Growing up in a village in eastern Nepal’s Bhojpur Mountains, Mira Rai had dreams that went far beyond the traditional expectations for Nepali women. The eldest daughter of five children, she was expected to fetch water, tend crops and livestock, and help out at home. By age 12, she no longer regularly attended school, and instead carried heavy bags of rice up and down steep trails — often barefoot — to trade at the market. It was hard work, but great training for a future trail runner.
“As a girl,” Rai recalls, “I would constantly be told to know my place, lower my voice,
and act in a certain manner. For me, breaking free from these traditions itself was a big dream.”
Several years ago, Rai’s dream became reality. She was running outside Kathmandu
when two male trail runners invited her to enter her first trail race, the Kathmandu West Valley Rim 50K. She had never run 50 kilometers before, had no special equipment or
training for such a distance, and was also the only woman in the competition. But despite all
difficulties, she beat everyone — even the men. From there, a community of runners came together to give her a chance to compete in international trail running competitions.
Today, the running world recognizes Rai as a high-altitude trail racing talent. Now she is

on a mission to help both women and men of Nepal through sports. Rai believes her work to empower others has just begun. “We have realized that Nepal has tremendous potential to develop competitive athletes,” she says. Rai is blazing a trail, not just in terms of being able to speak nationally on gender equality, but also by getting young people into running.
24. What can we learn about Mira Rai?
A. She won her first victory easily. B. She gave up chasing her dream.
C. She dropped out of school at 12. D. She benefited from her early life.
25. What was other runners’ attitude toward Mira Rai?

C. She is getting professional training. D. She is setting new records in running.
27. What is the best title of the passage?
A. A Defining Moment in Life B. A Fate-changing Trail Race
C. A Fighter for Women’s Rights D. A Dream-pursuing Sky Runner

“A lot of the time when climate change is discussed in mainstream media, people are asking ‘can humans overcome this?’, or ‘what technology can solve this?’. It’s high time we recognized that animals also have to adapt to various changes. We know some animals change their skin colors to escape from natural enemies or due to environment pollution,” says Ryding. “The climate change that we have created is putting a lot of pressure on them,
and some species try to adapt by shapeshifting (变形). ”
Strong shapeshifting has particularly been reported in birds. Several species of Australian parrot have shown, on average, a 4%—10% increase in beak (鸟喙) size since
1871, and this is positively linked with the summer temperature each year. North American
dark-eyed juncos, a type of small songbird, had a link between increased beak size and short-term temperature extremes in cold environments. There have also been reported changes in mammalian species. Researchers have reported tail length increases in wood mice
and leg size increases in masked shrews (地鼠).
“The increases in some body parts size we see so far are quite small—less than 10%—so
the changes are unlikely to be immediately noticeable,” says Ryding. “However, some body parts such as ears are predicted to increase.”
Ryding intends to investigate shapeshifting in Australian birds firsthand by 3D scanning
museum bird specimens from the past 100 years. It will give her team a better understanding of which birds are changing their body parts and why. “Shapeshifting does not mean that animals are coping with climate change and that all is ‘fine’,” says Ryding. “It just means they are adapting to survive it—but we’re not sure what the other ecological consequences of these changes are, or indeed that all species are capable of changing and surviving.”
28. What may cause animals’ shapeshifting according to Ryding?
A. Human hunting. B. Climate change.
C. Natural enemies. D. Polluted surroundings.
29. What method does the author mainly use to develop paragraph 2?
A. Giving examples. B. Cause-effect analysis.
C. Making comparison. D. Process analysis.
高二月考二英语 4 / 8
30. What can we know from Ryding’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Animals can well adapt to changes and survive.
B. Influence of animals’ shapeshifting is uncertain.
C. Rdying will research into bird museums in Australia.
D. All adaptations of animals to climate change are beneficial.
31. In which section of a newspaper can we find the text?
A. Technology. B. Health care. C. Environment. D. Education.
D
Scientists near San Francisco work to identify a type of endangered fish using a tool that was originally made for treating cancer.
Currently, CRISPR is used to change the genetic material in specific cells. By changing
the structure of immune cells, it helps recognize and fight cancer. The same technology is now used in a special machine called Sherlock, which, of course, is named after the famous investigator Sherlock Holmes. They do not, however, use Sherlock to change fish cells.
Instead, the ocean researchers catch the fish, collect a small amount of mucus (黏液) and then
test the cells to find the genetic makeup of the fish. It can be done in about 30 minutes. In the past, the researchers would have to wait weeks or months to get test results.
The researchers have found that the technology is extremely helpful when looking at
different species of Chinook salmon, because they look nearly the same. However, some of them are endangered, and the scientists need to keep track of them.
In the past, the scientists would catch the Chinook salmon and measure them to tell them
apart. “It’s not very accurate,” said Andrea Schreier, an associate professor at the University of California in Davis. Now she is working on the salmon. Schreier said when they catch the fish, the Sherlock machine can quickly tell them if they have one of the special salmon. It’s important because it allows the scientists to do things that will help the endangered salmon live longer. For example, they can catch them in lakes far away from the coast and take them by truck to the San Francisco Bay. In the past, the fish might have tried to make it to the Bay by swimming in rivers. However, due to climate change, the river water is sometimes too warm for the fish to make the trip safely.
Schreier said she feels good about the project because she likes being able to assist with
conservation. “I really want to work to maintain our ecosystems and our native populations as much as possible, given all of the pressures that we humans place on them through our different activities.”
32. Which of the following best describe the technology?
A. Immature. B. Efficient. C. Inaccurate. D. Economical.
33. What do the new technology and the traditional way have in common?
A. They test the fish mucus to tell them apart.
B. They are carried out by researchers in the lab.
C. They help researchers tell different salmons apart.
D. They originally aimed at detecting cancer.
34. What can be inferred about the Chinook salmons?
A. They will soon die out. B. They are of the same size.
C. They are now well protected. D. They are used to cool water.
35. What do we know about Andrea Schreier from the text?
高二月考二英语 5 / 8
A. She thinks humans are greatly pressured.
B. She can now spend less time on her work.
C. She is rather devoted to the conservation.

