Austrian-American actress Hedy Lamarr was the type of woman people love to comment. She was strikingly beautiful, with green eyes, black hair and full lips, which attracted the attention of Hollywood producers in the 1930s and 1940s. However, as Lamarr once said, “The brains of people are more interesting than the looks.” This rang true with her. She was one of the most prolific inventors of the 20th century, who yielded various inventions in her life. Despite the fame as a distinguished actress, Lamarr died with little money to her name, although she invented the technology that powers so much of our world today.
Lamarr was bom into a well-to-do family. Her father, a bank director and curious man, inspired her to look at the world with open eyes. He would discuss with her the inner-workings of different machines. These conversations guided Lamarr's thinking. Meanwhile, Lamarr's mother introduced her to the arts, placing her in both ballet and piano lessons.
Lamarr's beauty took center stage in Hollywood at age 16. Later, Lamarr was introduced to businessman and pilot Howard Hughes, who helped to fuel the innovator in Lamarr, giving her a small set of equipment to use in her trailer (活动房屋)on set. While she had an inventing table in her house, the small set allowed Lamarr to work on inventions between takes. She was indeed a genius. “Improving things comes naturally to me,“ she once said. Her mind was full of possibilities. She created an upgraded stoplight and a tablet that made a soda similar to Coca-Cola, and proposed the concept of spread spectrum (扩频)technology that makes Wi-Fi today possible.
The moment finally came. The Electronic Frontier Foundation awarded Lamarr with Pioneer Award in 1997. She also became the first woman to receive the Invention Convention's Bulbie Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award. Although she died in 2000, Lamarr was listed into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014. Such achievement has led Lamarr to be named the mother of Wi-Fi and other wireless communications like GPS and Bluetooth.
24. What does the underlined word “prolific“ in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Productive. B. Responsible. C. Optimistic. D. Beautiful.

Agriculture is one of the main drivers of Indonesia’s economy, employing more than 50 million people. But many farmers still identify as some of the poorest people in the country. All of that is changing with the help of advanced technology.
Wim Prihanto is the co-founder of the mobile application and website called RegoPantes. The app aims to change the lives to farmers working to make a good living. It works by removing middlemen (中间商)between farmers and the harvest they supply to markets. Farmers usually complain their harvest is always sold below cost when they go through several middlemen. But today, farmers have more power and all with the tap of a finger.” For popular commodities (商品), farmers usually have to go through 8 to 13 middlemen. Along the way the price decreases and income reduces for them. With this app, farmers can immediately post their produce and sell it to consumers , “ Prihanto says.
The app has also helped farmers to understand the market much better. They can learn how the market operates, what exactly customers are looking for, evaluate other prices in the market and understand what they can do to get better prices.
RegoPantes is not the only app that allows farmers to sell directly to customers. Many e-commerce websites in Indonesia have also enabled farmers to sell their produce to customers across provinces. Although they’re only able to sell in small volumes (量)for now, the price remains affordable and increasingly competitive. Through the e-commerce platforms, farmers in Central and East Java, for example, can serve customers in Jakarta's markets.
There is a huge potential for smart agriculture in Indonesia but it comes with challenges. Only less than 5 percent of farmers in the country are below 35 years old, many of whom still do not own a smartphone. Besides, in some smaller areas, there is no Internet, so it is difficult to be a part of digital farming. But those challenges can be overcome as smart agriculture can be beneficial to economy in the long run. It is already beginning to increase the productivity of agricultural companies and smallholder farmers.
28. What is RegoPantes designed for?
A. Bringing farmers more interests.
B. Making commodities more popular.
C. Managing the market better.
D. Increasing the farmers' harvest.
29. What can we learn from the text?
A. The more middlemen, the higher farmers' incomes.
B. Much more information is accessible to farmers with RegoPantes.
C. RegoPantes is the most useful app that benefits Indonesian farmers.
D. Farmers can develop customers worldwide through e-commerce websites.
30. Which should come first to promote Indonesia’s smart agriculture?
A. To build more e-commerce platforms.
B. To popularize the use of smartphones and Internet.
C. To adjust the prices of e-commerce apps.
D. To strengthen Internet security in smaller areas.
31. How does the author think of the future of Indonesia’s smart agriculture?
A. Promising. B. Uncertain. C. Smooth. D. Worrying.

David Ballesteros looked at the lawyer. He couldn't believe his ears.

