Meet Incredible Conservation Heroes Saving Wildlife from Extinction
    Anne Savage
Dr. Savage founded a conservation program to protect cotton-top tamarins (棉顶狨猴). She pioneered in the development of new technologies to study the animal in the Colombian forest. She also helped conduct a study that found only 7,500 individuals remained. As a result, the International Union for Conservation of Nature changed the classification of cotton-top tamarins from Endangered to Critically Endangered, which brought the species to more people’s notice.
    Elena Bykova
Having majored in biology, Bykova has a good knowledge of the saiga antelope (赛加羚羊). As Executive Secretary of the Saiga Conservation Alliance, an international organization, Bykova works to save the antelope. Illegal shooting is the single biggest threat, and Bykova concentrates on raising public awareness of the danger, finding alternative livelihood opportunities for local communities, and protecting saiga habitats.
    Jeanne Tarrant
Frogs are astonishingly diverse and beautiful for Dr. Tarrant. Over the years, she has helped put the spotlight on many highly threatened species of frogs that face extinction due to habitat loss, climate change, and hunts by their animal enemies. No wonder she is called the “Frog Lady” of South Africa!
    Marilyn Connell
Living only in the Mary River of Queensland, the Mary River turtle (龟) takes in oxygen in two ways. Being hunted by other wildlife is the Mary River turtle’s biggest threat. Connell and her team investigate the threats to the species and take measures to protect the eggs and newborns from being hunted, ensuring the species has a chance to survive.
    21. What made cotton-top tamarins get more attention?
    A. Dr. Savage’s conservation program. B. The adjustment to their risk category.
    C. Research into cotton-top tamarins. D. The development of new technologies.
    22. What does Elena Bykova do to protect the saiga antelope?
    A. She founds an international organization.
    B. She chooses biology as her main subject of study.
    C. She provides ways for locals to make a living.
    D. She fights against the behavior of illegal shooting.
    23. What affects the survival of both frogs and the Mary River turtles?
    A. Changes to living habits. B. Threats from other species.
    C. Loss of their habitat. D. Difficulty in raising newborns.
    B
Just as the shiny brochure promised, from the moment I set foot on the Harvard campus last fall, I was exposed to an exciting and enlightening new world.

I was born and raised 1, 500 miles away, in a small apartment in Jackson, Mississippi. I am the only child, so my mother overpowered me with her love. For someone who sees so much beauty in the world, she worked awfully hard to protect me from it. Television, rap music, and even basketball with the kids on the block was beyond consideration. It left me a bit bitter as a teenager, but I grew to appreciate her enormous sacrifices — walking me to the library every afternoon, laboring at multiple jobs to keep food on the table, and telling me stories late into the night.
When I announced the summer before my senior year of high school that I had decided to apply to Harvard, I noticed her hesitant look before a warm smile enveloped her face. I pretended not to see, but I was never able to forget it. I tried to explain my reasons for wanting to leave-to prove I was smart enough, fear of taking the path of least resistance, the classic teenage feeling of being trapped — but the words just made me sound shallow and ungrateful.
Nevertheless, I began to work on the college applications---an early one for Harvard and roughly a dozen others standing by. I knew the chance of getting into Harvard was not in my favor. To my joy, I was informed of my acceptance into Harvard three days before my birthday. That night, after all of the celebratory texts and hugs, I sat in my room and began to cry uncontrollably.
Over the course of this year, I have changed in ways I never anticipated. I think I know now why my mother let me go. Harvard has forced me to grow and take a fair look at the world, and at myself. Needless to say, I would not trade the experience for anything.
    24. The underlined word in Paragraph 2 most probably means ________.
    A. made a difference to B. made peace with
    C. took advantage of D. took control of
    25. What was the mother’s first response to the author’s decision?
    A. She was worried about it. B. She laughed at it.
    C. She approved of it immediately. D. She turned a deaf ear to it.
    26. What did the author say about his admission to Harvard?
    A. It deserved a big celebration. B. It served as a late birthday present.
    C. It was beyond his expectations. D. It was a favor he owed his mother.
    27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Lifelong Learning in Harvard
    B. Reflections on the Road to Harvard
    C. What Harvard Means to My Mother and Me
    D. How Harvard Shapes My Teenage Years
    C
A 2020 study in the journal Science concluded that marine heat waves have increased more than 20-fold as a result of climate warming. The authors found that in the first decade after satellites began recording ocean temperatures (i.e., after 1981), there were 27 large marine heat waves, with an average duration of 32 days and an

