Nicholas Sparks is an American author and storyteller whose books have consistently been turned into major Hollywood films. Although not all of his books were sold to Hollywood, all have been The New York Times best-sellers. He has sold over 97 million copies worldwide, with over 65 million of them within the United States alone. He lives with his family in North Carolina. He is also considered to be very generous with his money. In 2011, he created the Nicholas Sparks Foundation to make more opportunities available to children from poor families. He said, “Education is the gift that changed my life.” His foundation, which he started with his wife, creates scholarships for children from low-income families in rural communities. He and his wife also founded the Epiphany School in New Bern, North Carolina. The school’s main goal is to help students practice the values of respect, responsibility, service, and honesty on a daily basis. Sparks has had a very successful career, and he owes that to education. “The education I received growing up prepared me for the world I’d be facing in the future,” the author said. Even though he is worth an estimated 75 million dollars or so, Sparks seems to live the values he presents in his books and films.

The term“Metaverse” is the latest buzzword to capture the tech industry’s imagination. It enjoys such popularity that Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, has announced recently that he’s changing his company’s name to Meta Platforms Inc. in order to engage in the creative new trend.
This might be the biggest thing to happen to the metaverse since the science fiction writer Neal Stephenson invented the term for his 1992 novel Snow Crash. But Zuckerberg and his team are hardly the only tech giants with ideas on how the metaverse should take shape.
What is the metaverse? Zuckerberg has described it as a “virtual environment” you can go inside of rather than just looking at on a screen. Essentially, it’s a world of interconnected virtual communities where people can meet, work and play, by using virtual reality glasses, smartphone or other devices. The metaverse also could be a game-changer for the work-from-home shift during the COVID-19. Instead of only seeing co-workers on a video call, employees could even join them in a virtual office.
However, Zuckerberg’s support for the metaverse contradicts a central belief of its biggest enthusiasts. They regard the metaverse as online culture’s liberation from tech platforms like Facebook that not only take control of people’s accounts, photos and posts, but also trade off what they collected from that data. “We want to be able to move around the Internet with ease, but we also want to be able to move around the Internet in a way we’re not tracked and monitored, ” said Steve Jang, who focuses on crypto-currency technology.
When it comes to Facebook trying to lead the way into a virtual world, there is a growing concern among some people that it could require even more personal data and cause greater risks for information abuse when the company hasn’t fixed those problems in its current platforms.
28.Why is Zuckerberg changing the name of his company?
A.Because he likes to found the metaverse.
B.Because he intends to get involved in the metaverse.
C.Because he wants to draw public attention.
D.Because he plans to quit his present business.
29.What can people do in the Metaverse?
A.Do everything in the real world.
B.Have meetings in the virtual office.
    C.Defeat the pandemic.
    D.See co-workers in person.
30.What can be inferred about the central belief of Metaverse fans?
A.The metaverse should be tracked by tech platforms.
B.Tech platforms should possess and trade users’ data.
    C.Crypto-currency technology should be monitored.
D.Users should have control over their own data.
31.What is some people’s attitude towards Facebook’s attempt to guide the metaverse?
    A.Optimistic.
    B.Neutral.
    C.Worried.
    D.Pessimistic.
    【答案】
    28.B    29.B    30.D    31.C

29.推理判断题。根据第三段“Zuckerberg has described it as a “virtual environment” you can go inside of rather than just looking at on a screen. Bacteria and fungi might call to mind the images of diseases and spoiled food, but they also do a lot of good. The billions of microbes in a handful of dead leaves, for example, act as nature’s recyclers and regenerate nutrients needed for the next generation of plants to grow.
“If it weren’t for bacteria and fungi, we’d be surrounded by masses of dead trees and plant matter. So they actually do a really important job.” said Sydney Glassman, an assistant professor of the University of California, Riverside.
While microbial communities are the engines driving the breakdown of dead plants and animals, little is known about whether they are equipped to handle big changes in climate. In a paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, Glassman and his colleagues examined what happens after microbial communities move into new climate conditions. The study is a first step toward understanding the vulnerability of these ecosystems to climate change.
To mimic a warming planet, the researchers chose five study sites that differ in climate along the San Jacinto Mountains, three of which are in natural reserves operated by the University of California. “While we know that climate influences how fast microbes can recycle plant material, we don’t know how important the particular types of microbes are to recycling,” said Jennifer Martiny, co-author of the study.
To move the microbial communities around, the researchers contained the microbes in nylon containers with tiny holes. These “microbial cages” were filled with dead grass and live microbes sourced from each study site. The containers allowed water and nutrients—but not microbes—to move in and out. The amount of grass decayed by the caged microbes was measured at 6, 12, and 18 months.
The study confirmed previous results that sites with moderate climates saw the most rot and therefore were the most effective places for nutrient recycling. Quite surprisingly, however, the source of the microbes also affected the amount of rot. For example, when moved into the drier bushes, grassland-sourced microbes outperformed the bush residents by as much as 40 percent.
“We expected to see a ‘home-field advantage’ situation where every microbial community decomposed best at its own site, but that wasn’t the case,” Glassman said. “While we know that microbes decompose plants more slowly in hotter and drier environments, we are just now learning that specific microbial communities play an independent role in decomposition, and it is yet to be seen how these communities will be affected by climate change and desertification.”
32.The author regards bacteria and fungi as________.
    A.a double-edged sword B.a natural chemical weapon
C.a requirement for evolution D.a threat to biological diversity
33.Which can explain the underlined word “decayed” in paragraph 5?
    A.Totally absorbed. B.Regularly recycled.
    C.Greedily swallowed. D.Gradually destroyed.
34.What can we infer from the study?
A.Climate affects the speed of microbes’ recycling plant material.
B.Microbes from other sites can perform better than the local ones.
C.Researchers have found out how desertification impacts microbes.
D.Microbes in drier bushes outperformed grassland-sourced microbes.
35.Which is the best title of the passage?
A.A way to avoid dead trees and plant matter
B.Nutrient-recycling microbes may feel the heat
C.“Home-field advantage” doesn’t apply to microbes
D.How climate change improves nature’s ability to recycle