The lawyer, Mr. Jarvin, put down the will (遗嘱),He felt sorry for David but he thought David's father had explained the terms of the will before he died. David remembered that his father just told him he'd be passing on his riches, but he never specified (明确)the amount —— that was what he was trying to find out!
Mr. Jarvin said carefully, “ David, no money at all. ” “ That's impossible! ” David screamed. His father owned clothing factories all over the United States. He was rich! Mr. Jarvin explained that all the money was donated to charity under the terms of his father's will.
David was in shock. He'd lived a life of wealth and now he was left with nothing but an old sewing machine! Mr. Jarvin said to David that his father left him a letter which might explain his decision. David grabbed the envelope. His father s decision was to leave him a poor man! What kind of explanation could he possibly have for that! He drove back to his apartment just in time to see a truck pull up.
“Mr. David Ballesteros asked the man from the truck. “Yes," David said. "We have a delivery for you, sir. " He gestured to the old sewing machine. "Where would you like it?” David was about to scream “ In the garbage!” but it occurred to him that the old item might be worth some money, so he ordered the man to take it up to his apartment. After the man left, David poured himself a drink and looked at the sewing machine. " I have an MBA. I'm prepared to run companies. What am I supposed to do with a sewing machine, Dad?” he asked aloud. 注意:

Text 2
W : Did you go home directly after school today?
M : No. Mum couldn't pick us up because she was at work.
W : Where did you go?
M : We caught the bus and went to the park and then walked home.
Text 3
W : rd better be going. See you later.
M : It might be a while before we run into each other again. I'm going to Puerto Rico for three months starting next Tuesday. I've got a job there for the summer.
Text 4
W : Honey, have you finished your work? Do you want to go out for a walk together?
M : Yeah, that would be great, if you don't mind waiting until I've finished sending this email.
Text 5
M : What's the cost of a room for one night?
W : It's $ 200. But there is a discount of 20% if you have a VIP card. Do you have one?
M : Yes, I do.
Text 6
W : John, wake up! I thought I heard a sound. Did you bring the cat in the house last night?
M : Oh, I didn't. It slept in her cage outside. Do you think our neighbor let their dog outside, too?
W : Yes, they always do that. Honey, did you lock all the doors?
M : Yes, I did. They were all locked before I came upstairs to bed.
W : Maybe the wind blew a window open.
M : I’ll go and check… Oh, it did.
Text 7
M : Hello, is this Joe's Shoe Repair?
W : Yes, how can I help you?
M : I'm calling to find out your business hours.
W : Usually we're open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, seven days a week.
M : If I bring a pair of shoes to be fixed today, when will they be ready?
W : Normally, it will be in three or four days, but not this week.
M : Why?
W : We're closed till this Friday for decoration.
M : What if I bring them next week?
W : That's not good, either. We will have a holiday and we're closed from Monday to Thursday.
M : OK. I will wait then.
Text 8
W : Mike, may I borrow your cellphone to call my mother after we finish lunch? Mine was dead when I played games on it just now.
M : Of course, Mary. Don't forget to inform her that you're going to the movies with me.
W : Sure. Could you pass the pepper?
M : Here you are. Would you mind if I stop by the bookstore on our way to the cinema?
W : No, not at all.
M : Good. I'm dying to read some new books.
W : You are really a book lover.
M : That's true. Reading books can make me wise. Oh, I ordered too many French fries. I should have ordered a steak only. Would you care for some?
W : OK. And would you like some of my green salad?
M : Yes, please. Just a little.
Text 9
W : Look at the boy. It seems he gets along very well with his dog.
M : Yes. That's Henry. The dog is his best friend.
W : So has he kept the dog for long?
M : He got the dog when he was just seven years old. He's kept it for two years.
W : Where did he get the dog? Was it a gift?
M : No. Before Henry got Wiggie, his family had had three beloved dogs, but they all had come to the end of their very long lives. What was worse, his beloved grandma had died of a horrible illness. It was a horrible time for Henry. One day, while at the shelter, Henry was asked to help a new dog who had been rescued from the Central Valley. The dog looked very lonely. Henry
immediately decided to take it home. But there was a problem.
W : What was the matter?
M : The dog was sick. But Henry didn’t mind it. He took it home. He fed him, gave him his medicine, slowly walked him, and held him close at night. Slowly but surely the dog learned to trust and listen to the boy.
W : I'm really moved.
