In the digital age, chances are arising for everyone. However , only those putting plans into action can stay ahead. Alexandr Wang is one such example.
Los Alamos National Laboratory was where Alexandr spent his childhood. Both his parents were physicists there. Alexandr, from a young age, had a sharp mind. As a kid, he was regarded as a math wizard(奇才) and competed in national math and computer competitions. Finishing high school,

Alexandr entered Massachusettes Institute of Technology where machine learning and AI amazed him. He saw the potential( 潜力)of AI, and was excited about how it could change the world. But it wasn't making a real effect. His goal to set up a company in that field was seeded then.
At 17, he got the role of tech lead at Quora where he met Lucy Guo at Quora, with whom Alexandr founded Scale AI, which turned out to be a considerable success. In fact, at that time, there were various opportunities in the tech world. It was hard to decide which road they should go down. "If you aren't willing to take a risk now, then when?" Then he and his team decided to go with "imagery, computer vision and other kinds of sensor data". And that is what made the company's profits rise quickly. Scale AI has a net worth of about $7.3 billion at present, with Alexandr being the world's youngest self-made billionaire.
When asked lessons he'd like to share with founders, Alexandr stated there are a number of things. "The top one is always doing things that go with your values and how you want to build a company at the beginning. When you talk to investors( 投资者),they' ll contribute advice that may go against your goal. Figure out your focus and what gets you started."
    24. What inspired Alexandr to build Scale AI?
    A. The work at Quora. B. Hi1s expenences at un1vers1ty.
    C. The influence of his parents. D. His gift for math and computer.
    25. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3?
    A. The key to the success of Scale AL B. Challenges of Alexandr's career.
    C. Alexandr's greatest achievements. D. The process of founding Scale AI.
    26. Which of the following can best describe Alexandr?

    A. Clever and generous.
    C. Adaptive and sociable.
    27. What did Alexandr advise founders to do?
    A. Stick to one particular direction.
    C. Remain true to the original intention.
    B. Courageous and outgoing
    D. Adventurous and determined.

    B. Find a friend to start a company.
    D. Keep an open mind on suggestions.

Earthquakes are a natural disaster-except when they're man-made. The oil and gas industry has forcefully used the technique known as hydraulic fracturing(水力压裂法)to destroy sub-surface rock and let off the oil and gas hiding there. But the process results in large amounts of chemical-filled waste water. Horizontal drilling ( 水 平钻 孔)for oil can also produce large amounts of natural, unwanted salt water. The industry deals with this waste water by pumping it into deep wells.
On Monday, the US Geological Survey published for the first time an earthquake disaster map covering both natural and quakes. The map and a report show that parts of the central United States now face a ground-shaking disaster equal to the famously unstable terrain(不稳定地形) of California.

Some 7 million people live in places easily attacked by these man-made quakes, the USGS said The list of places at highest risk of man-made earthquakes includes Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Ohio and Alabama. Most of these earthquakes are relatively small,
in the range of magnitude( 震 级 )3, but some have been more powerful, including a magnitude 5.6
earthquake in 2011 in Oklahoma that was connected to waste water filling.
Scientists said they do not know if there is an upper limit on the magnitude of man-made earthquakes; this is an area of active research. Oklahoma has had prehistoric earthquakes as powerful as magnitude 7.
It's not clear whether this new research will change industry practices, or even whether it will surprise anyone in the areas of newly supposed danger. In Oklahoma, for example, the natural rate of earthquakes is only one or two a year, but there have been hundreds since hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, with the waste water filling, became common in the last ten years.
    28. What human activities can probably cause earthquakes?

    A. Producing waste water in the factories.
    C. Piping waste water into rivers and oceans.
    B. Digging deep wells in those poor areas.
    D. Mining and drilling the earth for oil and gas.

    29. What does the underlined word "induced" in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Man-made. B. Reduced. C. Newly-built. D. Controlled.
    30. How much magnitude can man-made earthquakes reach?
    A. It's been said as small as magnitude 3. B. It has been said as high as magnitude 7.
    C. It's being studied without a final conclusion. D. It has risen by an average of magnitude 5. 6.
    31. How did the author feel towards the present situation?

