While many people aren't getting enough calcium (钙), new research cautions that some people may have the opposite problem: they could be getting too much. Americans spend more than $1 billion a year on calcium supplements in hopes of delaying osteoporosis, a kind of bone disease that disables many elderly women and some men. Yet recent studies link calcium supplements to a higher risk of heart attacks. Last month, the U. S. Preventive Services Task Force issued a draft recommendation against taking calcium and vitamin D, saying there wasn't enough evidence of benefit to justify the risk.
For generations of Americans who grew up encouraged to drink milk to maintain strong bones, the reports raised troubling questions: Is calcium not so important after all? Are the supplements unsafe? And how much is too much? “It's gotten very confusing but it doesn't need to be, "says Ethel Siris, director of the Toni Stabile Osteoporosis Center in New York. How much calcium people need varies by age and gender. "Adults generally need 1, 000 mg daily, rising to 1, 200 mg for women over 50 and men over 70, according to guidelines issued in 2010. Children need 1, 300 mg daily during the peak growing years of 9 to 18. "
People also need sufficient levels of vitmin D to absorb the calcium. The IOM recommends 600 international units a day for most adults, and 800 daily after age 70, although many physicians recommend more. It is difficult to take in that much vitamin D from food sources, so experts say many people should take vitamin D in supplement form.
Getting adequate calcium from food is easier. For example, 8 ounces of milk or 6 ounces of yogurt has 300 mg of calcium, and one cup of spinach has 270 mg.
But studies linking calcium supplements to heart attack have made experts more cautious of excess calcium than before. A study of 24, 000 Germans published in the journal Heart last month, found that those who got their calcium exclusively from supplements were more than twice as likely to have a heart attack as those who took no supplements.
Exactly how calcium supplements might contribute to heart attacks baffles experts.
"Nobody has associated the calcium in your bloodstream with calcification(钙化)in your arteries(动脉), ”says Nieca Goldberg, medical director of the Joan H. Tisch Center. Still, she says she now urges patients get their recommended calcium from food rather than from supplements to avoid possible problems.
Osteoporosis experts also urge patients not to take more than the recommended amount of calcium. “People should definitely stop taking two big calcium supplements a day, ” says Dr. Dawson-Hughes. Even if the risks remain unclear, taking more than the body can absorb doesn't benefit bones, ” so it's not worth any risk. ” She adds.
24. According to the new studies, what might be the result of taking much calcium?
A. Delaying aging. B. Building muscles.
C. Causing heart problems. D. Curing bone diseases.
25. What is Ethel Siris' opinion on taking calcium supplements?
A. Taking calcium supplements is unsafe.
B. Adults need more calcium than children.
C. It is much safer to take calcium from food.
D. Age and gender determine the amount of calcium taken.

Chinese volleyball superstar Zhu Ting has inspired a new English word. “Stay awesome and ZHUperb!" wrote a blogger at Volleywood, a US-based volleyball website. The word combines“Zhu” and “superb” to describe the 24-year-old player's leadership skills.
Zhu's prolific(多产的)scoring performances put her among the Top 10 Global Outstanding Athletes for 2019 Heracles Prize of the Big Ben Award. As captain of the Chinese women's national volleyball team, Zhu has “created the new golden age of women's volleyball in China, ” the award said.
Although she's a superstar now, it hasn't been easy for Zhu to get to where she is. Born to a farming family in Henan province, Zhu earned a chance to attend a local sports school at age 13. With her father's encouragement, she made steady progress and quickly moved up, from the provincial youth team to the national youth team.
She rose to fame by helping China's U20 team win the 2013 FIVB U20 World Championship. Shortly after, Zhu joined the national team and began playing under legendary coach Lang Ping. At first, the 1. 98-meter-tall Zhu found it difficult to move quickly and stay balanced. But Lang took advantage of her height and trained her to jump high and smash balls. Her work paid off. Zhu is now an outstanding spiker(主攻手).
Today, Zhu treats her height as an aspect of her physical strength. And she still works up a sweat during training. “Hard work and talent are equally important. I'll move forward step by step, ” she told People's Daily.
28. Zhu is referred to as“ZHUperb" because she is ___.
A. tall in height B. gifted in volleyball
C. an outstanding spiker
D. a powerful leader
29. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. Zhu learned a lot from Lang Ping.
