The following 4 famous paintings — from Jan van Eyck's portrait to Pablo Picasso's masterpiece — have stood the test of time.
The Amolfini Portrait
Jan van Eyck’s Amolfini Portrait, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the National Gallery, London. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also an informative document on fifteenth-century society, through van Eyck's heavy use of symbolism — while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.
The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas (帆布), a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12-month stay at the mental hospital near Saint–Remy-de-Provence, France between 1889 and 1890. When the Museum of Modem Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of van Gogh's most famous works.
The Harvesters
The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It depicts the harvest time which most commonly occurred within the months of August and September. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.
Guernica
Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937. The title 'Guernica' refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. Today, the painting is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.
1. Which of the following paintings was produced earliest?
A. Guernica. B. The Harvesters.
C. The Starry Night. D. The Amolfini Portrait.
2. Who created the painting describing the harvest seasons?
A. Pieter Bruegel the Elder. B. Vincent van Gogh.
C. Jan van Eyck. D. Pablo Picasso.
3. What do we know about the paintingThe Starry Night?
A. It was painted on wood in oils.
B. It described the painter's life in hospital.
C. It wasn't widely recognized before 1941.
D. It was given away to the museum by a collector.

Ask people in the UK what the words “Sunday roast” mean to them, and they’ll probably take you back to their grandmothers’ dining rooms - maybe with a few stories of “the greatest puddings” and “the best ever steak”. But now the traditional Sunday roast seems to have been left back in the old days. According to the Daily Mail, just one in 50 British families sits down to this weekly meal together.
There are many reasons why the roast is becoming less popular. In the busy modern world, where breakfast is a slice of toast eaten on the way to work or school and lunch is a quick sandwich in front of the computer screen, people just don’t seem to have the time or patience to make a roast.
And Sunday was once a day when people could easily go to the kitchen to cook. Nowadays, people are often out shopping or at the cinema until it’s far too late to start thinking about heating the oven (烤箱) up.
However, a recent article from The Telegraph warned against being carried away by our tight schedules: “It would be a shame to let this fine old tradition disappear.”
The Guardian further explained that the eating of the big meal is only the half of it. The Sunday roast also makes for relaxed morning activities in the kitchen, and the table becomes the perfect place to share good food and chat with family and friends. “For busy moms and dads, even if you can manage to turn off your mobile phone and the TV only once a week and turn the Sunday roast into a real family event, children can have fun cooking the food and clearing up together.”
8. Why do people pay less attention to Sunday roast?
A. They have a busy lifestyle.
B. They have no interest in cooking.
C. They don’t think it worthwhile.
D. They are living in the modern society.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. A recent article. B. A traditional kitchen.
C. The fine old tradition. D. The Sunday morning activity.
10. How does the author feel towards Sunday roast’s dying out?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive.
C. Uncertain. D. Sorry.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Sunday-Best Time for Family B. Sunday Roast Dying Out
C. It’s the Perfect Time for Us D. Let’s Sit Down Together
A 9. C 10. D 11. B
根据第二段“In the busy modern world, where breakfast is a slice of toast eaten on the way to work or school and lunch is a quick sandwich in front of the computer screen, people just don’t seem to have the time or patience to make a roast.(在繁忙的现代社会,早餐是在上班或上学的路上吃一片吐司,午餐是在电脑屏幕前快速吃一个三明治,人们似乎只是没有时间或耐心做一个烤肉。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段前两句“The Guardian further explained that the eating of the big meal is only the half of it. The Sunday roast also makes for relaxed morning activities in the kitchen, and the table becomes the perfect place to share good food and chat with family and friends.”
And Sunday was once a day when people could easily go to the kitchen to cook. Nowadays, people are often out shopping or at the cinema until it’s far too late to start thinking about heating the oven (烤箱) up.
第一段中的“But now the traditional Sunday roast seems to have been left back in the old days. According to the Daily Mail, just one in 50 British families sits down to this weekly meal together.”
D
As aging population gets bigger and dementia(老年痴呆症) more common, more families are struggling with a complex question: How do you support a loved one with dementia, especially when you have a full-time job and several kids?
Reg Urbanowski may have an answer to this pressing issue-robots.
He and his team managed to develop a new type of robots named TP robots. Looking like stand-up vacuum cleaners(真空吸尘器) attached to an iPad, they can be activated remotely via a smartphone and guided remotely by a controller app similar to the way a mouse is used on a desktop computer. All possess audio and visual communication capabilities, allowing the operator to be “in the room” to interact with Mom or Dad.
He believes that caregivers and family members can use a TP robot to “look in” on people with mild dementia. He says, “TP robots provide an effective solution for reducing caregivers’ burden, especially for those who have career or other out-of-home activities.”
Urbanowski and his team have carried out a study that involves providing TP robots for 15 Toronto families. These robots are programmed to provide reminders of necessary daily routine like turning off the gas, taking medicine and having dinner. They will also help ensure patients are getting the exercise they need to maintain their health and well-being.
