On Wednesday a powerful earthquake hit Amatrice that was at the epicenter(震中), which is the point in the earth’s surface directly above where the earthquake happens. The town’s clock tower was the only building still standing. Italy’s prime minister said the earthquake had killed at least 120 people, and warned that the number might increase. There were several villages that were affected in farther mountainous areas. The earthquake was also felt as far away as Rome, 100 miles from the epicenter.
Earthquakes can’t be predicted. There are warning systems that can save some lives, but only under certain conditions. Unlike a tomnado warning where radar can see it and issue a warning before it, an earthquake warning happens when the earth is already shaking. We don’t have a system that can predict when the earth is going to shake. Our warning system is based on the fact that the earth is already shaking. The warning depends on how far you are from the earthquake epicenter. If you’re at an earthquake epicenter, you’re going to get no warning. If you’re far away from the epicenter, we can give you some time to prepare.
Another condition is how close the sensor is to the epicenter. If the sensor is 10 miles away from the epicenter, it takes five seconds to get to that sensor. So, the more sensors we get, the more time we’ll get as well. If you get 10 seconds notice of an earthquake that’s happening, especially a big one, you can open up the lifts on the nearest floor. You can also stop all the things that are moving before the shaking gets there. If you’re 30 miles away, your warning could be 15 seconds. It is 15 seconds that can save your life.
    4. What can be learned from the first paragraph?
    A. The earthquake happened on Monday.
    B. The earthquake destroyed all the buildings.
    C. Fewer than 120 people lost their lives.
    D. Rome is about 100 miles away from Amatrice.
    5. What can we say about the earthquake warning?
    A. It can always give us time to prepare.
    B. It is different from the tornado warning.
    C. It can tell us how to prepare for the earthquake.
    D. It can predict when earthquakes will happen.
    6. How far might you be from the epicenter with 10 seconds notice of an earthquake?
    A. 5 miles. B. 10 miles. C. 20 miles. D. 30 miles.
    7. What is the best title of the passage?
    A. A Powerful Earthquake B. The Introduction of the Earthquake Warning
    C. Earthquakes and Tornados D. How the Earthquake Happens
D 5. B 6. C 7. B

根据最后一段中“If the sensor is 10 miles away from the epicenter, it takes five seconds to get to that sensor.(如果传感器离震中有10英里远,则需要5秒钟才能到达该传感器)”可知,地震发生后10秒内通知,那么你离震中有20英里。
根据第二段中“Earthquakes can’t be predicted. There are warning systems that can save some lives, but only under certain conditions.(地震是无法预测的。有一些预警系统可以拯救一些生命,但只在某些条件下)”结合文章以阿马特里切地震为引入,介绍了地震预警系统,比较了地震预警系统与龙卷风预警的不同之处以及地震预警系统进行预测所需的一些条件。故B选项“地震预警介绍”最符合文章标题。故选B。

A 99-year-old Australian swimmer appears to have broken a world record for his age group in the 50m freestyle. The likely new world record holder, George Corones, clocked 56. 12 seconds at an official event in Queensland—a new benchmark for the 100 — 104 age category. He faded the previous record of 1:31. 19, which was set by British swimmer John Harrison in 2014, by 35 seconds. It will now be affirmed by the sport’s governing body.
Corones, who is quailed for the record because he turns 100 in April, said he was “quite delighted” and “over the world” by the result. He said he had been overwhelmed by the “roaring” crowd on the Gold Coast on Wednesday. The event, in which he was the only entrant, had been specially staged for him to challenge the record.
Corones was a keen swimmer in his youth but only began to learn swimming again at the age of 80. He gave it up at the beginning of the World War Ⅱ, and he didn’t think he would have a swim of any description until he retired. Then he started swimming again for exercise.
Racing undeniably challenged him physically, but it was manageable with preparation. On average he swims three times a week, and also fits in gym sessions. “At this age it takes a while to get going...you get tired much more easily, but if you do it properly, the rewards are astronomical,” he said.
Corones will challenge the 100m freestyle record on Saturday night, believing he can beat the current mark of 03:23. 10, which was also set by Harrison.
“I’m not a young man by any means, but I am really looking forward to it and confident I can do it very well, ” he said
    8. What is the author’s purpose of writing Paragraph 1?
    A. To show who John Harrison is. B. To explain the reason for writing the text.
    C. To emphasize the importance of age. D. To introduce the topic of the text.
    9. What does the underlined word “astronomical” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Original. B. Huge. C. Brief. D. Illegal.
    10. What does Corones plan to do next?
    A. Challenge Harrison again. B. Prepare for his 100th birthday party.
    C. Celebrate his success. D. Give up challenging.
    11. What does the author tell us by telling Corones’s story?
    A. It’s never too late to learn. B. He who laughs last laughs best.
    C. One good turn deserves another. D. Laziness in youth spells regret in old age.
D 9. B 10. A 11. A

