I suddenly heard an elephant crying as though frightened. Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Shwe with her three-month-old calf struggling in the fast-rising water, and it was a life-and-death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Shwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away. There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mother's body and was gone. Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk(象鼻) against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.
Just at this moment, she went back into the river. If she were carried down, it would be certain death. I knew, as well as she did, that there was one spot(地点) where she could get to the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf. While I was wondering what I could do next, I heard the sound of a mother's love. Ma Shwe had crossed the river and got to the bank and was making her way back as fast as she could, roaring(吼叫) all the time, but to her calf it was music.

    C. It was a call for help. D. It was a great comfort.

    What Is Social Media?
Not many people ask the question "What is social media?" anymore. Social media has been around for years now, and most of us would probably describe it as any Internet medium that can be used to share information with others, including blogs, forums, applications, games, websites and other stuff.
But let me ask you this: what exactly is so "social" about sitting before a computer setting up a blog and blogging for days without anybody reading it, or scrolling through your Facebook feed of information from 500 friends you barely know? If you ask me, it can be way more antisocial than anything.
Social media is not a "thing". It's not just Facebook, WeChat and Weibo. It's more of a frame of mind and a state of being. It's about how you use it to improve your relationships with other people in real life. However, we tend to rely on technology and social media so much that it can actually tear apart those relationships.
Social media isn't about numbers. When someone says "social media", web giants like Facebook, Twitter, WeChat and Weibo instantly pop into our minds, often because they have more updates, more friends, more followers, more links, more photos and more everything. We tend to get distracted by the number game, thinking "volume, volume, volume". It leads to a lot of meaningless noise and information overload. As the old saying goes, quality over quantity is usually the way to go. So, social media is not just about lots of people aimlessly spreading lots of information.
Social media needs to have an "IRL" factor—an Internet slang standing for "In Real Life". It should affect how a person thinks or acts offline. After all, social media shouldn't be an end in itself. It was built to enhance your actual social life, in real life. Take for example an event that a person attends because he is invited by the host on Facebook through a Facebook event page. Something like that definitely has the IRL factor. Likewise, a WeChat photo that touches someone so much that they feel the need to bring it up and describe it to someone else during a dinner date also has the IRL factor.
So, is it really considered to be social to spend an hour scrolling through photos on Weibo, with no thoughtful or emotional effect and no interaction with others? In fact, there is no wall between real life and Internet life where true social media exists. Social media is not a specific place on the Internet or just a thing you use to see what other people are doing. It's all about creating meaningful experiences and relationships wherever you may be.
4.What does the underlined phrase "tear apart" in Paragraph 3 mean in the text?
    A.Destroy.
    B.Change.
    C.Continue.
    D. Strengthen.
5.The writer thinks that social media should be _______.
A.a number of websites where people communicate
B.a set of social tools like Facebook, WeChat and Weibo
C.a collection of online applications where ideas are exchanged
D.a group name for online platforms used to strengthen meaningful relationships
6.According to the author, which of the following cases has an IRL factor?
A.Updating Facebook on a regular basis.
B.Following new friends in real life on Facebook.
C.Visiting a museum with friends after reading a story on Weibo.
D.Reading Twitter to see what other people are doing and thinking about.
7.What is the authors purpose of writing this article?
A.To explain the importance of social media.
B.To inform the negative effects of social media.
C.To call on readers to use social media to promote real social life.
D.To encourage readers to interact with others in real life more often.

Benito Juarez, a poor Indian boy, was twelve years old when he left his village home in December 1818. Benito walked forty-one miles to the city of Oaxaca, high in the mountains of Mexico. When he heard the Spanish spoken by the city people, Benito didn't know what they were saying.

