Kazuo Ishiguro, who won the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature, has a number of strings to his bow,or rather his guitar. The 64-year-old is world-famous as a writer of fiction, but his early dream was to be a great singer and songwriter, like 2016's winner,Bob Dylan.
As his name indicates,Ishiguro comes from a Japanese background, although he came to Britain from Japan at the age of 5 and is a British citizen who writes in English. He was educated at the University of East Anglia,a school that has become known for training writers.
Ishiguro's writing is highly self-contained.This certainly gives his writing a quality in common with that of Jane Austen,an author to whom he is often compared. The best example of this is his novel The Remains of the Day,which later became a successful film.
The central character of the book is a butler(男管家)called Stevens. He is a loyal servant to an English lord, and a character who some people might call repressed. He misses out on affection and love because he will not admit his feelings to anyone. We have to read between the lines to uncover the “real” story, which isn't quite the one the butler is telling.Stevens finds it a challenge to communicate, and communication is often a theme in Ishiguro's novels.
In this author's works, there is a gap between our feelings and our ability to communicate them. The Nobel Committee stressed it when talking about Ishiguro's works: The writer has uncovered the abyss(深渊)beneath our unreal sense of connection with the world.

I am a new knitter (编织者),but an experienced novelist. It's only lately that I've begun to realize what my two favorite activities have in common. While majoring in biology at college,I had been working hard at my classes,so I was looking for something easy to do.From the moment I began writing,it absorbed my attention, seven hours could pass like seven minutes.I had found my passion!
Knitting had the same effect on me.I've never been a crafty (心灵手巧的)person. But for whatever reason, knitting became my passion for those times when I needed an excuse to sit.
When I decided to go to graduate school to learn creative writing,I met many other writers who were convinced they would one day be successful. The thing is,the writers who managed to publish books weren't necessarily the ones who were so confident,or even talented.Instead, they were the writers most committed to working and revising their writing. They brought many stories and reworked them over and over again.
Similarly, with every sweater I've made,I've had to go back and pull it out many times.“You're not really going to do it over again, are you?” my husband will ask.“Nobody will even see that!” Maybe not.But I'll know the mistake is there,so I pull out the sweater and start over, the same way I revise my imperfect sentences.
During two decades of writing fiction,I still hadn't sold a novel, only a memoir (回忆录).Disappointed,I self-published one of my novels,Sleeping Tigers. Two weeks later,my agent sold my newest novel, The Wishing Hill.I have a knitting group, and my writing life has been made possible by being friends with other fiction writers, who cheer each other on through rejections, revisions, and publication, too.
Whether you're writing or knitting, follow your passion with purpose and give yourself the time each project takes to start, complete, and revise — even if you have to pull the whole thing apart and start over.

Half off usually unaffordable products?Only $49.99 for that $100.00 dinner? That's the magic of Groupon, but for some small business owners the “great business” offered by Groupon can be equal to the kiss of death. How could that occur?
The math of Groupon seems simple at a glance, but upon further inspection the numbers don't add up when it comes to smaller businesses.A Groupon deal typically offers a 50% discount on a product or service, and then the remaining profit is divided between Groupon and the small business. While Groupon has already received the profit in advance, the merchant is left waiting for their cut. Those worrying numbers are assuming the price cut is 50/50,which,in some cases,is being generous.
When you break it down to numbers,a Groupon deal seems disastrous, but it's not only the numbers small business owners have to worry about. The point of Groupon deals is to attract new and hopefully longterm customers.Yet,does this actually happen? The majority of consumers buying the Groupon are there for the bargain and don't return after using their Groupon.CFHS Junior Angelita Pope stated,“I love the deals offered by Groupon! They can really save you so much money.” However, she went on to say that she hadn't returned once to any of the businesses after using her Groupon.
For some small businesses, the pressure lies with the responses of their loyal customers, who watch as new faces get the same product or service for half the price that they have been paying for years. When you break it down,Groupon indicates that the business offering the deal is not only willing to be flexible with their price, but also that their product or service isn't worth the price they're charging for. When combining these factors,it's no wonder loyal customers are put off by the idea of their favorite shop offering Groupons.
Now I by no means say Groupon has bad effects on all businesses;however, the storm of Groupon is actually a disaster for a small business.
