During ancient times, children didn't have smart phone, iPad or computer to have fun. Instead, they came up with interesting games to play in their childhood. Their life is really colorful and interesting. Let's take a look.
Kicking stone ball
During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), kicking a stone ball around was a popular sport in the northern part of China, and it was often played in winter to keep warm. Stones were made into small balls and kicked along with feet.
In 1999, the sport was included in the competition item in the 6th National Ethnic Group Traditional Sports Meeting held in Beijing.
Hide-and-seek
Hide-and-seek is a traditional game for children in China, popular around the nation. It appeared in the Tang Dynasty. There are two ways to play: covering a child's eyes while other kids run around to tease(戏弄)him or, more commonly, the partners hide and one child must try to find them.
Watching shadow play
The closest thing to watching a film or television during ancient times was watching a shadow play(皮影戏). People control puppets behind the screen while singing with music to tell a story. It was first played in Shaanxi and was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产)in 2006.
Setting off firecrackers
Firecrackers have a history of more than 2,000 years. It is said that people burnt bamboo joints(竹节) to make it blast(爆炸) to drive away the beast named Nian in ancient China. Firecrackers are still set off during the Spring Festival to symbolize(象征) hope and luck. Liling and Liuyang of Hunan province are famous for producing fireworks.

On Dec. 9,2021, three Chinese astronauts, Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu, gave a science lesson 400 kilometers above Earth! Let's take a look.
Use it or lose it
The human body grows with the pull of Earth's gravity(重力). But in space, our bones(骨头) and muscles (肌肉) don't need to support our body's weight. This will cause bone and muscle loss. That is dangerous for astronauts because they will be too weak to work.
Astronauts have different ways to prevent this. Zhai introduced a special uniform. It’s called a “penguin suit”. There are many elastic bands(弹力带) inside the suit. Wearing it, astronauts use their muscles to stretch (拉伸) the bands. This keeps their muscles strong.
Space water is different
During another experiment, Wang Yaping made a water ball. This can never happen on Earth. Why?
We need to first understand the surface tension (表面张力)of water. Surface tension is like a “skin” of water. The “skin” is there because water molecules (分子)are drawn to each other. With zero gravity in space, the “skin” stays strong and the water ball will not break.
Space water is different in many other ways from that on Earth. For example, water will not flow downward. If astronauts cry, the tears will stay on their eyeballs instead of falling down. They have to wipe them away!

What is depression(抑郁症)? Some people might think it’s not a big deal, just a sad feeling, while some people see it as a terrible disease. It's important to know what it is as it affects(影响) a lot of people.
46 But with depression, a sad or bad mood(心情) lasts for weeks, months, oreven longer because it is a mental(精神的) illness.
Depression affects more than a person's mood. It can affect the way they act and how well they do in school or at work. 47 If people are depressed, they will feel tired easily and don't want to eat anything. Most of all, depression influences how people think and feel about themselves. People who have depression often feel alone. 48 They may feel bad about themselves or blame(责怪) themselves for having a hard time.
Depression can start small. Friends, family and school can have main emotional (情绪的) effects on teenagers.49 In serious situations, it may lead to suicide (自杀).
However, don't be afraid of it. _50 First, talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent, a teacher, about how you've been feeling. Second, try to spend time with friends or family, even if you don't feel like you want to. And it's better to stay active and exercise, even if it's just going for a walk. 51 What's the most popular Winter Olympics design with kids and teenagers? It must be the mascot (吉祥物). Bing Dwen Dwen, a panda in an ice shell, was chosen as the mascot for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics in 2019.
52 “It is found that successful mascots had to be cute and liked by 9-year-old children,” said Cao Xue,the chief(首席) designer of Bing Dwen Dwen. They once made three designs, and Cao asked his 9-year-old son to choose his favorite. “When he saw those designs, he chose Bing Dwen Dwen, which was the final mascot,” Cao said.
53 According to Cao, the idea came from the traditional Chinese snack, bingtanghulu-the syrup (糖浆) coat later turned into the ice shell(壳) in his design. However, a simple snack cannot stand for a country. Cao's team tried many plants and animals, finally going with a panda. “Pandas can best stand for our country. ” said Cao. “We don't need to explain anything to have it understood across different cultures. ”54 To make sure their panda was different, Cao decided it should be a baby panda. This is how they got Bing Dwen Dwen's body shape. For new ideas, the team visited thepanda nature reserve (保护区). They saw that baby pandas are pigeon-toed(内八字)and often lean in while standing.
55_ Every part of Bing Dwen Dwen has its own meanings. For example, Bing Dwen Dwen wears a full-body “shell” made of ice. It looks like an astronaut in a space suit, showing a perfect mixture of sports and technology.

