I kept trying 911, redialing even as I picked up speed. Just above the tree line, the call finally went through. I did my best to tell the location and trouble we had. And then I returned the phone to its owner, but he stayed in case he could help. I talked and joked with Mike to keep his spirits up. The rest of us kept moving to stay warm. Several hours went by. Nobody came.
At last, a ranger appeared, shouldering a green backpack. She took charge immediately. “We’re going to airlift him out,” she said. “You need to cut down trees so your husband doesn’t hit them as he’s being raised.” We managed to cut down six trees in half an hour. By now, the helicopter was overhead. The ranger radioed the pilot, and he dropped a rope. He rose slowly in the air. Thinking Mike would be at the hospital, I was in relief and felt grateful for all the people who helped Mike.

Susan reads the 9 o’clock news on BBC Television, and Anna reads the 10 o’clock news on Independent Television.
Most news announcers on British television are men, and when Susan began her job at the BBC three years ago, she was the first woman news announcer.