Erin Crawford, Program Director with the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, says she has faith that TP robots will prove beneficial, particularly when it comes to reminding people with dementia to do certain things at certain times. “It means that family members that can’t be there, for whatever reason, know that those things are still happening, ”she says.
12. What can we infer about TP robots from Paragraph 3?
A. It’s easy to operate.
B. It can clean the room.
C. It’s convenient to carry.
D. It can be used on a computer.
13. How will TP robots help those with dementia?
A. By having dinner with them.
B By turning off the gas for them.
C. By doing activities with them.
D. By reminding them to take pills.
14. What’s Erin Crawford’s attitude to the future of TP robots?
A. Optimistic.
B. Pessimistic.
C. Carefree.
D. Doubtful.
15. What is the main’ idea of the text?
A. TP robots provide a new cure for dementia.
B. TP robots help to take care of dementia patients.
C. Caregivers of dementia will be replaced by TP robots.
D. Urbanowski and his team are developing a new robot.
A 13. D 14. A 15. B

Time and money are life's most valuable resources. One of the great laws of economics is that time equals money. The phrase “time is money“ is usually credited to Benjamin Franklin, who used it in an essay, Advice to a Young Tradesman, 1748.___16___ He encouraged people to treat time like money. However, most people think about time and money in vastly different ways.
___17___ Poor or rich, we all have 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Thus, each of us faces the choice of how to spend our time. In a world of scarcity, choosing one thing means not being able to do something else.
The value of time varies from person to person. Time is relatively scarce for people with higher incomes, partly because their time is more valuable. So, to have lots of time, rich people hire other people to do their household chores. ___18___
Time cannot be stored. One of the reasons we give little thought about how we use our limited resources is that we cannot save time. ___19___ You can’t bottle time and exchange it for an object or event. However, when people are made aware of their mortality they wonder if they did make the most of their lives.
In sum, time is anything but free. As a non-renewable resource, time is quite expensive. ___20___ Do we want to spend these precious moments on social media or spend that time learning something new? Skills and knowledge take time, so the more time you spend on them, the more you improve.
A Time is our scarcest resource.
B. It means time is a valuable resource.
C. However, it cannot be bought at any price.
D. Time moves on whether we choose to spend it or not
E. Actually, time and money are greatly different from each other.
F. However, a non-working person may spend more time on household chores.
G. Knowing that time is limited encourages us to ask how we are using our time.
B 17. A 18. F 19. D 20. G
根据上文“The phrase “time is money“ is usually credited to Benjamin Franklin, who used it in an essay, Advice to a Young Tradesman, 1748.(“时间就是金钱”这个短语通常被归功于本杰明·富兰克林,他在一篇文章《给一个年轻商人的建议》(1748年)中使用了它)”以及后文“He encouraged people to treat time like money. (他鼓励人们视时间如金钱)”可知,上文提到了“时间就是金钱”这句话的出处,后文则提到了作者想要表达的意识,可知本句承接上文继续说明“时间就是金钱”这句话的含义。故B选项“意思是时间是一种宝贵的资源”符合语境,故选B。
【17题详解】
根据后文“Poor or rich, we all have 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Thus, each of us faces the choice of how to spend our time. In a world of scarcity, choosing one thing means not being able to do something else.(无论贫富,我们都是一天24小时,一周7天。 因此,我们每个人都面临着如何度过时间的选择。在一个资源稀缺的世界里,选择一件事就意味着无法做另一件事)”可知,后文本段强调时间的稀缺,A选项中scarcest对应后文中scarcity。故A选项“时间是我们最稀缺的资源”符合语境,故选A。
【18题详解】
根据上文“The value of time varies from person to person. Time is relatively scarce for people with higher incomes, partly because their time is more valuable. So, to have lots of time, rich people hire other people to do their household chores. (时间的价值因人而异。对于收入较高的人来说,时间相对稀缺,部分原因是他们的时间更有价值。所以,为了有更多的时间,富人会雇人帮他们做家务)”可知,上文提到富人会雇别人来做家务,且本段强调了时间的价值因人而异,可知此处与上一句形成对比关系,F选项中household chores对应上文中household chores。故F选项“然而,一个不工作的人可能花更多的时间在家务上”符合语境,故选F。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Time cannot be stored. One of the reasons we give little thought about how we use our limited resources is that we cannot save time.(时间不能被储存。我们很少考虑如何使用我们有限的资源的原因之一是我们不能节省时间)”以及后文“You can’t bottle time and exchange it for an object or event.(你不能把时间装在瓶子里,用它来交换一个物体或事件)”可知,上文提到时间无法节约,也不能储存和交换,即无论我们选择花还是不花,时间都在流逝。故D选项“无论我们选择花还是不花,时间都在流逝”符合语境,故选D。
【20题详解】
根据上文“As a non-renewable resource, time is quite expensive.(作为一种不可再生资源,时间是非常昂贵的)”以及后文“Do we want to spend these precious moments on social media or spend that time learning something new?(我们是想把这些宝贵的时刻花在社交媒体上,还是花在学习新东西上面?)”
