It used to be mostly the military that used small, unpiloted aircraft, called “drones”. The little planes were very costly. But as they have dropped in price more people have begun to use them. Rescue workers and farmers are among the new users.
The fast rate of the development of computer technology, image sensing devices, satellite navigation (卫星导航) and smartphones has led to lower-priced drones. Researchers and developers have learned how to build smaller and less-costly drones. Moviemakers are using drones to film from the sky. Historians use them when they explore ancient buildings. Rescue workers use them to look for people. And now farmers are using them to monitor their crops.
Romain Faroux is a French businessman who starts companies. His father was a farmer. He believed drones could help farmers. He helped create a company that developed a small drone that could be controlled by people on the ground. They called it “Agridrone”. It uses a special “optical sensor (光学传感器)” to examine crops. The technology used is similar to that used by smartphones—except it has wings. A computer program directs the drone to fly over the crops. The sensor on the drone records four different-colored “bands”of sunlight that are reflected off the crops.
Jean-Baptiste Bruggeman is a farmer. He says the drone flies over his crops at different times of the season. This provides a lot of information about his crops. The drone pictures show him the exact amount of fertilizer the crops need. It also shows exactly where the fertilizer is needed.
Romain Faroux says farmers use information collected by the Agridrone to place fertilizer only in areas where it is needed. This saves money and reduces pollution. Before they used the drones, farmers would put the same amount of fertilizer everywhere. Drones also save time because farmers can examine up to three hectare (公顷) in about a minute.
1、Why do rescue workers and farmers begin to use drones?
A. Drones can monitor their cattle.
B. Drones’ prices have dropped.
C. Drones can help them get more business.
D. Drones’ sizes become smaller.
2、What can the drones developed by Romain Farour’s company do?
A. Explore ancient buildings. B. Put fertilizer on the crops.
C. Help farmers examine their crops. D. Help rescue workers look for people.
3、What can the sensor on the drone do?
A. Help the sunlight shine on the crops.
B. Direct the plane to fly over the crops.
C. Examine the different colors of the crops.
D. Record the sunlight reflected off the crops.

Tree planting used to be regarded as an effective means of controlling climate change, because they effectively removes CO2 from the atmosphere. But it should be reconsidered because trees only hold onto carbon dioxide as long as they're alive. Once they die, trees decay (腐烂) and release that CO2 back.
Recent studies have found that trees around the world are growing faster than ever. Rising atmospheric CO2, mainly due to burning fossil (化石) fuels, is probably driving that rapid growth, said Roel Brienen, a forest ecologist of UK. High levels of this gas are increasing temperatures, which directly speeds tree growth in those areas, he added.
The faster trees grow, the faster they store carbon. However, it is known that fast-growing tree species, in general, live shorter lives than their slow-growing relatives.
In order to see whether the growth-lifespan trade-off (生长和寿命之间的权衡) is a universal phenomenon, Brienen and his colleagues analyzed over 210,000 individual tree ring records of 110 tree species from more than 70, 000 sites worldwide. "By measuring tree rings' widths, one can tell how fast trees grew, while counting rings provides information on tree ages and allows making inferences about trees' maximum lifespan," Brienen explained.
They found that, in almost all habitats and all sites, faster-growing tree species died younger than slow-growing species. Early on, it showed that "the forest could hold more carbon as the trees grew faster", Brienen reported. But after 20 years, these trees started dying and losing this extra carbon again. "We must understand that the only solution to bringing down CO2 levels is to stop releasing it into the atmosphere," said Brienen.
4、Why should we reconsider trees against climate change?
A. Because trees can remove CO2. B. Because dead trees release CO2.
C. Because trees can reduce CO2. D. Because trees can hold onto CO2.
5、Which is the direct reason for trees' faster growth than ever?
A. Rising temperatures. B. Larger storage of CO2.
C. Growing CO2 in the air. D. Wide use of fossil fuel.
6、How do Brienen and his colleagues tell how fast trees grew?
A. By measuring tree rings' widths. B. By counting tree rings' number.
C. By analyzing trees' length. D. By recording trees' lifespan.
7、What is the effective way to reduce CO2 levels according to Brienen?
A. Planting more trees. B. Making trees grow faster.
C. Banning CO2 release. D. Controlling climate change.

