Getting lost in the rhythm of my turns was one of my favorite parts of skiing. Feeling the soft, powdery
snow beneath my skis, I feel like I’m capable of anything.
I started skiing when I was three years old. My mom worked as a ski instructor as she also loved the snow. I
soon mastered the basic concepts of turning. When I was seven, I decided I wanted to take my skiing to the next level and
    join a team.
There were two options: racing, a popular event for girls, and free skiing, an event heavily dominated by boys. Riding
the chairlift (升降椅) with my mother, I would see free skiers flying and spinning through the air. I immediately knew
which team I wanted to join: free skiing.
As soon as I joined the team, I was placed in a low level. However, I soon mounted the rankings until I came to the
highest group. At that point, I was the only girl on my team. I was isolated at first; I was put down at first; nobody wanted to
ride the chairlift with me. But as time passed, I was slowly accepted, and made some of my closest friends. However, this
entire process took three whole years.
I have been fortunate enough to have competed in three national championships competitions for freeskiing,
winning two overall first places and one overall second place.Although being a girl in a male-dominated sport
can be difficult, I’m actually thankful that I’ve had the experiences that I had.
Life is going to be a bumpy (凹凸不平的)road for all of us, and building resiliency(适应力) early on is important. My
experiences have taught me to meet my setbacks in life with open arms. In fact, after this encounter, I’ve become a better
skier. However, there is no way that I could have done it without my supportive mother always behind me and my
encouraging coach always, always behind me as well. I encourage you all to step out of your comfort zone to show the boys
that girls are just as powerful as they are.
    24. The author finally took up her favorite free skiing because
    .
    A.
    B.
    C.
    D.
it was suitable for girls like her.
no girls were available in the event so she intended to change it.
she was attracted by free skiers while riding the chairlift.
her mother made the choice for her.
    25. Which can best explain the underlined word “mounted” in paragraph 3?
    A . climbed up B. fell off C.put down D. turned down
    26. What can we know about the author according to the passage?
    A.
    B.
    C.
    D.
The life the author ran across was tougher.
The author gained the achievement largely on her own.
What the author did resulted in the equality between boys and girls.
Her story proved a Chinese saying that women hold up half the world.
    27. What do you think of the author’s story of becoming a skier?
    A.
    Boring
    B. Unreal
    C.
    Inspiring
    D. Discouraging

Go anywhere and you’ll see a lot of people with their heads buried in their phones. And among them there may be
“nomophobia,” or no-mobile-phone phobia, which means that people are afraid of being away from your phone. And this
one can do real damage to your quality of life and health.
A 2020 study published in the journal Sleep found that 90 percent of the 327 university students surveyed could be
seen as having moderate to severe nomophobia. Unfortunately, nomophobia was associated with sleep disruption, and
    daytime sleepiness.
Participants admitted to checking e-mail, texts, or social media after turning off their lights to go to bed, explains
Jennifer Peszka, PhD, study co-author and associate professor of psychology at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. For
you, that might look like a lot of things: It might be catching up on social media in bed, waking up to check your phone in
the middle-of-the-night, or keeping notifications on while you sleep.
Ever get that butterflies-in-the-stomach feeling when you can’t remember where you placed your phone? Or, maybe
you have stress dreams that your phone is lost or stolen. “I think you can really view nomophobia as a special form of
anxiety,” says Peszka. The reasons behind why someone has nomophobia are variable. “I think different people worry about
different things. There are some people who seem to report they’re worried they will miss out on something or that they
won’t be able to get help or contact someone if they need to,” she explains.
Peszka recommends cognitive-behavioral(认知行为的 ) ways that can help make parting with your phone a bit easier
at night. If you can’t put your phone away or sleep with it out of your room, then use settings on your phone that limit your
use but don’t prohibit it completely.
    28. What does the underlined word “phobia” in Paragraph 1 mean?
    A. Disease.
    B. Fear.
    C. Excitement.
    D. Situation.
    29. How many students surveyed are free of nomophobia?
    A. About 33.
    B. About 90.
    C. About 294.
    D. About 327.
    30. What’s the performance of having nomophobia?
    A. Checking e-mails when necessary.
    B. Turning off the phone.
    C. Catching up on Wechat in bed.
    D. Waking up in the morning and then checking phones.
    31. Which of the following is Peszka’s recommendation to make parting with phones?
    A. Sleeping with phones.
    B. Throwing away phones.
    C. Using settings of phones.
    D. Prohibiting phones completely.