average peak temperature anomaly of 8.5°F; in the 2010s, there were 172, which lasted 48 days on average with an average peak temperature almost 10°F above normal.
Much remains unclear about marine heat waves. For example, explains Nicholas Bond, research scientist at the University of Washington and Washington’s state climatologist, there is the question of why so many persist for weeks or months. “There must be something else going on that helps maintain them,” he says. He notes that one explanation is that as the ocean surface warms, it radiates heat into the atmosphere that prevents cloud cover from forming, exposing the seawater to increased sunlight and further warming.
However, enough is known about marine heat waves for scientists to be gravely concerned about their potential impacts. Of special note is the fact that those impacts can last long after the heat waves have disappeared. After three years of the Blob, the waters of the northeastern Pacific began to cool in 2016; but years later, scientists are still determining the extent to which the region’s ecosystem is likely to return fully to its pre-Blob status. Similarly, notes Scannell, who is a data scientist with Jupiter Intelligence, Inc., following the 2010- 11 Western Australia event, “lots of kelp(巨藻) forests died, and it takes literally decades for those ecosystems to bounce back.”
Eric Oliver, a scientist from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada, expressed his own opinion about the potential impact of the heat waves in tropical waters. “I think that’s really a tough issue,” he says. Life in the tropics, he notes, is adapted to “quite a narrow range of temperatures. So that’s where things can get really messy. We can have complete shifts in tropical systems.”
    28. What can we infer from the figures listed in para. 1?
    A. The problem of marine heat waves is becoming worse.
    B. The satellites enable scientists to record ocean temperature precisely.
    C. Climate change is the main cause of the marine heat waves.
    D. Marine heat waves have been found by scientists for about 30 years.
    29. What does the 2nd paragraph mainly talk about?
    A. Various factors that lead to marine heat waves.
    B. The possible impacts of a warm ocean surface.
    C. The possible reason why marine heat waves last long. D Scientists’ efforts in exploring the causes of heat waves.
    30. What do we know about the impact of the marine heat waves?
    A. The impact will disappear shortly after the sea water cools.
    B. It takes long before the ecosystem makes a complete recovery.
    C. Scientists have known enough to restore the impact.
    D. The northeastern Pacific and Western Australia are the worst cases.
    31. What is Eric Oliver’s attitude towards the heat waves in tropic waters?
    A. Concerned. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Optimistic.
    D
A group of researchers has developed a new material which is as soft as cotton but as strong as Kevlar and asconductive as many metals. It can be worn and washed like normal clothing and could eventually turn athletic
    clothes into smart “wearables”.
The so-called “carbon nanotube(纳米管)threads” work similarly to the wires in an EKG (心电)monitoring device, which measures heart rhythms to detect heart conditions. But instead of having to be patched(贴上)onto the skin, they can be sewn into a T-shirt and worn like normal athletic clothes, according to a new study from researches at a Rice University Brown School of Engineering lab. And unlike wires, they say the threads can comfortably move with the wearer and be washed, stretched and worn repeatedly without breaking down.
The Rice University lab first developed carbon nanotube fiber in 2013, and has studied its use in medical operations, such as in cochlear(耳蜗的) implants for hearing loss and to repair damaged hearts. But at the time, the
original filaments (细丝) were too thin to be used by a standard sewing machine.
For this latest one, researchers worked with a rope-maker to weave the filaments together into a material similar to regular sewing thread that could be sewn into athletic clothes. The resulting “smart” shirt provides “soft, wearable, dry sensors for continuous” EKG monitoring, the study states.
Though likely a long way off from going into production for consumers, the material could eventually help replace heavy EKG monitors in medical settings and heart rate monitoring watches. With some changes, clothes with these fibers could eventually be able to track other vital signs, according to the researchers.
“You just don’t find soft, flexible, thread-like materials that are comfortable to the touch, that you can work with, that you can build a bridge or you can build a power line out of , but you can also run it through a sewing machine. ” said Oliver Dewy, a member of the research team. “Nothing else behaves like this.”
    32. What’s the feature of the new material?
    A. It’s soft but not strong enough.
    B. It’s flexible but not comfortable.
C . It can conduct electricity easily.
    D. It’s too thin to be used by a standard sewing machine.
    33. What was the carbon nanotube fiber used for initially?
    A. Measuring heart rhythms.
    B. Being sewn into athletic clothes.
    C. Helping patients with hearing loss.
    D. Improving exercise capacity of athletes.
    34. What’s Oliver Dewy’s attitude to this new material?
    A. Favorable.
    B. Doubtful.
    C. Unclear.
    D. Critical.
    35. What’s the best title of the text?
    A. The Future of Sports Clothes
    B. Portable Accurate EKG Monitoring Device
    C. The Study of Carbon Nanotube Fiber
    D. Measuring Heart Rate Through a Smart Shirt

