Because Night Turns into Day班级:____________学号:____________姓名:____________心灵鸡汤精选Because Night Turns into Day话题归类阅读难度词数笑对人生四星503【文章梗概】我的14岁的儿子Marshawn患有儿童自闭症,经常会起得早而睡得晚。 Every cloud has a silver lining.(天无绝人之路,凡事都有好的一面。) Some see a hopeless end, while others see an endless hope.~Author UnknownEvery now and then, my fourteen-year-old son Marshawn, who has autism, goes through phases where he wakes up very early. I’m talking 4 or 5 a.m. early, when the alarm is set for 7:30. It’s frustrating to say the least, particularly because he doesn’t fall asleep until pretty late, and I’m usually exhausted. By the time I get him to fall back to sleep, it’s time for us to wake up.One morning after an “early awakening,” I asked him why he had gotten up so early. He said, “Because night turns into day. The sun rises.”That was the last thing I expected him to say. Honestly, I didn’t expect him to give me a real reason at all, as he often repeats my questions rather than answers them. As a person who loves watching the sky, all I could do was appreciate his response, although I’m grateful he doesn’t wake up at the crack of dawn every single day. For days after that brief conversation, I couldn’t stop thinking about his words, and it had nothing to do with the sky. It resonated with me, because I felt a sense of encouragement that he didn’t even know he had blessed me with.Life can definitely be hard, and I sometimes find myself in a dark place trying to find balance and make the right choices from one day to the next. I often feel lost, and think that there has to be more to life than feeling like this. Parenting, in my opinion, is one of the toughest jobs there is. Being a single mom of a child with autism presents a whole other dimension of challenges which affects every single decision that I make — important choices like work and child care, and more subtle things like whether a public place we choose to visit has family bathrooms, because I can’t send my teenaged child into a men’s room alone. Transitions, puberty, social and behavioral difficulties are just a few of the things that cloud my mind on a daily basis. However, life is not always a sad song. Despite the tough times that we’ve encountered, his words ring true. “Night turns into day. The sun rises.” During my son’s evaluations and around the time of the initial diagnosis, I was beyond overwhelmed. It’s hard to see the bright side of a difficult situation when it blindsides you.As time goes on, and with each milestone, with each goal accomplished, with each amazing thing that my son does, I have seen night turn into day. I have become more optimistic, gained a lot more clarity of mind, and things have become brighter. Marshawn helps me to see life differently and to look beyond the obvious. Days are sometimes stormy, but his presence always reminds me to see the beauty in each one . . . to see the beauty in life with a son who is unique, loving, brilliant and the greatest gift I could have. 1.autism ɔːtɪzəm ] n.______________________________2.phase [feɪz] n.______________________________3.frustrating [frʌˈstreɪtɪŋ] adj.______________________________4.pretty [ˈprɪti] adv.______________________________5.exhausted [ɪɡˈzɔːstɪd] adj.______________________________6.transition [trænˈzɪʃn] n.______________________________7.puberty [ˈpjuːbəti] n.______________________________8.cloud [klaʊd] vt.______________________________9.encounter [ɪnˈkaʊntə(r)] vt.______________________________10.diagnosis [ˌdaɪəɡˈnəʊsɪs] n.______________________________11.crack [kræk] n.______________________________12.resonate [ˈrezəneɪt] vi.______________________________13.definitely [ˈdefɪnətli] adv.______________________________14.subtle [ˈsʌtl] adj.______________________________15.teenaged [ˈtiːneɪdʒd] adj.______________________________16.overwhelmed əʊvəˈwelmd] adj.______________________________17.blindside [ˈblaɪndsaɪd] vt.______________________________18.milestone [ˈmaɪlstəʊn] n.______________________________19.clarity [ˈklærəti] n.______________________________【句子学习】请根据中文句子填空。 1. The presents were wrapped under the tree. Everything was perfect except one thing was missing the star on the top of the Christmas tree. Lilly and Brandon were born first, and decorating the tree soon became the focus of our Christmas traditions. We would lift one of the kids up high to put the star on top. “The star that shone with promise,” I told the kids. The two kids took turns to do this important job. Then Finn was born. He was a happy baby, until Matt and I noticed something odd when he was 14 months old. He didn’t interact with us anymore. Then, his autism (自闭症) diagnosis came out. How to be the family Finn needed us to be? In so many situations, I didn’t have an answer. Finn turned three years old, and I hoped he was ready to take part in adding the final touch to our tree. It would be his first time, a chance to connect with us through this tradition. Matt took the older kids’ hands and stepped back to give us some room. I took the star from its box. “Here, Finn,” I said, putting the star in his little hand. “It’s your turn to put this on the top of the tree!” I went to pick him up. Finn didn’t seem to understand. He threw the star on the floor and twisted in my arms. “Finn,” I said, “It’s okay, honey.” Still, he fought me. Finally, I put him down. I wanted to try again, but he ran away. “Finn!” I called after him, but he ignored me. “Give him time,” Matt said. It didn’t feel right to let Lily or Brandon place the star instead. It was Finn’s turn, and I didn’t want to leave him out. So, the tree remained starless that Christmas. The next Christmas too. And the one after that. waiting for Finn. This Christmas, however, I simply gave up trying and left the star in the box somewhere in the basement. Matt brought some presents to the living room for the kids besides the starless tree. “You want to put the star on the top?” I asked, looking where his finger was pointing. 1.autism ɔːtɪzəm ] n. 1. Lilly and Brandon were practically shouting with excitement. “Come on, Dad!” “Let’s do this!” I cast a glance at Finn, still playing on his own. With a sigh, I sat down on the couch. I thought Finn might get to his gifts in his own time. Lilly and Brandon surrounded their father while he sorted the presents. Suddenly, Finn came up to me. He pulled on my sleeve to get my attention. Finn pointed to the top of the tree.“You want to put the star on the top?” I asked, looking where his finger was pointing. Finn nodded. I hurried to the basement and got the star. I handed him the star. He gripped it tightly and determinedly. I could feel the other kids holding their breath. Matt raised Finn onto his shoulders for a good reach. My heart pounded. Finn held on to the star. “Go, Finn! You can do it!” Lilly and Brandon said. Finn set the star on the top branch and slowly drew back his hand. We all cheered with tears. Finn looked down at us from a top his dad’s shoulders, beaming like a star himself.