B. Zhu became a spiker by accident.
C. Zhu attained the fame in national team.
D. Zhu made efforts to move flexibly.
30. What's the purpose of the passage?
A. To inspire us to play volleyball.
B. To explain Zhu's nickname.
C. To introduce a sports superstar.
D. To encourage us to work hard.
31. Which word can describe Zhu's character best?
A. Open-minded. B. Determined. C. Outgoing. D. Considerate.
D
There are many ways for diseases to spread. A sick person can cough or sneeze on someone nearby, or they can spread germs through a handshake. But sometimes we pick up germs indirectly. A sick person might leave behind bacteria or viruses when they touch a door handle, for example. But what if those surfaces could clean themselves?
Two teenagers from Hong Kong asked themselves the same question. Now they've developed a door handle that can kill germs on contact.
The idea is simple. Every time the door is opened, the movement creates power that starts a germ-killing reaction on the handle. In lab tests, their system killed about 99. 8 percent of the germs that they spread onto lab dishes covered with their material.
Research by others has shown that door handles in public areas are often home to lots of bacteria and viruses, notes 17-year-old Sum Ming(“Simon")Wong. He and his schoolmate Kin Pong(Michael) Li, 18, wanted to design a covering for door handles that would kill germs.
After doing some research, they learned that a mineral called titanium dioxide is known to kill bacteria. It's already used in many products, from paints to desserts. To make their covering, the teenagers made the mineral into a very fine powder.
Titanium dioxide kills bacteria best when lit by ultraviolet light, says Simon. UV light is found in sunlight. But UV light does not naturally shine on indoor handles or any used at night, so the teenagers light their door handle from within.
To make sure the light reaches the coated surface, the teenagers made their door handle out of clear glass. Each end fits into a bracket. Inside one of the brackets is a strong light-emitting diode(LED). From it comes UV light.
And here's the interesting part: The power that makes the UV light shine comes from opening and closing the door. The power from the door is then carried by wire to the LED inside the door handle.
The door handle system, Michael and Simon say, might cost no more than about $13(about 81 yuan) to build.
32. The ways diseases spread are mentioned at the beginning of the text to ___
A. explain how most diseases are spread directly
B. explain how to kill bacteria or viruses effectively
C. introduce a new invention that can kill germs
D. remind readers of the importance of cleaning their hands
33. Michael and Simon's door handle ___
A. is too expensive for ordinary families
B. works better at night than in the daytime
C. is powered by the movement of its users
D. is made of a metal that can take in UV light
34. The LED is placed inside the brackets to ___
A. produce titanium dioxide to kill bacteria
B. supply enough power to the handle system
C. direct the UV light in sunlight to the coated surface
D. provide UV light to help titanium dioxide work better
35. What is the author's attitude toward Michael and Simon's door handle system?
A. Careful B. Negative C. Disappointed D. Supportive

Suzie wanted to go to a party. It was a beach party. It had been almost the only thing her friends had been talking about for the last couple of weeks. It was going to be the best party of the year, perhaps the best party of her life.
But there was a problem. . . and a big problem. Her mom had said no. Suzie was desperate, and the more desperately she pleaded her case, the more emphatically her mom said no. Suzie was disappointed. No, worse than that, she was heartbroken1. This was her best friend's party. How could she tell her that her mom wouldn't let her go? She'd look silly if she was the only one not there. The other kids were bound to laugh at her. They might even dump her as a friend if she didn't join in and participate in1 what they were doing.
Sunday dinner came around and Suzie's Grandma joined the family for the meal, as she nearly always did on Sunday. Grandma noticed how unhappy Suzie had been looking during the meal but didn't say a thing. It was Suzie's turn to wash up and Grandma said, “Let me help you, " while the rest of the family shifted into the living room to watch a video.
“What's up?” asked Grandma as Suzie dumped the dishes into water. Grandma wiped a plate with a tea towel.
“Mom won't let me go to my best friend's party, ” said Suzie, sadly. “Has Mom explained why she doesn't want you to go?" asked Grandma. "No, ”replied Suzie.
“Then for a moment, put yourself in her position, ” said Grandma. “If you were Mom, what would your objections be?”
Suzie hadn't stopped to think about her mom's side. All she had seen was what she wanted. “Well, ” she answered after thinking for a moment or two, "it's a beach party. Maybe she doesn't trust us or thinks we'll get into trouble. Maybe she thinks we'll drown or something, but we all know how to swim and look after ourselves. ”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After further discussion, Suzie realised that her mom might be concerned about her