these types of classes if there are not enough students.
Online schools also have different types of learning tools for kids to use. For example, many online schools
have special Web sites where only students registered in online classes can watch videos, see lessons presented, or
chat with teachers and other students. Some online schools have live class times where students can call and talk
    with the teacher directly. ___39___
Computer technology is amazing, and we use computers for chatting with our friends, listening to music, and
playing games. ___40___Since 2012, at least 38 states either have had their own online schools or made rules for
students attending them. It looks like online schools are here to stay, but only you can decide if this type of learning
    is right for you.
    A. Online schools offer many benefits for the learners.

Niesha could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class
into groups to do presentations. Today had been Niesha’s turn. However, her hands had shaken so badly that she
couldn’t read her notes. Her voice had become softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts had kindly ended Niesha’s part of
the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr.
Roberts had hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?”
Niesha had nodded, grateful for the chance. She had gone as quickly as she could to her next class. She had kept
her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen
windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong,
    Niesha?”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class?” Momma asked. She set the timer and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings
and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young,
    standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the
year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first- not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced
my fears. You just need to find your courage.”
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

    Dear Mr. Wilson,
The English Festival is approaching. We would like you to recommend a suitable student who can deliver a speech in English at the opening ceremony.
Firstly, it is a must that the student is proficient both in English writing and speaking. Secondly, we prefer someone who has previous experience in speech contests. Apart from the above, if he/she has an insight into English and its role in today’s cultural communication, that will be a bonus.
We would appreciate it if you could recommend one at your earliest convenience

    Paragraph 1:
Hearing Momma’s words, Niesha gazed at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought. She imagined the scene where her momma tried her best to overcome her fears and pluck up her courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. Perceiving Neisha’s anxiety, Momma reassured her and reached out her hand to tie the blue ribbon onto Niesha’s wrist with a disarming smile. Restored and determined, she gritted her teeth to find her courage. In front of the mirror parked Neisha continuously practicing from pronunciation to tone, even gesture. “Try harder,” she perked herself up when drowsiness fell upon her.
    Paragraph 2:
The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. Shy, she customarily lowered her head and averted her gaze, numb there for seconds. Shortly afterwards, courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the blue ribbon. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, summoned up her courage, “Dear fellow students, ...” Niesha cast a glance at Mr. Roberts standing in the corner smiling at her. A self-reassuring smile spread across Niesha’s face. She knew for sure that she had found her courage, in the mill and in the adversity.

