According to a study done by University of Michigan, shopping to reduce stress was 40 times more effective at giving people a sense of control and shoppers were three times less sad than those only looking at items.
More than half of the 1,000 consumers surveyed by Credit Karma, head researcher of the study, said they have shopped to deal with feelings of stress or depression. About 48 percent of men and 31 percent of women who have stress shopping said they had purchased alcohol when stressed. About 82 percent of women spend on clothing compared to 52 percent of men. Women also lead shopping for jewellery, 42 percent, compared to 22 percent for men.
In some sense, stress shopping can actually help you live a healthier life by making sure that your blood pressure is lowered. The survey found 82 percent had only positive feelings about their purchases and that the positive mood was long-lasting. However, stress shopping, for many, could grow into a drive that uses up money, causes conflict, and therefore adds great stress to life.
Despite the in-time joy from purchases, stress shopping never proves a long-lasting cure to stress or depression. Actually it needs to be avoided anyhow. Whether you’re purchasing Christmas presents or buying groceries having the items you need written down will provide you with brightness while shopping. Reward yourself for sticking to your list and you’ll be more likely to commit to it.
In addition always think about what you struggle with most financially. Do you spend too much money at the mall? Eating out? Vacations? Make a list of where your money is going and take necessary steps to resist your desire. For example, if you spend too much money on dining out on weekends, stuff your cupboard with food on Friday. So you’ll be more likely to stay in and cook. And you need to give up the need to keep up with others. Everyone’s financial situation is different and comparison may lead to debt and dissatisfaction with what you already have.
24.Why does the author mention those numbers in Paragraph 2?
A.To support an idea. B.To attract readers.
C.To call for actions. D.To introduce a topic.
25.Which of the following may help deal with stress shopping?
    A.Stimulating desires. B.Recording spending.
C.Turning to medicines. D.Comparing with others.
26.What is the author’s attitude to stress shopping?
    A.Unclear. B.Doubtful. C.Objective. D.Negative.
27.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Does shopping benefit us? B.More stressed, women or men?
C.Should we compare with others? D.Can stress shopping reduce stress?

    C
Teaching middle-school children about climate change may be one of the most important things we can do to save the planet. It’s those kids who have the most potential, according to a new study.
It’s at this developmental age that students can master complex concepts like climate change and remain open to new ideas, the researchers say.Middle school is usually when we start to figure out how we really feel about the world and to form our own opinions.
The researchers carried out an experiment with students in North Carolina. They gave specialized climate change training to middle school teachers, sharing lessons that would specifically encourage the kids to interact with their parents and talk about the topic.Research has shown that lessons on climate change that have the most impact typically frame the topic around something you can often see or experience,so the lessons were focused on these themes, such as how the environment relates to animals or how an individual can directly affect the environment.
The researchers divided the students into two groups:a control group that didn’t get the specialized lessons and an experiment group who did. They also surveyed parents before, during and after the program, following these groups for two years.
After the program, the 357 students who got the special lessons and their parents showed a larger change in their level of concern about climate change than the 224 students who did not get the training. The 357 kids, the study found, can best reach adults and encourage them to act to fight climate change, regardless of their parents’ political beliefs. In fact, the researchers found this method has the greatest impact on the people who are otherwise hardest to convince:conservative (保守的) males.
“I really think it is very timely and really speaks to the fact that we have to prepare kids for climate change,”said study author Danielle Lawson.“Immediate action is key.We have about 12 years to take action together to keep the global average temperature from rising 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels.Beyond that critical point, climate change will have done permanent damage.”
28.Why do middle-school children have the most potential?
A.They are free from wrong ideas. B.They like to deal with complexity.
C.They are interested in the outside world. D.They are at an age to form their own views.
29.How can we describe the lesson topic?
    A.Challenging. B.Familiar. C.Charming D.Limited.
    30.What did the study find?
A.People’s political beliefs are hard to change.
B.The 357 kids are good at communication skills.
C.Kids receiving the lessons influence their parents more.
D.No method but this one can convince conservative males.
31.What can be inferred from Danielle Lawson?
A.We have enough time to take action.
B.It’s urgent to deal with climate change
C.The kids can solve the future climate challenge
D.We can do nothing about global warming after 2034.

