Teenagers in England do much the same as children in America do. They enjoy sending messages by their mobile phones and they also like swimming, listening to the latest music, watching TV and surfing the Internet.
How do teenagers in England spend their free time and holidays? Let’s follow Sally, a British teenager, and spend five days with her during her school holiday.
Day One
After breakfast, Sally’s mother went out and left her alone at home. She checked her mobile phone during lunch—one of her friends sent her a message early in the morning. Dinner was at 6:30 p. m. After that, she finished her English homework. Then she surfed the Internet.
Day Two
Sally and her mother paid a visit to their friends and went swimming together. Later, they went shopping for clothes and books, and had dinner in a restaurant.
Day Three
She went to the supermarket with her mother to buy fish and chips for lunch as well as some pens. After she got back home, she spent the next few hours surfing the Internet and watching TV.
Day Four
She surfed the Internet. Her mother took her out for lunch before she went to work. She then read stories after lunch.
Day Five
She woke up at 2 p. m., and so did her mother. They went to a park. Her mother met some friends there. When they got home, it was already time for dinner. Afterwards, she did her homework until 10 p. m.
1. When did Sally do her homework?

I had heard about VR (虚拟现实) being used in the classroom but didn't think I'd ever try it. I actually got a VR headset ( 耳机) as a New Year present from my friend and started searching for apps online to see whether it could be useful in my classroom. I soon found a free app through Google Cardboard and knew I had a lesson!
To use VR in the classroom, you need two things: a smartphone that can download the app or video, and a headset. To find the actual videos we'd be watching, I searched through free VR apps like Orbulus, Trench Experience VR and Cardboard. I also found hundreds of videos on YouTube. The key is to find videos made with the 360 cameras. While they don't give the kids a 3-D experience like the apps, they are still amazingly immersive ( 沉浸式虚拟现实的) when viewed through the headsets.
So far we've had three lessons. I first used the headsets with my seventh grade U. S. History class. The Trench app allows students to “walk” through a trench (战壕) during World War I and learn about many of the tools used during that time. My second activity was working with the sixth grade Geography class. They used the headsets strictly as viewers to watch a 360 video taking them through a rocky landscape. My final activity was the most interesting one, according to the reactions (反应) of my eighth grade Civics students. I was able to find a White House 360 tour that was made a few years ago.
For the rest of this year, I plan to continue using apps and 360 videos in my classes. Next year I'm going to write to my boss asking for a 360 video camera so that I can begin to create my own VR field trips for the students.
4. When did the author get the idea of trying VR in her classroom?
A. When she was searching for apps online.
B. After she received a VR headset as a gift.
C. When she was having a conversation with her friend.
D. After she heard about VR being used in the classroom.
5. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The kids. B. The apps. C. The videos. D. The headsets.
6. Which VR lesson was the most popular one among students?
A. The Civics lesson. B. The Science lesson.
C. The Geography lesson. D. The U.S. History lesson.
7. What will the author do next year?
A. Buy a 360 video camera. B. Create 360 videos by herself.
C. Take her students on more field trips. D. Try new teaching methods in her classes.
C
Your chair is your enemy.
It doesn’t matter if you go running every morning, or you’re a regular at the gym. If you spend most of the rest of the day sitting, you are putting yourself at increased chance of heart disease, cancers and an early death. In other words, even if you exercise energetically, sitting for long periods is bad for you.
So what’s wrong with sitting? One is that sitting is one of the most passive things you can do. You burn more energy by chewing gum than you do sitting still in a chair. Compared to sitting, standing in one place is hard work. To stand, you have to tense your leg muscles, and the muscles of your back and shoulders. While standing, you often change from leg to leg. All of this burns energy.
For many people, weight gain is a matter of slow increase. Thus, a little more time on your feet today and tomorrow can easily make the difference between remaining thin and getting fat. So part of the problem with sitting a lot is that you don’t use as much energy as those who spend more time on their feet. This makes it easier to gain weight, and makes you more likely to suffer from the health problems that fatness often brings.
Some people have advanced solutions:replace your sit-down desk with a stand-up desk. Make sure that your television can only operate if you are practising on an exercise bike. Replace your office chair with a therapy (治疗) ball: this too uses more muscles, and more energy, than a normal chair, because you have to support your back and work to keep balanced. But whatever you choose, know this. It is clear: be careful of your chair.
8. The main purpose of writing this passage is to ___________.
A. suggest sitting less B. advise exercising often
C. avoid gaining weight D. escape standing more
9. From this passage, we know that ___________.
A. standing burns nearly as much energy as sitting still does
B. taking exercise regularly but sitting more will do good
C. less exercise will reduce the chance of having disease
D. energy-burning activities will help you enjoy good health
10. The underlined word “This” in paragraph 4 refers to “ ___________”.
A. Gaining weight B. Burning energy
C. Sitting too much D. Standing more
11. A therapy ball is mentioned in the last paragraph to ___________.
A. tell us to walk while working in the office
B. suggest a way to settle the sitting problem
C. support our back and keep us balanced
D. provide a better cure for our backache
D
People speak English in different parts of the world. The same words can be used in different ways, depending on where you live. People can also have completely different ways of saying the same thing.
The Oxford English Dictionary(OED) is asking the public to help it add new words. Editors want to find the regional differences in English around the world. They want to expand its record of the language.
Last year, the OED, BBC Radio and the Forward Arts Foundation teamed up to find local words in the United Kingdom. It resulted in more than 100 regional words and phrases being added to the dictionary. One was “cuddy wifter”, which means “a left-handed person”.
Now, the OED is widening its search to English speakers around the world. Eleanor Maier, an editor at OED, said the response has been great. Editors are listing a bunch of suggestions to include in the dictionary.
These include Hawaii's “hammajang”, which means “in a disorderly state”. Another is the word for a swimming costume, “dookers” or “duckers”. It is used in Scotland.
The OED also might include the word “frog-drowner”, which Americans might use to describe a downpour of rain. Another possibility is “brick”. It means “very cold” used by people in New Jersey and New York City.
The dictionary has already found that, depending on location, a picture hanging off center might be described as “agley”. It might also be called “catawampous” or “ahoo”.
“The OED aims to cover all types of English, ” Maier said. That includes scientific words, slang and regional language. Maier also said that it can be difficult for the OED's editors to identify regional words. The terms are more often spoken than written down.
The appeal is called Words Where You Are. It is looking for more suggestions. “We were surprised and pleased by the number of regional words we were able to include, ” said Maier.
12. “Freezing” is closest in meaning to “___________”.
A. hammajang B. dookers C. brick D. ahoo
13. Which local word of the following is most likely from the United Kingdom?
A. Agley. B. Frog-drowner. C. Cuddy wifter. D. Brick.
14. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. It is challenging to create a complete collection of regional words.
B. People are not committed to responding to the appeal for regional words.
C. People use regional words only when they are home or with close friends.
D. Having an understanding of regional words can be helpful when communicating.
15. Which of the following can best summarize the main idea of the passage?
A. It's time to trace the source of local words.
B. The same English words can be used to say different things.
C. The OED aims to enlarge its collection to appeal to locals.
D. The OED will include more regional words from around the globe.