    A. Shocked. B. Concerned. C. Annoyed. D
    D. Frightened.

Western fashion brands ( 时尚 品牌)have a design problem with Chinese characters, or hanzi.
They still disappoint Chinese customers with the way they use Chinese writing on their products.
The most common mistakes suggest there is not enough research and cultural understanding. For example, a Burberry scarf was embroidered(刺绣)with the Chinese character fu upright instead of upside down, as it's traditionally shown in China. Even the fonts(字体)are a problem. In May, Dior, one of the world's leading fashion brands, started a special service for customers to have their Chinese
names embroidered on Book Tote handbags. When some Chinese stars carrying the customized handbags were shown on social media, the Chinese fashion community expressed the 订disappointment. Many believed the font on Dior's handbags showed little artistic taste and looked cheap.
It's not all disappointment, though. Experimentation and careful research have brought positive results for brands coming close to hanzi. Consider the logo(标志)created for Prada Rong Zhai, an old

building repaired and owned by the Prada Group in Shanghai. The Rong Zhai type was created by 2x4 (a New York-based design studio) by using the Roman letters in the original Prada logo to create the Chinese characters. The result is a unique logo that suggests both lettered strictness and a classic Prada style. The type's West-meet-East mix won broad admiration among Chinese customers online.
One way to keep up to date is to team up with creatives and artists of the country to create designs that can be more acceptable to Chinese customers. Joining forces with local partners can also avoid misunderstandings that happen when a design team doesn't know Chinese culture very well.
    32. What were the Chinese fashion community disappointed at?
    A. The design's old-fashion. B. The desiign's higher price.
    C. The design's common font. D.The design's ugly brand name.
    33. What is special about the logo of Prada Rong Zhai?
    A. It brings together Western and Chinese writing.
    B. It is created to introduce Chinese hanzi culture.
    C. It was designed by online supporters of the company.
    D. It invited a famous Chinese star to write the characters.
    34. What does the author expect Western designers to do?
    A. Try to create more fashionable fonts. B. Show more hanzi in Western culture.
    C. Find the causes of cultural differences. D. Work together with Chinese designers.
    35. What does the text mainly want to tell us?
    A. International brands spreading Chinese culture.
    B. Western fashion's struggle with Chinese writing.
    C. Western designers'research on Chinese characters.
    D. The collllection between Chinese customers and hanzi.
    第二节(共 5 小题,每 小题 2.5 分, 满分 12.5 分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
To develop one's taste in English, the most effective way is to read English books extensively lQ As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my experience.
It is recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it. It's not the vocabulary that troubled me, but rather the way Austen organizes sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed too far to me at that time. My lost interest and love was much recovered after reading Hemingway's novel A Farewell to Arms with no long and difficult sentences. J] So my first suggestion is: You'd better choose contemporary(当代的)novels instead of classical ones.
However, reading novels is not the only way to improve your English. English essay(s 散文)can
at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand

Russell's work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the unique sense of humor. His simple language enables his philosophy( 哲 理 )within the reach of ordinary people. 3_2
Never follow others'opinions blindly, however famous or influential the person might be. We
should be open to various ideas, but always think and determine for ourselves. ±_Q With that in mind, we are sure to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.
    A. And I particularly liked his brief and lively style.
    B. They are the unique characteristics of Russell's works.
    C. Here comes my second suggestion: Essays are necessary.
    D. As a saying goes, one man's meat is another man's poison.
    E. Choose some simple forms of English novels to start with.
    F. My first English novel was Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
    G. However, one may be at a loss to choose suitable books, especially as a beginner.

Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined(使明确)more by the detours(绕行路) in life than by the narrow road toward goals. I like this description. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words.
For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents'home in Boise in nine hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hate confinement(限制)and have strong opinions about everything.
Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired.
But then Banner, our lam(b 小羊芜)was born. He was rejected(抛弃)by his mama days before
our planned trip to Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made the decision for me.
That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism(乐观精神)to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him and...