The likely new world record holder, George Corones, clocked 56. 12 seconds at an official event in Queensland—a new benchmark for the 100 — 104 age category. He faded the previous record of 1:31. 19, which was set by British swimmer John Harrison in 2014, by 35 seconds. It will now be affirmed by the sport’s governing body.(一位99岁的澳大利亚游泳运动员似乎打破了他所在年龄组的50米自由泳世界纪录。
根据第四段““At this age it takes a while to get going... you get exhausted much more easily, but if you do it properly, the rewards are astronomical,” he said.(他说:“在这个年龄,你需要一段时间才能开始……你更容易筋疲力尽,但如果你做得好,回报将是astronomical。”)”,可知在这个年龄,如果你做得好,回报将是巨大的,B选项Huge (巨大的) 符合题意。故选B。
    【10题详解】

As we all know, children are fast learners when learning a second language. However, adults can study a second language as fast as children, a new study reports. Adults can develop the increased neural (神经的)connections with language study that can avoid dementia(痴呆)by four years, as well as make traveling a lot easier.
In an examination of Spanish second-language learners, the researchers found that after simplest training, the brain activity between sentences that relied on grammatical features unique to each language was similar to that of native speakers. “I think it is the reason why people think university foreign language teaching is good. It shows that, even with limited time in the college classroom, learning can happen quite quickly and well, ”said professor Alison Gabriele, the co-author of the paper.
Beyond that, it gives parents more reasons to study a second language as part of a family effort. Further research has shown that learning a language as a family effort improves everyone’s abilities and gives opportunities for learning something that are mostly absent from classroom settings. National Geographic reports in an interview with Christine Jernigan, author of Family Language Learning: Learn Another Language that as for immersion(沉浸)in language study, practicing a second language with people is the most important part, and who talks to each other more than a family? Language learners need to be brave. Besides, they should ready themselves for making mistakes and receive others’ advice.
Most people will be far more comfortable making mistakes around family members than in a classroom setting. Furthermore, any home activity, whether that’s gardening, playing in the yard, watching movies, going shopping, cleaning, or cooking a meal, becomes an opportunity for language learning. Jernigan suggests preparing vocabulary before an activity and using it as short homework. Jernigan suggests using subtitles(字幕)too, so you can see which words are being used.
    12. What does the new study in Paragraph 1 find?
    A. Kids often travel a lot on their own.
    B. Adults have learnt a second language better than kids.
    C. Adults can study a second language as quickly as kids.
    D. Kids are likely to develop the increased neural connections.
    13. What does Alison Gabriele think of learning a language in the college classroom?
    A. It is successful. B. It is challenging.
    C. It is disappointing. D. It is boring.
    14. What is the advantage of learning a language as a family effort?
    A. Helping kids form good learning habits.
B Making parents control kids easily.
    C. Keeping kids focusing on the classroom.
    D. Having more chances to learn in different situations.
    15. What should language learners do according to the text?
    A. Try to take others’ advice less.
    B. Fit in with new learning environment.
    C. Be willing to accept others’ comments.
    D. Spend much time doing housework.
C 13. A 14. D 15. C