A small device no bigger than a toaster has generated oxygen on the surface of Mars, bringing the chances of surviving on the red planet a step closer.
The Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, better known as Moxie, has been generating oxygen from the atmosphere on Mars, as part of NASA’s Perseverance rover (漫游者)mission.
Moxie produced breathable oxygen in seven hour-long tests conducted in various weather and atmosphere conditions since landing. During each test, the device produced six grams of oxygen, about the same as a small tree and enough to sustain an astronaut for 15 minutes. It’s also found that even in extreme temperatures and after a Martian dust storm, Moxie continued to produce high-purity oxygen.
“This is the first demonstration of actually using resources on the surface of another planet and transforming them chemically into something that would be useful for a human mission,”said Jeff Hoffman, a retired astronaut and professor at MIT.
NASA and the MIT team are planning to build a bigger version of Moxie, as they hope advanced models will produce enough oxygen to support a crewed mission to Mars. “We have to bring a lot of stuff from Earth to support a human mission, but oxygen is a big problem. If you can make it there, go for it and you’re way ahead of the game,” Hoffman said.
The device uses pumps that absorb in carbon dioxide which is heated to 800 ℃ and processed to separate the carbon and oxygen. Carbon monoxide(一氧化碳)is emitted as waste while the pure oxygen is left behind.
Expanding the device to support a human mission to Mars presents challenges. It is needed to run continuously for 400 days, a leap from the one-hour tests and its inner temperature should be controlled stably. Moxie has proved to endure the extreme conditions on Mars, however, and the team plans to assess the machine’s limits in the coming months when atmosphere is thick and carbon dioxide levels are high. They say they just want to set everything as high as they dare and make as much oxygen as they can.
32.What can we learn about Moxie?
A.It works well in a series of tests.
B.It aims to purify breathable oxygen.
C.It is stopped by extreme conditions.
D.It produces oxygen enough for a team.
33.By quoting Hoffman’s words in Paragraph 5, the author intends to_____.
A.present a plan to further explore Mars
B.demonstrate NASA’s ambition to win the game
C.show the plentiful and useful resources on Mars
D.highlight the significance of making oxygen on Mars
34.Which of the following best describes the team according to the last paragraph?
A.Cautious and ambitious. B.Confident and intelligent.
C.Practical and independent. D.Courageous and imaginative.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A NASA Mars rover landed successfully. B.Challenges for a human mission to Mars.
C.Human survives with oxygen made on Mars. D.A little oxygen on Mars, a great leap forward.

    第二节读后续写(满分25分)
    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
    Be a true runner
For me, it was normal to feel lost at the inter-camp track. Four camps of kids were ready to lead their teams to a blue ribbon and win the day. Not me. I was too little to be the leader and too skinny to be an athlete. I knew this by the time I was twelve, because my camp counselors(辅导员)and the other kids reminded me of it every chance they got. So when our camp needed a fourth runner in the two-mile race around the lake, I knew I was no one’s first choice.
I hid in the shade of a maple tree as they called the names of the runners, my body tensed as I heard a counselor call, “Fred! Where is Fred! He is in this race!” It was Barry. He spotted me under the tree. “Fred! We need a 12-year-old who hasn’t been in other events to run the two-mile!”
He gave me a push towards the starting line. Having no confidence and trying to save myself from the shame of taking the last place as four camps watched, I pleaded with him.
“But I don’t know the way around the lake!”
“You’re in. Just follow Bill!” Barry smiled.
Bill was my friend and the fastest runner in our camp. And then Barry said, “When you make it to the last stretch(最后一程)on the field, just throw your head back and run.”
At the starting line, I stood next to Bill and trembled.
“On your mark… Get set...” The gun cracked and sixteen of us took off. I stayed close on Bill’s heels, a little too close for Bill, I guess. He shouted at me, “Back off!”
I did. Two guys passed me, but I kept my eyes on Bill.
It was tiring. The distance was widening between Bill and me. We made the turn from the dusty road onto the muddy, wooded trail that would go around the lake back to the field. Through the trees, I saw Bill trip over a tree root and fall. A runner from another camp passed him.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置。
In a moment, Bill was up again and running.

    参考答案:
    1.B
【原文】M: What is in that field over there? I think it is a sheep.
W: I see it. No, it’s actually a cow. I wish we would see a horse. I’ve always wanted to ride one!
    2.C
    【原文】
    3.A
【原文】M: Last night I had an interesting dream. I dreamed I won a competition.
W: Oh, that sounds cool. What did you win, money or a new car?
M: A holiday on an amazing island. How I wish it could come true!
    4.B
【原文】M: What would you like to have for dessert, apples or oranges?
W: As for dessert, I’d like to have oranges rather than apples. But usually I prefer watermelons to anything else.
    5.C
【原文】M: How is everything going in your classes?
W: Well, it’s a little hard for me to follow everything my teachers say, especially in my math and chemistry classes. I first thought physics would be difficult, but it turns out pretty interesting to me.

