Look at the picture and discuss the questions below with your partner.(1) What can you see in the picture?
(2) When and where do you think the smaller picture was taken?(3) What were the people in the small picture doing?(4) Do you think it was easy for Shackleton’s rescue team to get to South Georgia Island by this boat?(5) What difficulties or challenges do you think they would have to face?设计意图:引导学生观察图片,描述图片,并学会根据图片传达的信息预测听力内容。Step 3 While-listening1. Listen to one of the team members talk about the rescue plan and their journey. Complete the summary.设计意图:要求学生通过听力获取听力文本的主旨大意及关键信息,并用关键词将大意补充完整。2. Look at the following questions. What can you discover?(1) Why was it necessary for Shackleton to travel to South Georgia island?(2) Why was it important to include a navigator in the team?(3) Why did Shackleton choose the most difficult and unfriendly men to join the rescue mission?(4) Why did Shackleton look extremely old? 3. Look at list below and discuss in groups who you think should join the team. 2. The expressions in the box below may help you with your discussion. 设计意图:引导学生学会客观地分析救援队即将面临的险境及其余船员们在岛上的艰难处境,对救援候选人的资质和特点进行分析,并作出合理的决策。Step 5 SpeakingIn groups of six, role-play an interview to choose the members of the rescue team. One of you role-play Shackleton, and the others are candidates.设计意图:要求学生模拟组织救援队员招募面试会,让学生在语境中运用本课所积累的语言知识,提高学生的口语能力,同时小组活动能让更多的学生参与课堂。Step 6 Assignment1. Write a report of which two sailors your group think Shackleton chose to join the rescue team and why.2. Search for more information about the expedition, especially about the rescue mission.
