Let everyone know that I will hold a competition for the most beautiful thing in the world. And the prize will be this crown (王冠).”
Several days later, lots of people came to the competition and showed their things. The queen was not satisfied with what she saw. The advisor suggested, “What you are looking for cannot be brought for you. You must look for it by yourself. What about a journey?”
The queen was interested in the idea, so she started immediately. As she was on top of the hill near her palace, she looked down and suddenly something cried in her heart. “Why have I never found my palace so beautiful?”
The queen spent one year travelling. She saw beauty on the farm, in the forest and even in the stars twinkling (闪烁) at night on her journey. But what was the most beautiful thing? The most basic and powerful way to connect with another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our full attention.
When people are talking, there’s no need to do anything but receive them. Just take them in. Listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Caring is even more important than understanding. It has taken me a long time to believe in the power of saying and meaning “I’m so sorry” when someone is in pain.
One of my friends told me that when she tried to tell her story, people often broke in to tell her that something similar happened to them. For some reason or other, her pain became a story about them. In the end, she stopped talking to most people. It was just too lonely. We connect through listening. When we interrupt someone to let them know that we understand, we move the focus of attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care. Many people with cancer can talk about the relief of having someone just listen.
This simple thing hasn’t been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been taught since I was young. I thought people listened only because they were too shy to speak or did not know the answer. A loving silence often has more power to heal (治愈) and to connect than the kindest words.
14.What is the most important when others are talking?
A.Sharing. B.Listening. C.Understanding. D.Communicating.
15.The writer’s friend stopped talking to most people because ________.
A.she liked listening B.she wanted a better listener
C.she wanted more attention D.she was too shy to talk
16.What is the main message of the story?
A.We should care deeply about our friends. B.It’s hard to walk in other people’s shoes.
C.We should learn to be good listeners. D.We need time to be silent sometimes.
C
读下面的文章,然后回答文章后面的问题,正确的答案写T,错误的答案写F。请把T或F写在答题卡对应题后的横线上。
When I was at school, I had a classmate whose name was Ted. Ted and I were in the same class. He sat next to me. He had serious problems in communicating with others. We always had to guess what he was saying. Besides, most of my classmates did not like to play with him because his hands and shirts were always dirty. I told him several times a day to wash his hands. I tried to let him know the importance of being clean. But he just could not hear. I really disliked him. But I didn’t know how to change him.
One day, our teacher Miss Hsieh walked to Ted. She said nothing. She took Ted to the washroom. Miss Hsieh washed his hands slowly and told Ted that he should keep himself clean. She did that every day for one week. Finally, Ted understood what Miss Hsieh wanted him to do.
Miss Hsieh’s love gave me a good example. When I am doing my job, I always teach my students by showing them the right ways to do things. I always remember to give them more time to learn and to grow up. I’d like to say thanks to Miss Hsieh because I learn a lot from her.
17.Sometimes Ted’s hands and shirts were dirty.
18.The writer and Miss Hsieh told Ted to keep himself clean, but Ted refused to do so.
19.At last, Ted could understand what Miss Hsieh wanted him to do.
20.Miss Hsieh is really a good teacher.