Should We Create More National Parks
to Save Endangered Animals?
Don’t you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real danger of becoming extinct? 16 And I think the best way to do this is for governments to create more national parks.
17 If this environment is destroyed—for example, when farmers clear a forest for new fields, or trees are cut down to make profits—many animals are unable to survive, and more species are likely to become extinct.
In addition, national parks protect animals from the danger of being hunted. A major reason why many species are endangered is that these animals are killed by hunters. They hunt animals to make money. 18
On the other hand, some people fight against the creation of national parks because they consider it is wrong to interfere with nature. They believe that wild animals are happier living in their natural environment. 19 They also point out that a few species are more likely to produce young animals in the wild than in national parks.
All in all, these disadvantages are far less important than the benefits of national parks. 20 As a matter of fact, they protect animals from their greatest enemies, that is, human beings.
A. To begin with, animals are important to humans.
B. Some hunters even hunt animals simply for sport.
C. I personally believe that we must save these animals.
D. These parks allow animals to live in a safe environment.
E. Firstly, national parks protect these animals’ natural environment.
F. They say though the animals may face danger, they enjoy a free life.
G. There is a heated discussion about whether to create more national parks.

The village was at the foot of a mountain, with beautiful views of the snowy mountain. The family survived on growing seasonal plants and trees. Their life was totally surrounded by nature and beauty.
While they lived a very happy life, Carol did not love the beautiful atmosphere of the village. She really wanted to move into the city and enjoy the city life. She wanted to shop, move around the city, watch movies, and eat in fantastic restaurants and cafes, etc.
However, there was hardly any chance that Carol’s family moved to the city as they had everything in the village.
One day, Carol fell asleep during the early noon and she had a sound sleep. Of course, she had a strange dream. She saw her grandmother in her dream as a fairy and her deceased grandmother granted her a wish. Carol requested her that she should love to enjoy the city life as she always desired.
Grandmother understood the desire of Carol, but still wanted to convince her that the peaceful village life is better than the city life.
She told Carol, “Baby, you cannot have access to fresh fruit and vegetables from plants as you have at your home. You cannot breathe fresh air. You cannot play with animals. You will not find peace as you see here! Do you still want to go to the city?”
Without hearing the concerns, Carol asked her grandmother to grant the wish. Grandmother granted her wish, but with a condition. Carol was told that she would only have 6 hours to spend in the city. Later, she would return to the village. Carol agreed.

第二节(满分25分)
Carol then found herself in the city with her friends. Carol and her friends went to watch movies. After that they ate delicious food in a restaurant and shopped in a huge mall. Carol was happy that she had the chance to experience the life in the city. Yet at the same time, she understood that everything told by her grandmother was true in the city. There was no peace and no silence; the city life was fast and rushing. The air quality is not satisfying. She could hardly find any animals.
Carol’s brother Rob was calling her for lunch and Carol woke up. She recalled what happened just now in her dream and realised that her life in the village with her family was far more wonderful than the city life. Carol understood that she was having a more joyful life. She shared her dream with her family while enjoying the fresh fruit and vegetables, and they laughed together. Carol also developed love for plants, animals and beautiful nature.
