Becky and Steve walked to school on a winter morning. Becky wore a hat and gloves but no scarf. Steve wore a hat and two scarves, but he didn't have any gloves. They both felt very cold.
Then Becky had an idea! "What if I trade you one glove for one of your scarves?^, Becky said. "Then both of our necks would be warm, and we'd each have one warm hand. We could put the other hand in our pockets. "
    “Good idea!" said Steve.
After they shared the scarf and glove, they began to feel warmer.
A few minutes later Mrs. Brown appeared. C6Did I just see you barter? " she asked.
Becky and Steve looked puzzled(迷惑的). "What's barter?" Becky asked.
"Barter means trade things without using money", Mrs. Brown explained. "You two traded a scarf and a glove so you could be warm. Did you know that traders bartered for thousands of years?"
“Really? How did it work?" Steve asked.
Mrs. Brown said, “Well, traders who had too much of one thing, such as salt or cloth or pigs, would exchange them with other traders for other things that they needed. Trading grew and developed, but it had problems. "
    "Like what?” Becky asked.
“Suppose you raised chickens. You could trade the chickens and eggs for what you needed. But if the chickens got away__"
    “I wouldn’t have anything to trade! "
    “Exactly!” said Mrs. Brown.
“Now you see why people began to use money to trade. "Mrs. Brown added.
"Is it true that silver and gold coins were used before paper money? "Steve asked.
“Yes, but they were too heavy to carry? "Mrs. Brown said. "People then began to write promises on paper instead of trading coins. That was how paper money got its start. "
“Wow!" said Becky, “but I guess people still trade sometimes, the way Steve and I did today! "

Modem inventions make our everyday lives easier, but many of these inventions also cause problems. Cars bum oil to get us where we want to go. This pollutes the air. Electric (电力 的)heat and light make our homes warm and welcoming, but they also burn up coal and oil. We need factories, but factory waste pollutes our waterways.
People believe that changing the way we live in the future may actually improve our planet's health. We can use cleaner energy and fewer chemicals as we build the towns of tomorrow. Here are some ideas that many people think will make our planet a cleaner place to live.
More and more people will be working in their homes by using computers. Today, more electric trains are being built, and electric cars are being developed. Shopping and entertainment (娱乐)may be as close as a ride on an Earth-friendly bicycle.
We'll grow corn, fruits, and vegetables close to home, either in our gardens or on nearby farms. The farms will use different kinds of insects to stop harmful bugs(虫子). That will help keep chemicals out of our food.
Online stores will be popular, but we'll still have shopping malls. They will be small, just with space for parking bikes. They will use natural sunlight to cut down on energy use. They will also recycle the objects you buy there, when you are finished using them.
Solar energy is available now to some homeowners. In the future, every home will probably use this kind of energy, which is from sunlight. Our appliances, such as cookers, dish washers, washing machines and fridges, will run on it.
    23. Why are the examples used by the writer in Paragraph 1?
    A. To express a result. B. To describe the problems.

Jules Verne5s novel, Around the world in 80 days, has inspired(激发)many people to travel around the world in unusual ways. It has also inspired several films, TV series, and even theater productions.
So where did Jules Verne get the idea from? Verne told a reporter that he had been sitting in a cafe in Pairs one day when he saw a newspaper advertisement for the first tourist trip around the world in 1872.
In Jules Verne9s story, a wealthy English gentleman, Phileas Fogg, accepts a bet(赌注)of £20, 000 that he can travel round the world in 80 days. Phileas Fogg is a man who is very hard to please. For example, his servant loses his job because he brings Fogg some water to wash in that is 29°C instead of 30°C.
Then Fogg has a new servant, Passepartout, and on Wednesday, 2nd October, 1872, they set off on the journey round the world. While he's in India, Fogg falls in love with an Indian girl, Aouda. The journey ends back in London with Fogg believing that he has come back a day too late and that he has lost the bet. He tells Aouda that he cannot marry her now, as he's too poor. Passepartout learns that they have got the date wrong. They travelled east, so they still have a day left. Fogg hurries to his club and arrives there in time to win the bet and the story ends happily.
The story is an easy read. The humorous twists and turns of the story keep you interested during your reading. It is an exciting story that I would strongly advise all my friends to read.