One day in February, 2020, a hospital in Wuhan received a 75-year-old COVID-19 patient. The patient was hearing-impaired (听障的) and couldn’t write. It was hard for medical workers to communicate with her. Chen Xin, 20, a sign language(手语) interpreter(翻译员)from Nanjing, offered to help - he “talked” with her in a video call.
Chen is a college student. In 2017, he made some hearing-impaired friends. This made him want to learn sign language. Months later he passed an exam and became a professional sign language interpreter.
COVID-19 has brought hearing-impaired people even more challenges. They don't always know how to express new words, such as “Delta variant”(德尔塔变异毒株). Chen wanted to change the situation. In July, when the Delta variant came to Nanjing, Chen worked with local government to record a video with sign language. He explained what the variant is and protective methods. He talked with professionals and decided on the gesture(手势) of “Delta variant” - a triangle (三角形), because the Greek letter “Delta” looks like a triangle.
Chen has been asking for more sign language interpreters to join him. In September, he built a volunteer work room. It now has more than 40 members. They make more sign language videos to explain COVID-19. They also offer free services and organize meetings for more hearing-impaired people.
Talking about his experience, Chen said he was happy to help others. “I want to make things easier for hearing-impaired friends, especially during this difficult time,” he said.

After three months she started feeling a little painful. The doctor helped her a lot to reduce(减少)pains. A month later, her pains disappeared and she got her new electronic arm. It was two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bike. Her Snow White bike was just too old to ride, and it needed repairing as well.
As Christmas came closer, her dream for a bike seemed to disappear, for she didn't mention it again. We were busy buying some beautiful storybooks, a doll house, a holiday dress and toys.
Then much to our surprise, on the evening of December 24, she said she terribly wanted a bike more than anything else.
Then we didn't know what to do. It was just too late for us to make her dream come true. So there was no time to buy the “right bike” for our little girl. Thinking that we were parents who would make their child unhappy, we tried to deal with the problem.
Suddenly my husband came up with an idea. “What if I make a little bike out of clay and write a note that she could trade in the model bike for a real one?”“Perfect!”I shouted. So he spent the next five hours carefully working with clay to make a small bike.
On Christmas morning, we were so excited to wait for our daughter to open the little box with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. She opened it and read the note loudly. She looked at me and her father, and said, “So, does it mean I can trade in this bike for a real one?”Smiling, I said, “Yes. ”Rose had tears in her eyes when she replied, “What a wonderful surprise I have! I will never trade in this beautiful bike that Daddy made me. I prefer to keep it rather than get a real bike ”At that moment, we would have bought her every bike on the earth. 根据短文内容,回答下列问题。(10分)

Magic is the performance of tricks. It is one of the art forms in the world. Magic shows usually include a disappearing act, card tricks, or pulling a rabbit out of a hat. But what could that have to do with health?
Alec Brown, an American magician, who made people have fun with magic as other magicians did in his early days. But later he paid more attention to using it to improve the lives of people with disabilities.

These days, teens are heavily influenced by the media. Many of them have watched TV for thousands of hours. That’s more time than they spend with teachers at school. And that doesn't include the hours they spend using the Internet or reading newspapers.
However, several studies have shown a serious problem: Today's teens have no media literacy (媒体素养) . In other words, they have difficulty critically (批判性地) thinking about the information they see. One study has found that more than 80 percent of teens can't give a careful decision about how good or bad a piece of information is.
Professor Kevin John from Stanford University tries to help his students learn media literacy in his class. The professor gives an example that shows why media literacy is important. In the example, two news stations report a snowstorm. One cares about the terrible road conditions. The other pays attention to kids playing in the snow. “In a news story, news stations
tell you about what they feel important, but the information largely depends on the opinions of the news director,” said John. “A person who has media literacy would realize that each story is about one part of the event at that time.”
Some people think school is the best place to teach media literacy. In fact, everyone—from parents to news reporters — should help teens learn it.
As for the best time to start learning media literacy, many experts suggest being at the age of 12. But others think it could be even earlier. “It's never too early to start learning media literacy,” said John.

Du Fu, one of the greatest poets in China, is well-known to most of us. However, Du Fu remains unknown to many We stem people. Thanks to a recent documentary DuFu: China's Greatest Poet which was directed by Michael Wood, a British historian, they have a chance to know more about Du Fu. As the first English-language documentary about Du, it compares
him to William Shakespeare, one of the greatest writers of the West.
In the BBC's one-hour documentary, the British historian visited a number of places connected with Du Fu. Michael Wood first visited Henan Province, the poet’s birth place. The people there told many fascinating stories of Du Fu. He also visited Du Fu Thatched Cottage (杜甫草堂) in Chengdu, Sichuan, where people can know more about the poet. The documentary also includes works of Du that were read by a famous British actor Sir Ian McKellen. He is known for performing Shakespeare's works.
The documentary explains why Du’s poems have been popular for centuries. It is because Du's poems give us a closer look at history. Du lied during the Tang Dynasty and worked for the emperor called Tang Xuanzong. At fist, the country was rich and peaceful. But the war happened later and it caused huge problems for the whole country. Du Fu felt sad about the rulers of the government. He also went through ups and downs in his own life, but the poet never stopped pouring out his care for his country and people in his poems. Du Fu is known as “the saint of poet” in China. He wrote about 1,400 poems that are still with us today. These poems have been translated into English, which is expected to help Du Fu's works reach more readers.