After taking a few steps back to get a running start, Hadj Benhalima dashed toward the building, pushed against its
wall with his foot, pushed himself upward and stretched out his arm.
At the peak of his leap, he fingered off a light switch, more than 10 feet off the ground. The bright lights of a nearby
    barbershop went off instantly.

big French cities switching off wasteful shop signs at night, in an effort to fight light pollution and save energy.
These so-called Light Off operations have become extra popular in recent months, with France embarking on energy
    conservation efforts.
Paris, the City of Light, is a favorite target. While its landmark monuments now go dark earlier than usual, many store
signs still stay lit all night.
“Everyone can contribute in their own way” to save energy, said Kevin Ha, the leader of the Paris—based Op he Spot
Parkour group, with about 20 members. “We put our physical abilities to good use.”
Enforcing the orders in place of the authorities certainly enters a legal gray area, but the group said all the police

    A. It doesn’t need any tools to assist movement.
    B. It can only be practiced in an enclosed environment.

    34. What does Kevin Ha think of the Parkour participants?
    A. They are honest.
    B. They are creative.
    C. They are selfish.
    D. They are optimistic.
    35. How did the police react to the Light Off operations of the young?
    A. They gave their unspoken agreement.
    B. They took these actions as illegal.
    C. They believed there must be damage caused.
    D. They held an indifferent attitude towards them.

There have been several incidents at concerts and other events in recent years where people died because of unsafe
crowd conditions and stampedes(踩踏). The latest similar tragedy unfolded in Seoul, South Korea, where a Halloween
gathering in a club district turned deadly, with at least 155 deaths being reported.
This may leave some people thinking there’s little you can do to survive a stampede. But crowd—safety experts say
there are several strategies that could help you avoid such danger.
    36
◆ Pay attention to the exit
The key to staying safe in a crowd begins the moment you arrive at the location, says Randy I. Atlas, a safety expert.
It’s a piece of common—sense advice that Atlas applies not just to big events, but even when entering almost any

    38
If there’s a sudden panic and crowds begin to push in a certain direction, do not fight back or push the opposite way,
Instead, move in the same direction of the crowd. If you go against the law, you increase your chances of getting tripped and
knocked down. Another risk is, according to experts: if you fight the crowd, you will tire yourself out quickly.
    ◆ Figure the “WAY” out.
    39
Therefore you can potentially angle(斜移)your way out of the situation, experts say. The goal, according to
writer Patrick Hutchison, is to get to “the edge of the stampede where it’s less likely that you’ll end up stuck at a chokepoint,
    like a doorway.”
    ◆ Mind the posture.
In many stampede events, people die from asphyxiation(窒息)—
    40
. But a possible way to avoid this is to place
your arms in front of you, almost in a boxer—like stance(站立姿势). That could give you some very valuable breathing
room and protect your chest. Sometimes, Ending the right posture can make all the difference.
    A. Go with the crowd.
    B. Don’t panic and take immediate action.

It was such a nice day and it’s Sunday. I left for the park with my skateboard. There were so many kids in the central
square. The parents chatted merrily in small groups, occasionally taking a glance at their kids. I skated for about half an
hour and took a break on the nearby bench. Early summer morning was always the best time, the bird chirping in the trees

he? It’s Sunday and he is not here for fun?” I talked to myself. I went on skating and forgot about him.
Time went fast and the sun was already high up in the sky. It was getting hot and I was tired. I was ready to go when I

effort. Time and time again, he stopped to straighten his body but he showed no sign of leaving soon. Clearly, it was hard
work for people of his a age.
“Not to leave? What if he has no water left in such hot weather?” I wondered.
With some hesitation, I walked toward him.____________________________________________________________
