【文章梗概】我通过一个偶然的机会结识一位卡车司机，他经常利用工作之余去探望穿小丑服探访生病的孩子，并且他向我回忆了这么做的原因：他曾经用他的耐心与努力将一位从未理睬任何医护人员的小男孩进行了成功的沟通。这是他感觉做的最有意义的事情并将它作为动力坚持下去，向生病的孩子播撒希望与爱。

The summer of ’86, my wife and I were heading east when we came upon an 18-wheeler. The driver was signaling to get into my lane, so I eased down on the brake. As the truck pulled ahead we heard on our CB radio, “Thank you, four-wheeler.” We engaged in CB chat and asked him if he knew of a good place to eat. He said to follow him.

We sat together at the restaurant and asked him about his handle (CB name). It was Frankie the Clown. He said that he spends a lot of time on the road and many lonely nights in hotel rooms. He carries a clown suit with him, and sometimes during a layover, he dresses up and visits with children at the nearest hospital. A towering man with gigantic, rough-hewn hands, it was hard to imagine him in costume. Then he told us a story about why he did this. The twinkle in his soft brown eyes spoke volumes about his rewards.

I was pulling a load, nervous ’cause I was behind schedule. Just then, my engine starts to overheat so I took her to a garage. They told me to leave her while they waited for parts. So I checked into a hotel, bent out of shape because this was going to cost me big.

Even though I felt like sulking alone in my room, I convinced myself to put on my clown outfit and head to the nearest hospital.

When I arrived, I told the nurse in charge of the children’s ward why I was there.Reluctantly, she let me do my thing. I knocked softly on the first door but got no response. I carefully opened the door and saw a little boy, about three or four years old, lying in his bed and staring at the ceiling. I bounced over to him and said, “Hi! I’m Frankie the Clown. What’s your name?” He continued to ignore me, his small lips pursed together. Fighting the urge to move on to the next room, I started my routine. Finally, I got a smile, which kept me going. Within minutes, the boy was laughing out loud and so was I. We were having so much fun that I hardly noticed the nurse as she came in, wrinkled her brow, then left. We began to talk. He told me his name was Johnny and he was four years old.

Just then, I noticed the room filling up with nurses, doctors and orderlies. Oops, what did I do? I thought. Turning to the nurse, I apologized for making such a racket.

She looked me straight in the eye and said, “Frankie, you’ve got it all wrong. You aren’t a nuisance—you’re a blessing! This little boy has been with us for three weeks and no one, I mean, no one has been able to get any response from him. We apologize for interrupting, but when I told my co-workers that the little boy in room 109 was talking and laughing, they had to see it for themselves!”

As I rode back to my hotel, I wasn’t frustrated or mad because I was losing money. I was on top of the world. My load would be late and I still wouldn’t be rich. But I had made a little boy in room 109 laugh, and I felt like a million bucks.

My anger almost exploded when I was met the knowing looks that everyone gave me. Annoyance and embarrassment filled my heart. Why could Anne let out my secret? How could she do that to me? She lost all my trust and friendship.

Five years ago, Anne was new to our class. She was polite and shy, wearing a warm smile that attracted me towards her. She was the most friendly person I had ever met. We started as classmates but after a few months we were like best friends. We did homework together and hung out on weekends. We shared a lot of secrets and gave each other a lot of good advice. That was a sweet time.

However, I couldn’t expect such a big betrayal(背叛) from her. I didn’t know what made me tell Anne about my personal life. My dad lost his job, so I had to drop out of my favorite Ballet. A new pair of Ballet shoes was one of the things that we could not afford! Giving up the class made me sad, but I hoped it was just the secret between me and my best friend.

The next day when I walked by the next classroom, I felt several girls staring at me and talking in a low voice. My face turned red at their whisper like “Ballet” and “shoes”. Embarrassed and hurt, I ran away in tears.

I felt much regret to myself and avoiding Anne in and out of school. Soon afterwards, I was glad that our family moved to another town where Dad got a new job and no one would laugh at me. Anne called me many times but I didn’t answer. My heart was broken because the person whom I trusted most cheated me.

I started a new life, leaving all the bad memories behind since growing up naturally involved many stories, both bitter and sweet ones. Five years later, with the life going on, I made new friends and seldom thought about the past.

It was Mary who had a big mouth and always wanted to put her nose in other people’s matters. She happened to overhear my conversation with Anne. I was all at sea, feeling that the floor had slipped away beneath my feet. Anxious and regretful, I asked Linda for any contact with Anne.

I immediately called Anne. After getting through, I sincerely apologized to her. She said softly: “Never mind. We are good friends.” I was in tears, guilt and joy. At that moment, I wished it had not happened. I wished time could go back and I could overcome my mistake. From that I got a lesson in life that we should learn to trust our loved ones, because a little mistake can lead us to ruin what we should value. Trust is the foundational principle that holds friendship. Trust is also the easiest thing in the world to lose. We need to be open and trust our friends.