Last night my husband and I were taking a post-dinner walk in a nearby parking lot, when we saw a man bent over on the ground, crushing(压碎) something with a rock. He was completely focused on his task and didn't look up at anyone passing by. We kept noticing him as we walked around the parking lot and talked between ourselves about what he might be doing. I thought he was breaking stones to make sand, but why would he do that?
Finally we decided to go up and speak to him. He was crushing pieces of leftover bread that he had collected from all his housemates to make food for the birds that came there every morning. The large pieces of bread would be difficult for the birds to eat so he crushed them into a fine powder.
He's been doing this every night, by himself, for the last 3—4 years. What moved us more was that he was surprised we were even taking an interest in this, since for him it wasn't a big deal. Every night, after reaching his single room from his job as a tailor, he goes around the villa(别墅) collecting leftover bread from all his housemates. He then eats a quick meal and comes here, and spends the next 1—2 hours, carefully crushing each piece and makes a pile for the birds, which he says will be gone by next evening. He also leaves fresh water and adds rice on top of the pile, which he buys every month from his wages.
When we asked him why he did this small and simple act of service, he shrugged his shoulders and said, "It's just something small I do; so that the leftover bread doesn't go into the trash and the birds get food."
We shared his story with the hope that it might remind us to be as mindful of leftovers too and perhaps it might inspire someone to start something similar in their own area.
12.The man didn't notice the author and her husband because ________.
A.he didn't want to get to know them
B.he didn't like greeting the strangers
C.he fixed his energy on what he was doing
D.he liked seeing the people in the parking lot
13.Why did the man make the bread into pieces?
A.Because he wanted to attract others.
B.Because he liked making such bread.
C.Because the bread is too bad to eat.
D.Because the bread is too large for the birds to eat.
14.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.An unusual experience of a tailor.
B.A surprising event and an imaginary person.
C.How the man found the birds coming here.
D.How the man collected and made food for the birds.
15.What can we learn from the man's story?
A.The man is an honest person.
B.The man is a kind and loving person.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Out of a 13-year-old girl's summer boredom, I put up a tent in our yard and intended to sleep in it. It was midnight and my dad had been asleep upstairs. A girl knocked on the front door, asking if she could use our phone to call her parents.
I watched her struggle to dial the numbers. After she dialed the wrong numbers several times, I offered to do that for her. But after I dialed several times, there still no people answered the phone. Looking at the girl, I said, "Want to sleep in my tent?" She hesitated for a while and agreed.
I accompanied her into the darkness of the yard, entered the tent, and turned my lantern on. She told me how she got here. She and her parents had a nice dinner. After dinner, she expressed she wanted a beautiful dress in a special style, but it was too expressive for her parents. They argued fiercely(激烈地)and she left in anger. She wandered alone aimlessly(漫无目的地)until she found herself on an unfamiliar road. Her cellphone was in her parent's bag and she seemed to have got lost. She wiped her eyes with my pillow, looked at me sadly, and then said, "Why didn't my parents buy that dress for me?"
I knew just nodding obviously couldn't solve the problem. "Do you think your parents love you?" I asked. Hearing my questions, she nodded and said regretfully, "My parents always meet my request as far as possible. This is my fault to ask them to buy that dress which they can't afford(支付). " At the time, my phone rang. It turned out her parents' call. Her parents sounded very worried and said they would come very soon. Then, my dad walked down the stairs.
I explained what had happened and he asked the girl, "Do you want that dress?"

    第三部分 写作
    第一节
    答案:
    Dear Peter,
I am so delighted to have received your letter. You asked me in your last letter about the physical exercise in our school and the following information may give you some help.
To my great joy, a famous new stadium has been put up, which has become the landmark in our school. Besides, with the stadium built, a wide range of sports activities can be carried out, of which table tennis, football and running competitions enjoy great popularity. I am particularly fond of basketball because it has been giving me strength to confront the challenge in my life.
Finally, I sincerely invite you to visit our school and join in the sports we both like.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    第二节
    答案:
I explained what happened and he asked the girl, "Do you want that dress?" "I owned a clothes factory. I can let our designers make that dress you want for you at a low cost," my father said with a smile. "Just tell me what style you want and your address. I'll post it to you after it's finished".
At that time, her parents came. When her parents saw their daughter, they were so happy and said they were sorry for refusing to buy that dress. The girl said she was also sorry for not considering their financial situation. Then her parents said they would buy that special dress for her as her birthday gift. The girl said, "My friend's father also promised me to make that dress for me, but I now don't want that dress. I know we should do things within our reach and don't take other's love for granted."