34.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“For example, when moved into the drier bushes, grassland-sourced microbes outperformed the bush residents by as much as 40 percent.(例如,当进入较干燥的灌木丛中时,来自草原的微生物比灌木丛中的微生物高出40%)”可推知,来自其他地区的微生物可能会比某地土生土长的微生物有更高的降解能力,即表现可能会更为突出。故选B。
35.主旨大意题。根据第三段“The study is a first step toward understanding the vulnerability of these ecosystems to climate change.(这项研究是了解这些生态系统对气候变化的脆弱性的第一步)”以及倒数第二段“The study confirmed previous results that sites with moderate climates saw the most rot and therefore were the most effective places for nutrient recycling.(这项研究证实了先前的结果,即气候温和的地区腐烂最严重,因此是最有效的养分回收场所)”以及文章内容可知,该研究主要探讨的是气候对微生物的影响,“促使营养物质循环的微生物可能感知温度变化”可以作为文章标题。故选B。

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
In fact, this isn’t a new phenomenon. After all, people have complained about  “kids  these  days”  for  decades. But is there really any truth in the idea that millennials (千禧一代) and Gen Z are weaker than Boomers or Gen X?  People have complained about younger generations for thousands of years. _______36_______.“The tendency for adults to look down upon the character of youth has been happening for centuries,” says Peter O’ Connor, a professor of management.
He points out the fixed concept remains alive and well, with research showing thousands  of Americans believe that “kids these days” lack positive qualities that participants associate with older generations. _____37_____.  The researchers argued that this was because we project our current selves onto our past selves.
By doing this, older people are unconsciously comparing who they are today to today’s young people, giving an impression that today’s youth is somehow on the decline, no matter which times we’re living in. ______38______.    The truth is that older generations have been accusing  the young of being lazy and self-obsessed for centuries.____39____. Jason Dorsey, president of the Center for Generational Kinetics, believes that there is a way around this—but that general context is key to debunking the persisting weakness myth.
“It’s awareness of what these different generations have gone through, why they are the way they are.” he says.
“___40___, which simply does not exist right now. Instead of having frank conversations across generations, we  always say that younger people are snowflakes and older people are dinosaurs. But the truth is that we’re all human.” he adds.
A.It is actually not the truth
B.We were also judged by the former generations
C.And the old generations are usually too stubborn to change themselves
D.But this isn’t because the youths of today actually do lack these qualities
E.The best way to get the old to stop blaming the young is to create a dialogue
F.We seem almost forced to judge people who grew up in a different time to us
G.In fact, looking down on the generation that comes after you could simply be human nature

    The Right Thing
My mother worked as a housekeeper and she was often given used toys as well as many other goodies by her clients. My elder sister and I always loved sharing the recycled books and board games brought home by my beloved mom, which we considered great gifts life presented us.
The long-awaited Christmas finally approached. One December day, an old model toy car arrived in the load of goods. It was as long as my forearm and took both hands to lift. My sister didn’t want it, so it was all mine. I immediately set down to wiping it clean and polishing it to a bright candy-apple red. It turned to be a thing of beauty, and I became overjoyed at possessing it. My elder sister was amazed at the newly-polished, refreshing toy car, with a hint of regret and envy in her eyes.
As was planned, our relatives from France came to visit us that Christmas. It was a time when the family bond got strengthened. I shared the prized toy car with Alex, my young French cousin. Eyes glued to it, he fell in love with the wonderful, shiny red automobile the instant he saw it. It was a rare moment to see him feeling so relieved and happy. He’d been unlucky so far in life, suffering severe, life-threatening illnesses as a child, leaving him mentally and physically stuck and the family starved of cash. Of course, such lovely toys like my dear model car were unreachable dreams for him.
Seeing Alex’s consuming thrill brought by the red car, I was seized by immense joy as well. But contrary to Alex’s excitement, a voice inside me constantly reminded, “Watch out! He’d keep it for himself.”, which got me faintly worried. I followed my cousin for fear of something.
My mother also noticed Alex’s fondness for the car. Approaching me, she asked gently in a low voice, “Would you like to give it to Alex?”

    【参考范文】
Giving or keeping? I struggled with myself. Giving it? Hardly could I imagine life without the model car! After all, it was my most precious treasure, which I had been proud of. My heart kept aching at the prospect of giving it away. Nope! I shook my head determinedly. Glancing at my mother’s expectant eyes, I couldn’t help sobbing. Keeping it? Definitely, it would otherwise upset Alex. Torn between the two tough choices, I was totally at a loss. Nevertheless, deep down, I could feel my affection to Alex. Yep! I resolved to do the right thing.
In the moment of parting, my model car went with Alex. Though I was crushed to see it go, my heart sang when I saw his beaming face as he tightly clutched it. Seeing the thumbs-up from my mother and sister, I did swell with relief, pride and joy, for I knew it was not a gift; to some extent, it was our concern and love for him. Plus, sharing the model car also strengthened our bond, which, I was fully convinced, would always uplift him. An effort made for the happiness of others lifted us above ourselves as well.