书面表达:
Should Universities Limit the Number of Visitors?
Nowadays, it is becoming increasingly popular for tourists to visit famous universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University during the holidays. However, some universities get down to limiting the number of visitors, which has caused heated arguments in China.
Most are in favor of this measure, saying that not only can it help maintain the normal
order in universities, but also it can guarantee the safety of students to the greatest extent. However, just as every coin has two sides, others hold the opposite view. Those who think differently hold the view that limiting the number of visitors is not conducive to the promotion of the university’s popularity. What makes things even worse is that this measure definitely violates the rights of common citizens to admire the first-class universities.
From my perspective, the number of tourists should be limited. There will be
undoubtedly a negative impact on the students if there are too many tourists wandering through the campus. Most importantly, universities are designed to provide education rather than tourism service.

Text 2
M: I’m slightly nervous about driving my car to the city in the snow. Maybe we should take the bus instead.

M: All right.

W: All I have are work clothes. It’s getting hotter and hotter now, and I need new skirts and shorts!

W: Perfect!
Text 4
M: I’ve decided I’m going to study art at university. I want to draw the pictures in children’s books.

like she did, but I would rather study history.
Text 5
W: Dennis, can you turn off the light when you leave home, please? The price of electricity has been crazy recently. We’re saving for our family trip.
M: Sorry, Mom. I just forgot. I’ll keep it in mind next time.
Text 6
W: What have you got for your lunch?
M: Oh, nothing special. Just the same old egg sandwiches.
W: Why do you always have them?
M: I suppose it’s just my habit. I’ve always got eggs in the fridge. Sandwiches are easy to make. But to be honest, I am quite bored of eating them every day!
W: Interesting. Shall we forget the sandwiches today and have lunch in a local restaurant?
M: I suppose we could.
W: Come on, I’m hungry. We could try out that new place on the main street near our office. I fancy beef noodles.
M: Sure, whatever you say. You’re in charge of the office, and I like the idea of no
sandwiches anyway! I’ll try chicken and rice today!

M: I’ve lived in this town forever. I can’t believe I’m moving away tomorrow.
W: I know. Everyone on our soccer team thought you wouldn’t leave for another half year. What did your classmates and teachers at your school say about your move?
M: They were surprised, too. I wish my mom could have waited until I graduated from high
school to get a new job. That’s the only reason we have to move across the country.
W: You only have one year of high school left. Have you seen your new house?
M: Not yet, but my parents are so proud of it. They keep saying that my sister and I will love it. But I feel so nervous now. I’ve never thought of the move, and I love this town.
W: I’m sorry, Nick. But look on the bright side, you’ll have a new experience. Plus, you can
visit us every holiday.

高二月考二英语 7 / 8
M: Really?
W: Yes. I learned about it while I was there. I’m hoping to raise enough money through a charity marathon to help out.
M: Can you tell me more about the project?
W: Well, where my family live, in Ghior, they have a real problem with lightning storms.
M: Really?
W: Yes. In 2018, around 360 people were killed by lightning, more than those who were killed by either floods or earthquakes!
M: Wow. Why is that happening?
W: It’s partly caused by the local weather conditions. Hot air from the Bay of Bengal meets
cold air from the Himalayas, which creates many storms. But it’s becoming worse due to climate change.
Text 9
M: Welcome to Fitness Direct. I am your personal trainer for today. How are you feeling?

M: OK, that sounds reasonable. May I ask your current weight?
W: Yes, I am 50 kilos now.
M: How much exercise do you currently do per week on average?
W: Around three hours. I go swimming on Tuesdays, I dance on Wednesdays, and on Sunday mornings I play badminton.
M: That’s excellent. May I ask you about your diet?
W: Well, I try to be healthy, but I like pizza and cakes, so I don’t always eat well.
M: What is your job? Are you tied down to a desk most of the day?
W: Sadly yes, I’m an office girl.
M: Well, you have given me some great information, so I can come up with a weekly timetable for you.
W: Great. What shall we begin with first?
M: Right now. I’d like you to warm up with a 10-minute jog. OK?
W: Sure.

W: Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the Museum of Fine Arts. This museum houses some of the greatest works of art to be found in the entire world. There are priceless collections of paintings, coins and other items dating from 3000 BC to the present day. There are four separate parts—the Gallery of Ancient Treasures, the Gallery of Classic Art, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Gallery of Sculpture. You should start your tour in the Gallery of Sculpture. I particularly recommend that you visit the Gallery of Modern Art, because at the moment, there is a visiting collection of French modern art. The paintings on display there are nothing short of wonderful. I promise you won’t be disappointed. To get the most out of your museum tour, you can buy an audio guide from the gift shop. So, ladies and gentlemen, the time now is 11:00 a.m. I suggest we all meet in the hall four hours later. Do you have any questions? No? OK, enjoy your visit and I will see you later.
