Just then, I hear a weak sund in the distance. The sund gradually becmes luder, until I can identify it as an emergency vehicle appraching frm behind. What d we d? The bridge is packed. There’s n rm fr us t mve.
But I’m wrng. Every single car quickly, yet carefully, mves t the side. Withut thinking, I fllw suit. The lane remains pen fr a few secnds during which the ambulance flashes thrugh.
Afterward, every car mves back. We clse up the emergency lane, ready t cntinue ur patient wait. Back in my spt, I frget my tiredness and hunger. My anxiety is gne. I start reflecting upn what 300 fellw drivers and I just did.
Hw did we d that? Despite ur exhaustin, we cllectively decided t help the stranger wh needed the time mre desperately than we did. We drew n ur sympathy(同情心)and intelligence, requiring n directives.

A recent article in the New Yrk Times, “The Extrardinary Science f Addictive Junk Fd” by Michael Mss, shwed hw cmpanies use science t design fd that cnsumers will prefer. By adding mre salt, sugar, and fat, fd cmpanies design fd t make us want t eat mre and mre. Mss says peple have an addictin t junk fd because they are ften pwerless t resist it. Mss’s article mentins hw Kraft Lunchables were advertised n televisin t make kids feel as thugh they were in cntrl f their fd chices. The ads said, “All day, yu gtta d what they say… But lunchtime is all yurs.” Kraft, the cmpany that wns Lunchables, sld the idea f pwer t kids, and it wrked. Sales skyrcketed!
Children are an imprtant target fr cmpanies prducing junk fd and sda. Children wh eat and drink their prducts are mre likely t buy these same prducts when they grw up t be adults.
Many peple believe that rules shuld be enfrced t prtect children frm unhealthy fd advertisements. They argue that we shuld fllw the lead f cuntries like Nrway and Sweden, where it is illegal t advertise t children under the age f 12. Hwever, cmpanies that sell junk fd believe these rules incnvenience cnsumers and target the snack fd industry unfairly. Others say that advertisements are gd because they teach children abut new prducts and can help them becme critical cnsumers — peple wh think carefully abut the prducts they buy and use.

    A. Because cmpanies add salt, sugar and fat t the fd.
    B. Because peple ften smke r take drugs.
    C. Because peple are pwerful t resist it.
    D. Because cmpanies use science t design and advertise the fd.

    A. Kraft Lunchables succeeded by advertising.
    B. Kraft Lunchables were advertised n TV.
    C. Kraft Lunchables were nt ppular amng kids.

    10. What des the underlined wrd “critical” mean in the last paragraph?
    A. Extremely imprtant.B. Pssibly dangerus.
    C. Making careful judgments.D. Expressing disapprval.
    11. What’s the authr’s attitude twards advertising junk fd t children?
    A. Psitive.B. Objective.C. Negative.D. Indifferent.

Yu have tw basic types f memry: shrt-term memry and lng-term memry. Things yu see r hear first enter yur shrt-term memry. Very little f this infrmatin passes n int yur lng-term memry. Des this mean yu have a bad memry? Nt at all.
Yur shrt-term memry has a certain jb. Its jb is t stre infrmatin fr a few secnds nly. Yur shrt-term memry is at wrk when yu lk up a phne number, call the number, and then frget it. Yu remembered the number just lng enugh t use it. Then it disappeared frm yur memry. That’s really a gd thing. Imagine if yur memry held every number, every face, and every wrd yu ever knew!
Hwever, sme infrmatin is imprtant t remember fr a lnger time. Then it must pass frm shrt-term t lng-term memry. Smetimes we tell urselves t remember smething. We might als practice it: “OK, dn’t frget: 555-1212, 555-1212.” Usually, we dn’t even think abut it. Our brain makes the decisin fr us. It decides t stre the infrmatin r let it g.
The brain seems t make the decisin by asking tw questins:
Des the infrmatin affect ur emtins? That is, des it make us happy, sad, excited, r upset?
Des the infrmatin cncern smething we already knw, s ur brain can stre it with smething already there?
An answer f “Yes” means that the new infrmatin enters lng-term memry. That means the brain creates new cnnectins amng brain cells.
Infrmatin disappears when cnnectins amng brain cells becme weak. They get weak if time passes and the cnnectins are nt used. That’s why it is gd t read yur lecture ntes sn after the class. T keep the memry f smething strng, think f it ften. Fr example, lk at thse lecture ntes the next day. Lk at them the day after that, t. Every time yu think abut smething, the cnnectins in the brain get strnger. Then it is easier t remember the infrmatin when yu need it.
    12. When is yur shrt-term memry at wrk?
    A. Yu read English wrds every mrning.
    B. What yu’ve learned is reviewed after class.
    C. The impressin f a stranger sn disappears after yu meet with him/ her.
    D. Yu lk up an imprtant phne number and repeat it again and again.
    13. What infrmatin enters lng-term memry accrding t the passage?
    A. Infrmatin affecting ur emtins.
    B. Infrmatin creating brain cells.
    C. Infrmatin reaching yu first.
    D. Infrmatin cncerning smething unfamiliar.
    14. Hw can we keep the lng-term memry f lecture ntes strng?
    A. By lking at them after mnths.B. By referring t them regularly.
    C. By putting them away after class.D. By remembering them fr a lng time fr nly nce.
    15. Where is the passage prbably taken frm?
    A. A science fictin.B. A news stry.C. A bk review.D. A ppular magazine.
