    The world’s craziest festivals

Crazy festivals all over the world are out there just waiting to be celebrated. Join Cornelia Kumfert on a trip to the most unusual events taking place around the globe.

    Burning Man Festival

Every year in Nevada (US) there is artwork and curiosities galore to marvel at when the Black Rock Desert changes into a mammoth art exhibition.

In August and September, some 70,00 people come here to celebrate the Burning Man Festival.

    San Diego Comic Con

Surely superheroes don’t queue? Well, at San Diego’s Comic Convention they do. Each July they open their dos to fans of Superman and other comic figures. More than 100,000 annual visitors have paid homage to their mythical heroes.

    Crying Baby Festival, Tokyo

At the Crying Baby Festival in Tokyo (Japan), sumo wrestlers do what they can to bring babies to tears.

Sadists run riot? Certainly not! It’s a 400-year-old tradition based on a Japanese proverb, which says that crying babies grow fastest and parents believe the event brings good health to their children.

Fame and honour await the winner of the Palio contest in Siena (Italy).

If Confucius (孔子) were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He'd need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It's nothing personal. Most Americans don't even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

But this doesn't mean that Americans don't care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy (哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and well.

Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.

As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

    18. The opening paragraph is mainly intended to ________.

    A. provide some key facts about Confucius

    B. show great respect for the ancient thinker

    C. attract the readers' interest in the subject

    D. prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations

    19. We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students ________.

    A. fight for a chance to learn Chinese

    B. take an active part in Chinese competitions

    C. try to get high scores in Chinese exams

    D. have a great interest in studying Chinese

    20. What is the best title for the passage?

    A. Forgotten Wisdom in America       B. Old Thinker with a Big Future

    C. Chinese Culture for Westerners      D. Huge Fans of the Chinese Language

    21. The passage is likely to appear in ________.

    A.a newspaper    B. a history paper

    C. a biography    D. a philosophy textbook

    第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

    从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

How similar are language and music?

Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. ____22____ Both language and music play a huge role in our culture and here are some of their similarities.

Both language and music have a writing system.

In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes to keep a record of music. Musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music. ____23____ By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. We can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago.

    ____24____

You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language he uses. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.

    Both share emotion.

____25____ Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. ____26____ I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics.

    ABoth are various with culture.

BBoth are expressive around the world.

CSimilarly, music is also part of many people’s lives.

DIn contrast, you probably also listen to sad music when you are feeling down.

ESo just as you read English, you can read music.

FHow do you know that I am angry?

GWe use language to express our thoughts.

Adam, 8, and Peter, 10, played at the seaside with their mom every day. Every single day, they would come across an old man who would sit quietly on a chair, watching the waves.

One day, the brothers approached him. For some reason, the old man who always avoided people started a long conversation with the two boys and introduced himself as Walter Bridgeton. After a while, Peter finally asked the question they had been longing to ask: Sir, why do you sit out here every day?

Well, I have been waiting here for my brother, James, for 10 years. We were in the army together and then were sent to different countries. This happened a long time ago. When we last saw each other, we promised to meet right here, where we used to walk with our mother, the old man explained.

How do you know hes still coming? Adam asked.

Thats the thing. I dont know. They gave me his army dog tags(军籍身份牌), but they never found him. He is still missing, he said. The old man patted the boys heads and said, Look after your brother, boys.

The boys enjoyed his company ever since that day, and they were also surprised to know they lived near each other. Deeply moved by Walters story, the brothers decided to use social media to spread it, hoping to find his brother. One day, they went to the beach to tell him about what they did, but didnt find him at his usual spot. Something must have happened. Lets go to his house now, Peter said.