    C. He had heard a story about a round-the-world holiday.
    D. He saw an advertisement for a trip around the world.
    29. Why can’ t Phileas Fogg marry Aouda?
    A. Because he doesn5t love her any more.
    B. Because his new servant stops him to do that.
    C. Because he thinks he doesn't have enough money to marry.
    D. Because he has to set off another journey immediately.
    30. The text is most probably a part of ___________________.
    A. an advertisement B. a piece of news C. a joke D. a book review

A black cat crosses your path? That’s bad luck. Walk under a ladder (梯子)? That’s bad luck, too. Break a mirror-seven years of bad luck! Kill a bee? You got it...bad luck!
But not everything brings bad luck. Some things bring good luck, too. For example, if you carry a rabbit’s foot with you at all times that will bring you good luck. Of course, nowadays, lucky rabbit’s feet aren’t made of real rabbit’s feet. An acorn (橡子) in your pocket is good luck, too. If you make a wish when you see a shooting star cross the sky, the wish will come true.
If you throw rice on a just-married couple, they will have many children. If you catch a falling leaf on the first day of auturnn, you will have good luck all year. If you blow out all the candles on your birthday cake in one blow, you will get whatever you want.
Are any of these things true? You may have blown out all the candles on your birthday cake in one blow last year, but did you get everything you wanted? Probably not. If you walk under a ladder and a bucket of paint falls on your head-that’s pretty bad luck. But if some candy or fruit falls, that’s good luck.
In fact, good luck and bad luck are only “superstitions (迷信). Millions of people all over the world believe in superstitions, especially good luck ones. But remember, no amount of acorns is going to save you if you make your decisions because of silly superstitions.

A.You will soon have a baby. B.Your wish will come true.
C.The couple will have many babies. D.The couple will get everything they wanted.
7.What does the last paragraph want to tell us?
A.Acorns have nothing to do with good luck.
B.A large amount of acorns are always going to save you.
C.Many people around the world believe in superstitions.
D.We should not make decisions because of superstitions.

You use it every day, and there’s one in nearly every home and on every street comer-it’s the toilet. Did you know the average person spends three whole years of his or her life on the toilets? For something so important, we give it very little thought. Well, November 19 is World Toilet Day-a day to bring attention to the toilet.
World Toilet Day reminds us of how lucky we are to have toilets. Many people still don’t have clean toilets, and this causes a number of health problems.
Toilets take many different forms around the world. In the US, you won’t see any squatting (蹲式的) toilets. Most people in the Western world have toilets and running water in their homes.
But, in some places, toilets are outdoors in “outhouses”. Everyone in the neighborhood shares the same outhouse, and going to the toilet becomes a social event. Depending on where you are, public toilets can be very private, with machines playing the sound of running water to mask your noises. Or, public toilets can have no privacy at all-just one big room. Now some modem toilets have electronic keypads, heaters and even play music!
When you use the toilet, you should keep some manners in mind: Flush (冲) the toilet after you have finished. Wash your hands before you leave the restroom. Don’t stand on the toilet when you are using it. If you use public toilets, there may be a line. Don’t cut in line-this is very rude.
8.How long does a person probably spend on toilets in his/her life?

A.Protecting your privacy. B.Making you feel happy.
C.Helping you keep warm. D.Playing music for you to enjoy.
11.Which is a rude thing to do when using the toilet?
A.Waiting in a line if there are many people. B.Forgetting to flush the toilet after using it.
C.Not standing on the toilet when using it. D.Washing hands before leaving the toilet.

The webs that spiders build to catch insects seem weak. However, the strength of spider thread is greater than steel (钢铁). Webs can even stand up to very strong storms.
In each spider web, some threads are sticky, but some are not. When a spider is moving on the web, it will not step on the sticky threads. After a time the silk will lose its stickiness and become unable to catch insects. Then, spiders usually eat their own web.
Now a team of scientists has worked out why the spider web is so strong. It is not just the strength of the thread, but the clever design of the web. “The key to a web’s success is its ability to keep its shape and strength even after some of the threads break,” said scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (麻省理工学院). The scientists found the thread itself has the ability to become softer or harder. So it can hold different types of heavy things.
In tests, scientists used three other strong materials made into the same webs. The spider thread was six times stronger than any other material. More surprisingly, when the scientists took away up to 10 percent of the threads from different places, the web didn’t become any weaker. Actually, it became up to 10 percent stronger.
The spider web’s clever design gives scientists many new ideas. The findings could help design safer buildings and even a new type of strong material. “It’s a really good chance,” said Markus Buehler, a professor at MIT.” It may give us some new ideas for engineering.”
12.What does the underlined word “silk” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
    A.Thread. B.Spider. C.Web. D.Design.
13.According to the passage, the spider web is strong because ________.
    a. the spider’s thread is sticky
    b. the thread has a lot of strength
    c. the web has a clever design
    d. the web can keep the strength forever
    A.ab B.ac C.bc D.bd
14.From the last paragraph, we learn that ________.
A.people can use spider webs to build houses
B.the findings give people new ideas for buildings
C.there are many reasons why the spider web is so strong
D.Professor Buehler will make a new type of material
15.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.A study in MIT. B.How spiders catch insects.
C.The strongest web in the world. D.The secret of spider webs.