    1. 【原文】M: We can’t afford to give you a lot of money because we don’t have high-paying jobs, but you must always know that your mother and I are very caring when it comes to helping you.
W: I know — and that is what I like about you.
2.【原文】W: Pardon me, what is the price of this keyboard? Is it on sale?
M: It is usually fifty dollars, but it is twenty percent off until the 15th of this month.
    3. 【原文】W: I have to go to the doctor’s office right after school. If you want to go to the beach when I’m done, we can meet up there later.
M: I have to go to dinner with my parents later. Sorry.
    4. 【原文】M: What are you going to order? I’m thinking of getting the noodles.
W: Why not try something else? Their Italian dishes are good. For myself, I haven’t decided.
M: I had one of those yesterday. Let’s split a medium pizza and a large salad then.
    5. 【原文】M: Can you tell me the meaning of “piece of cake”? What about “easy as pie”?
W: Neither is about dessert. They are similar in meaning to “no problem”.
M: Well, have you ever made a pie? There is nothing easy about it.
    6. 【原文】M: What will you do while you’re in Rome?
W: I’d like to visit the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain.
    M: Anything else?
W: Well, also that tower that leans to the side.
M: You mean the Leaning Tower of Pisa?
    W: Yes.
M: Well, that isn’t in Rome. It’s in a town called Pisa. If you’re going to travel anywhere outside of Rome, I suggest Venice instead. You’d like it a lot because you can travel around in boats there.
W: I’m only in the country for a week, though. Would I have time to get to Venice?
M: I think you could spend two days in Venice and the rest in Rome.
    W: Great! I’ll do that.
7.【原文】M: When will you be finished with your work?
W: Give me another hour, please. I just have to write an environmental report before tomorrow.
M: That’s fine. Our dinner reservation isn’t until 8:00. It’s only 5:45 now. We can leave the apartment at 7:15. Is that enough time for you to get yourself ready?
W: Yes, definitely. I don’t want to keep your parents waiting, either, so I’ll try to hurry up.
M: Don’t worry. They can order snacks and drinks if we’re a bit late.
W: I don’t want to make them upset.
M: They understand how important it is to work. They’ll be impressed with your commitment. They’ll also be relieved that at least one of us is earning money, since my book hasn’t found a publisher yet!
W: Ha-ha! OK, Mike. Let me get this done. I can’t concentrate when you’re joking around.
8.【原文】W: How was your trip back home, Michael?
M: It was good. It was fun, and it was…a bit strange, also.
W: What do you mean? I thought you were born in Germany.
M: Actually, I was born in France. My family moved to Germany when I was five, so that’s why I call it home.
W: I see. So what was so strange about it?
M: It’s hard to explain. I mean, I’ve only been living here in England for a few years, but I didn’t realize how long it’s actually been until I saw all my old friends.
    W: Were they different?
M: No, it was me who was different. I expected it to feel like I had never left, but everything felt so unfamiliar to me…like…what is that saying?
W: Like a fish out of water?
M: That’s it. Anyway, I promised to stay more in touch with my friends and learn about their lives.
W: Do you think you will ever go back there to work?
M: I don’t think so. England is my home now.
9.【原文】M: Our biology test is going to be so hard. I failed last week’s test and I’m so afraid of doing the same for this one. I’m going to have to study for hours this week! I’ll never make it to basketball practice.
W: I did well on the last test, so I know I’ll do well on this week’s too. But my soccer team just made it to the final game. I need to practice! If I don’t practice, I could be the reason we don’t win! It’s like when you play baseball in the spring, you guys are always winning and you never have time to study!
M: Yeah, we’re actually really good, but I don’t want to play anymore. The practice takes up too much time, and it’s no longer fun. Besides, my grades are more important to me. Since you can’t study after school, would you want to study together during lunch? There’s an empty classroom on the first floor.
W: Why not study in the library? There are big tables we can use, and it’s in the same building. Just two floors above.
M: The library is too busy. Even though it’s quiet, there are too many people. But I just remembered there are study rooms on the second floor. Let’s go there instead.
    10. 【原文】Good morning, students. We have an important announcement to make this morning. Mr. Jenkins, your physical education teacher, will be leaving us after 25 years at Evergreen High School. Together, we have shared many great memories here, and he is a big part of our school’s history. He led the boys’ basketball team to a championship the last two years and has also helped out with other sports programs. Although we are sad to see him go, we are happy for him, too. He has been a fantastic coach, a teacher, and more importantly, a good friend. He has told us that this decision has been very hard for him. However, his mother has become ill, and it is the right decision for his family. Unfortunately, Mr. Jenkins will not be able to end the year with us, as he is traveling back to his hometown this Friday. This means we won’t have time for a proper goodbye celebration, but we hope you will all visit him before he leaves. And finally, to show respect for our good friend, we will be naming the gymnasium “Jenkins’ Gym” at the end of the month. Taking over his duties until summer vacation will be our math teacher, Mr. Ryan. We also have a goodbye card you can sign at the office. Thank you for your attention and have a good day.