根据上文“How do you wake up in the morning? Do you set an alarm on your phone or clock that sounds like this: beep beep beep?(你早上是怎么醒来的?你是否在手机或闹钟上设置了“哔哔哔”这样的闹钟?)”以及后文“Sleep inertia is another term for grogginess, which means a person has a heavy feeling when waking up, and has trouble getting moving again after sleeping.(睡眠惯性是昏昏沉沉的另一种说法,意思是一个人醒来时感觉很沉重,入睡后很难再行动起来)”可知,本句是在说明闹钟吵醒会导致醒来昏沉的感觉。
根据后文“A recent study says yes. The answer is music. Researchers say alarms that have a melody-like the beginning of this song-can help people feel fresher in the morning.(最近的一项研究给出了肯定的答案。答案是音乐。研究人员说,有旋律的闹钟——就像这首歌的开头——可以帮助人们在早上感觉更清新)”可知,后文提到了给出了答案,可知本句为针对上文被闹钟吵醒设问句,故B选项“那么有没有更好的方法来做到这一点呢?”符合语境,故选B。

The following aspects could best illustrate the advantages of Internet. Resources are rich on the Internet where we can gain plenty of the knowledge. In addition, Internet offers us a convenient way to communicate with each other.
The Internet also has its disadvantages, just as a coin has two sides. Firstly, some columns on the Internet may contain some unhealthy content that have a negative influence on us. Secondly, some students may be addicted to online games while ignoring their study.
In my opinion, we need to make good use of the Internet and should not depend on it too much.

Sadie looked out of the window and sighed as she thought about another long, boring day of summer. She wondered what all of her friends from school were doing on their summer vacations. It had to be a lot better than looking out of a window. Sadie thought about the fun she had last summer when she and her best friend Allison went to the beach. But they wouldn’t be going to the beach together this summer because Allison had moved to a different city.
Suddenly, Sadie had an idea. She could call her friend Wendy, who always had funny ideas. Sadie raced to the living room, picked up the phone, and called Wendy. She sighed more deeply as the phone rang and rang. Then Sadie seated herself on the sofa, picked up the television remote, and put it down again. Then she went to her room and found the list of phone numbers of her good friends from school. In the living room, she called almost each of them, but no one was at home.
After hanging up the phone, Sadie wandered into the kitchen and sat down at the table, watching her mom do the cleaning. “Mom, I don’t have anyone to hang out with because my friends from school aren’t home and Allison moved away, ” said Sadie. “Honey, there are many things you can do by yourself, like playing your guitar or having a walk in the garden.” said Mom.
“I don’t want to do those things by myself.” “Sometimes, it is nice to do things by yourself,” said Mom. “I like seeing my friends, but I also like doing things alone like taking a walk by myself or finding a quiet place to read. Why not have a try?”
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为100左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

    【答案】参考范文:
Sadie thought about her mom’s words and returned to her room. Considering for a while, she took the story she started last month from her desk drawer and began to write. Some scenes she took down were so interesting that she laughed out loud. When she stopped and looked at the clock, she found she had been writing for 30 minutes. Sadie decided to go outside for a breath of fresh air. With her mom’s permission, she got on her bike and rode slowly down the sidewalk. It felt great! Much to her surprise, scenery along the path was breathtaking, which used to escape her notice when she hung out with friends.
As she rode back home, Sadie ran toward her mom excitedly. “Did you find someone to play with " outside?” Mom asked. “No, I took your advice. I rode my bike by myself. ”“Wendy called back while you were outside, asking you to go swimming tonight. You will have a happy evening, ”Sadie’s mom said. “Well, I think I will finish my story instead. I can go swimming with her another day, ”Sadie said with a wink. “And it’s indeed very different and surprising to do things alone. ”