Have you ever been in trouble before?” Abby opened her mouth, but no sound came out. At last, her dad had to pay a big fine (罚款) for what Abby did. It cost a lot of money. Loneliness, a natural feeling, is not something most people want to experience. When you feel lonely as a result of missing a loved one or a place, or preparing for a time spent away from your friends and family, here are some suggestions for you to avoid it.
    Focus on your health
Studies have shown that poor sleep, lack of physical activity and unhealthy food can let you feel tired and sad, causing the feeling of loneliness. Try to get eight hours of sleep every night, try to take part in at least 30 minutes of physical activity, and don’t eat junk food. Eating more fruits and vegetables will also help.
Bring an old hobby back to life
It’s much more difficult to feel lonely if you’re actively enjoying an activity, especially one that you are good at. If you’ve got a hobby that you love, try to spare time for your hobby even if you are busy, such as reading, playing a sport, cooking, painting ...
Avoid staying at home all day long
Spending your time in nature will probably improve your feelings and help you get over loneliness. Sunshine makes you feel happier and less focused on your loneliness. You can go hiking, go boating or go on a bike ride if you are not interested in just walking around. You may go for a coffee with your friends or even make big plans so that you have events to look forward to. First, you can make possible activities you might want to take part in, then, spend a few days planning out the event, so that you are fully prepared and stress-free. If possible, include other people in your plan to make your activity more interesting.
All in all, it seems that facing your own loneliness is the first step to avoid loneliness. Do your best to follow the things above. It takes efforts, but it is worth your try.
    23.Why do people feel lonely?
A.Because they live in a poor place.
B.Because they miss their loved people.
C.Because they like to experience that feeling.
D.Because they don’t want to stay with their friends and family.
24.Which of the following can make people feel lonely?
    A.Junk food. B.Enough sleep.
    C.Physical activity. D.Fruits and vegetables.
25.What can you learn from Paragraph 4?
A.It’s impossible to meet friends often.
B.Enjoy the sunshine and you can feel less lonely.
C.Spending time at home alone can help avoid loneliness.
D.Spending time planning the event will make you feel stressed.
26.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Scientific reports about loneliness. B.Tips for choosing a suitable hobby.
C.Suggestions on planning out events. D.Advice on staying away from loneliness.

It’s a pity that deaf people, or those who have hearing problems, can’t enjoy music. But now a vibrating (振动的) suit brings them hope-it can allow them to “feel” music through their skin, rather than hear it.
The special suit is able to translate music into some vibrating pulses (节拍).  And the users can choose different levels. Chase Burton, 33, a deaf film-maker from Texas, US, has been testing out the suit for four years. He understands that a deaf person’s experience with music is very different.
“When I was a kid, I’d lie on the floor so I could feel the vibrations from my brother’s music playing.” Burton told CNN. Now when he wears the vibrating suit, he says the sound hits different parts of his body. “Maybe it will shake me strongly in my knees first. And then I’ll start to feel the vibrations in my back. And then I’ll feel some pulsations.” Burton said.
The designers have been working on helping a large number of deaf people to have a chance of a musical experience. In 2016, some prototype (样品) suits were tested at a Lady Gaga concert in the US. The suit was also tested at a different concert in Las Vegas in 2019. Itwas given to 150 audiences (听众) at the concert, where half the audience members were deaf and half could hear.
At the same time, the company has been improving the technology and planned to put it into the market soon. And the final goal of the company is to make the technology available to all.
“We truly think that anything that has an audio element (元素) can also have a vibrational experience associated with it as well,” the company’s talent and business development director,
    Jordan Richardson, told CNN.
27.How does the vibrating suit help deaf people?
    A.By improving their hearing.
B.By changing the loudness of sound.
C.By turning music into some vibrating pulses.
D.By sending music to their ears easily and quickly.
28.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
    A.The suit. B.The music. C.The concert. D.The technology.
29.Why does the writer mention Burton’s experience?
A.Because he wants to introduce different ways people enjoy music.
B.Because he wants to tell how different it is for a deaf person to enjoy music.
C.Because he wants to show the sadness for not having the technology earlier.
D.Because he wants to call on designers to make better products for deaf people.
30.What’s the best title of this passage?