28.推理判断题。根据第一段的句子“The authors found that in the first decade after satellites began recording ocean temperatures (i.e., after 1981), there were 27 large marine heat waves, with an average duration of 32 days and an average peak temperature anomaly of 8.5°F; in the 2010s, there were 172, which lasted 48 days on average with an average peak temperature almost 10°F above normal.(作者发现,在卫星开始记录海洋温度后的第一个十年(即1981年之后),有27次大型海洋热浪,平均持续时间为32天,平均峰值温度异常为8.5°F; 在2010年代,有172次,平均持续48天,平均峰值温度几乎比正常高10华氏度)”和其中的数字对比可以推论出海洋热浪的问题越来越严重。故选A项。
29.主旨大意题。根据第二段的主要内容,特别是前两句话“Much remains unclear about marine heat waves. For example, explains Nicholas Bond, research scientist at the University of Washington and Washington’s state climatologist, there is the question of why so many persist for weeks or months.‘There must be something else going on that helps maintain them’,” he says.(关于海洋热浪还有很多不清楚的地方。
根据第三段的前两句“However, enough is known about marine heat waves for scientists to be gravely concerned about their potential impacts. Of special note is the fact that those impacts can last long after the heat waves have disappeared.(然而,科学家已经对海洋热浪有了足够的了解,足以对其潜在影响表示严重关切。 特别值得注意的是,这些影响可以在热浪消失后持续很长时间)”和下文的例子可知,受到海洋热浪影响后,生态系统要花很长时间才能完全恢复。故选B项。
31.推理判断题。根据文章最后两句话“Life in the tropics, he notes, is adapted to ‘quite a narrow range of temperatures. So that’s where things can get really messy. We can have complete shifts in tropical systems.’(他指出,‘热带地区的生物适应的温度范围相当狭窄。这就是事情会变得非常混乱的地方。我们可以看到热带系统的完全转变’)”可知,Eric Oliver对热带海域的热浪是很担心的。故选A项。

33.细节理解题。根据第三段“The Rice University lab first developed carbon nanotube fiber in 2013, and has studied its use in medical operations, such as in cochlear(耳蜗的) implants for hearing loss and to repair damaged hearts.(莱斯大学实验室于2013年首次开发了碳纳米管纤维,并研究了其在医疗手术中的应用,如用于听力损失的人工耳蜗植入和修复受损的心脏)”可知,最初的时候,这种材料曾用于为听力受损的病人植入人工耳蜗手术过程。故选C项。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段Oliver Dewy 所说“You just don’t find soft, flexible, thread-like materials that are comfortable to the touch, that you can work with, that you can build a bridge or you can build a power line out of , but you can also run it through a sewing machine. ......Nothing else behaves like this.(你不仅找不到这样柔软、有弹性、像线一样摸起来舒服的材料,可以用它来工作,你可以用它来建一座桥或者你可以用它来建一条电线,而且你也可以用缝纫机缝制......没有其他东西像这样)”可知,Oliver Dewy对这种材料给予高度评价,非常赞赏,认为这种材料用途很广,有点很多,最重要的是可以做成线,用缝纫机可以把它做成衣服,再没有别的像这样好的材料了。故选A项。
35.主旨大意题。第一段介绍了一种新材料,结合第二段“The so-called “carbon nanotube(纳米管)threads” work similarly to the wires in an EKG (心电图)monitoring device, which measures heart rhythms to detect heart conditions. But instead of having to be patched(贴上)onto the skin, they can be sewn into a T-shirt and worn like normal athletic clothes, according to a new study from researches at a Rice University Brown School of Engineering lab.( 所谓的“碳纳米管线”工作原理类似于心电图监测设备中通过测量心律来检测心脏状况的电线。但是,根据莱斯大学布朗工程学院实验室的一项新研究,它们不需要贴在皮肤上,而是可以缝在T恤上,像普通的运动服一样穿着)”可知,本文主要介绍一种新材料,这种新材料可以做成线,织在衣服中,从而可以检测心脏状况。故选D项。
