the plant, little additional investment will be necessary, apart from standard maintenance. The plant also requires relatively little space, which makes it ideal for cities and means that multiple plants can be set up to provide even more energy.
Kite power has the potential to greatly improve on current wind-power strategies. In the future, it may be an efficient, cost-effective supplement (补充) to the other sources of energy we use, or even a replacement for some of them.
28.What does the underlined expression “a new twist” probably mean in the first paragraph?
A.A strict standard. B.A challenging task.
C.A strong motivation. D.A clever idea.
29.If the wind-power plants are higher than 200 meters, what is the problem?
A.It is a waste of money. B.It is extremely dangerous.
C.It is hard to attain the energy. D.It is totally unrealistic.
30.Why do both of the researches adopt kites?
A.Kites can fly high. B.Kites are a new trend.
C.Kites are eco-friendly. D.Kites can replace old equipment.
31.What is the author’s attitude towards kite power?
A.Cautious. B.Optimistic. C.Unclear. D.Critical.

Handwritten Chinese characters (文字) can be beautiful. I still remember looking at Chinese and not understanding anything it said and yet feeling a strong attraction (吸引力). In fact, some students start learning Chinese because of the characters. After having studied Chinese for a while, I realized that handwriting in Chinese takes a very long time to learn.
Living as we do in a digital era (数字时代) with smartphones and computers, most students sooner or later ask themselves this question: Is it really necessary to learn how to write by hand in Chinese? When using smartphones or computers, we can use phonetic input (语音输 入) systems, which choose the characters we want for us as long as we can remember how they are pronounced. Since we enter different characters, we seldom need to be able to recognize the difference between characters in detail; the computer makes the right choices for us. Do we really need to write Chinese by hand at all?
I think most people agree that you should learn to write at least some characters at some point as a student of Chinese, although not necessarily straight away and not necessarily all the characters that you can say. But unless you don’t care about written language at all, you should learn the basics of handwriting. Without it, it will be very hard to understand characters. You don't need to be a calligraphy master (书法大师), but you do need basic handwriting skills to do this. Simply looking at things is, as usual, a bad way of learning.
I think learning the most common 500 characters or so is a good idea for all students. If you actually want to write by hand, increase that to 1, 000. Then learn to handwrite characters outside of the 1, 000 most common on a need-to-know basis.
32.What does the author think of Chinese characters?
A.They are less communicative than English words.
B.They attract some foreigners to learn Chinese.
C.They show the greatness of Chinese culture.
D.They are not really that difficult.
33.What can we infer about characters in paragraph 2?
A.Characters are very difficult for foreigners to learn.
B.People believe learning to write characters is important.
C.People doubt the necessity of learning to write characters.
D.Characters may disappear with the development of society.
34.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Understanding characters.
B.Being a calligraphy master.
C.Keeping a good learning habit.
D.Learning basic handwriting skills.
35.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Is it necessary to learn to write Chinese characters by hand?
B.When was the last time you wrote something by hand?
C.What rules are there for handwriting?
D.How to write Chinese characters on a computer?

A couple in Virginia Beach is forever thankful to two surfers (冲浪者) who also happen to be health care workers. “We’d like to express our appreciation to the heroes who saved Todd on that beach, ”the couple said.
Todd, 59, and Donna, 58, woke up early on October 2 to go for a bike ride and take pictures of the sunrise. While walking barefoot along the shoreline and enjoying the sights, Todd suddenly fell down.
Donna thought her husband was joking. But she quickly realized this was no laughing matter. Todd’s heart stopped beating and he turned blue. “I called his name and cried for help:’Help! Please help Todd’, ”Donna said later.
Tyler Volpe, a surfer, was in the water when Todd fell down. Volpe is also a physician assistant. He heard Donna’s cries for help. “I knew it wasn’t normal, ”he said. “I came flying out of the water. ”
Paul Roy, 24, a health care worker at a local hospital, was also surfing that morning. Volpe started chest compressions (按压) while Roy breathed into Todd’s mouth. Then, they switched positions, A woman on the beach put her arm around Donna and prayed with her. “I really thought he was dead, ”Donna said.
As Roy and Volpe continued CPR, Todd breathed a few times. The sea water was starting to come in. Other surfers used their boards to form a wall between the rescue effort and the water.
“They kept him alive until the ambulance got there, ”Donna said. “It could have been two minutes; it could have been 10 days. I was watching my life end with his. ”
Doctors used a defibrillator (电击器) to shock his heart and bring back his heartbeat. On the second shock, he finally came to himself.

Good morning, everyone. I am Cathy Weaver from NPR. Pakistan is facing the heaviest rains in the last 30 years and sudden floods caused by the heavy rains have killed more than 1, 100 people. Floods have washed away numbers of bridges, roads, homes and hotels. Large areas of crops are under water. I have seen many people sheltering on railway tracks and in schools. The Pakistani aid workers who I speak to are pretty used to dealing with disasters, but even they say they are shocked. They have never seen such serious damage caused by a disaster. Almost all the roads are badly damaged, making the rescue work rather difficult. Now a great many soldiers and volunteers are struggling around the clock. Pakistani officials have said that the government will provide housing to those who have lost their homes. International aid is being organized for the flood-affected areas. Airplanes from foreign countries landed on Sunday, carrying food and water supplies. The United Nations has also offered $ 3 million to help.