    6.A    7.C
【原文】W: Tell me about the basketball match, John.
M: Well, our team played well. We scored lots of points. Then I fell and hurt my leg, but I carried on playing. The other team was really better than us, though.
    W: So did you lose?
M: No, because in the final seconds, I managed to get the ball, jump up to the basket and score. That meant we’d won! I thought my team might carry me out of the gym like a hero, but they didn’t. So I was a bit disappointed.
    W: Well, maybe next time.

    8.B    9.C
【原文】M: The trees here in the garden are beautiful. But they don’t look native to this place.
W: Yeah. My grandfather planted them himself. He got seeds from different parts of the world. The ones by the house are from New Zealand. But the tall ones in the back garden are from Australia. This one in the front garden is from California, and it’s my favorite tree to climb.
M: Are the flowers from different places, too?
W: No, they’re all from here in Florida.

    10.B    11.A    12.C
【原文】M: Time for bed, Susie. Christmas break is over, and you have to be in class at 8:00 tomorrow.
W: But I’m not tired, Dad. Can’t I just play one more video game?
    M: It’s already 10:30.
    W: I know, but I promise I won’t be tired. Please?
M: Don’t you have exams soon? If you’re going to stay up, shouldn’t you be studying?
W: Oh, I forgot all about that.
M: You’ve been doing well in English and history, but you’ve had problems with math, haven’t you?
W: Yeah. Maybe I can go to sleep now and then get up early and look at my math textbook.
    M: That’s a good idea.
W: Dad, can I just play for thirty more minutes? It’s the last bit of my holiday!
    M: No.
    W: Fine.

    13.C    14.B    15.A    16.B
【原文】W: We’re talking with Yang Wei, who just returned home to China after living in San Francisco for one year. What would you say is the biggest difference between your life in America and your life in China?
M: I guess the most obvious one would be the food culture. In Beijing, people eat out a lot, and people tend to be much more loud and outgoing in restaurants. For example, in China, it is common to see people drinking and talking loudly in the middle of a restaurant. In America, however, people like to enjoy a quiet meal. If you are too loud, the waiter might come over to your table and remind you to keep it down, and they would certainly not serve you drink if you appeared drunk.
W: What about the variety of food?
M: This is where America might have the advantage. Although Chinese food is unbelievably varied, I would have to say that the quality of food from all over the world is better in the States. While there are many Africans, Europeans, and North Americans in China, there are even fewer people from the Middle East, South America, and the Caribbean. As a result, it is harder to find really good food from those areas. But America has always been a country of immigrants (移民), so this is one area in which it just might be No.1 in the world.
W: Interestingly. Why don’t we take some questions from the audience?

【原文】M: Hello, everyone. I’m an engineer from Apple. It’s my great honor to be here to share my knowledge with so many international scientists and business owners. I’m grateful for your coming. I’ve spent my entire career trying to advance the quality of artificial intelligence, or AI for short. But back in college, I majored in marketing and had absolutely no idea of AI at all.So how did I start my career in this field? Apple’s Siri was the first application of AI that I had ever known. From that invention, I knew AI would change the world one day. I then put my heart and efforts into it. That was 10 years ago. Luckily, it turns out that I have made the right choice. Now the industry has made much progress and is playing an increasingly important role in people’s life. The public nowadays feels excited about its development. AI frees them from boring and low-skilled tasks, making life a lot easier and more enjoyable. But I feel that we are still in the early days of AI. We are viewing current AI technology as we viewed computers in the 1990s. There is still a long way to go.

In a moment, Bill was up and running. I couldn’t think of anything but to follow him closely. I could even feel the air hitting my face and I was totally worn out. Naturally, my pace slowed down. Just at the moment, Barry’s words “Just follow Bill” called me back. Convinced that I was no longer a loser, I refreshed up again and accelerated and soon I was quite close to Bill again. Injected with confidence, I headed for the finishing line. The gun cracked again, announcing the last 200 meters. I closed my eyes, threw my head back and ran with my last ounce of strength, in the direction of the dream line.
I didn’t know when I crossed the line. I still kept running on when a thunderous applause burst, which signaled the birth of the champion. I stopped and opened my eyes and saw my camp of kids and the camp counsellor gathering around me. “We have won the race! We are the champion!” they shouted and cheered, throwing me in the air. Showered with hugs and applause and whistles, I felt a surge of gaiety sweeping over me. To me, the race meant more than a champion; it well proved that I was not a loser as an athlete and that I could further explore my potential. Just as Hemingway put it, “The true nobility is superior to your former self.”