I was born in Karachị, Pakistan. After completing my bachelor's degree in MBBS, I got a scholarship in 2016 from China Scholarship Council to do a master’s in Neurosurgery at Southeast University Nanjing, China. I couldn't wait to start my postgraduate study in China. In my first year. I learned the Chinese language, and passed the HSK level 5. It helped me a lot as a volunteer during the COVID-19 pandemic(流行病).
In February 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic was on peak, the school chose me as a volunteer, which was a great honor for me. It was/challenging to decide whether I should stay here or go back home because my family forced me to return home. At that time, I thought I must stand out in this critical moment so I was handed a lot of responsibilities related to the students' daily needs.
Every day, I had to take an order from students for their dinners and brought food for them. Besides, I had to record their temperatures three times a day, for which the universities had given a thermometer(温度计) to them all. Sometimes if, a student felt sick, it was my responsibility to accompany him to the hospital. Also, I had to go to the supermarket to bring groceries for them for which I had to ask every individual the daily necessities they needed. I provided psychological assistance, emotional comfort, and counseling to them. As the pandemic was getting better, I must stay at the dormitory gate to ensure that the students were wearing masks, having the permission cards to go out, and request them to come back on time.
It has sharpened my skills in becoming in better fender and developed n sense of pride in contributing to community.

Leaving India for the United Kingdom to continue my research career, I felt more out of place than before. At work, I shied away from discussions, let alone putting forward my opinions. I was afraid my colleagues would see me through and realize how weak I really felt. Some mornings, just stepping out of my room and going into the lab seemed a challenging task.
That began to change after a quiet breakdown in the lab urged me to contact the university's mental health services. I was advised to attend a concert by a famous singer from my motherland. There I was in the packed concert hall, surrounded by strangers—all of us clapping and singing along to the familiar songs. It was a complete victory. I've changed a lot since then.
Soon, I planned a day trip to a picturesque city a few hours away. As I took pictures of the beautiful surroundings, and enjoyed a lemonade there, I realized nobody was really paying any attention to me. My confidence and self-recognition grew as I enjoyed more local day trips. My growing self-confidence carried over to work, where I started to speak up and put forward my opinions. I began to ask questions during departmental discussions.
So, when an important conference relevant to our research came around, I felt comfortable registering to attend on my own even if my colleagues weren't interested in it. Not only did I meet the speakers, but I also introduced myself to other attendees and industry representatives, chatting about their products. The experience inspired me to evaluate my own professional interests.
Since then, I have had confidence to move to other countries, enthusiastic about new opportunities. Traveling alone did not give me any magical power, but taught me that I have the competence to grow and succeed, just like everyone around me, and it helped me get rid of the self-doubt that used to hold me back.

I'm crazy about running. Sometimes the pain of running can have a magic influence on a runner. Throughout any given race, you are suffering. Your lungs feel like they're being squeezed(挤压) by something unseen. But it is in this pain that a great runner is created.
My first cross-country coach told me that every race is run with patience and determination. I've carried this advice with me for hundreds of miles. I especially remember the 5 miles of running in one race, where his words encouraged me a lot.
That day the weather was perfect. I and dozens of runners gathered at the starting line to do some last-minute preparations for the running. Then, we lined up and got ready to start. There was a brief moment before the gun gave a signal of running. In that moment of great stress, I determined to push myself to run as fast as possible, hoping to make my coach proud, who was waiting for me at the finish line. When the sound of "Bang" came up, we were off.
Running between runners, I managed to work my way up in the first 400 meters and passed many racers on my sides. But out of good sportsmanship, we each said a "good job" or "keep up" to every person we passed. Although we were competitors, running was a connection we all shared.
The first mile passed quickly in a feeling of excitement. It was not challenging in the beginning of the running. But I knew it would be harder and harder in the following miles. I made full use of the running skills that my coach had taught me. I checked that I was doing everything right, breathing in through my nose, keeping my hands relaxed and pumping (快速摆动) my arms. However, the shadow of tiredness danced before me. Anyway I tried to push it out of my mind.
With time going by, the competition became fiercer. Every runner tried their best to run in order to gain a good place in the race. Audience along the track shouted and cheered us.

故填which。
in particular特别。故填in。
故填more serious。
故填however。
故填to protect。
We had the first heavy snow last month, which became potential dangers to the majority of students. Our monitor organized us to remove snow on campus before class. As planned, some students used spades, removing the snow around the teaching buildings, some using brooms near the school gate, and the others on the school paths. It took us half an hour to finish all the removal.
Tired though we felt, we were happy to help to ensure the safety of teachers and students. Importantly, not only did we realize the importance of labor, but we also learned to respect all laborers.

Eventually I reached the final mile. It was then that I felt extremely tired and sweat fell down my face. Many runners in the race had fallen behind, but I refused to be one of them. Instead, I chose to pump my legs a little faster and push myself a little harder. As the last half mile was near, the number of people along the track increased. Around the next corner, I could see my coach waving to me in great excitement. I tried to run faster.
Unfortunately, I suddenly fell down. I felt great pain and discouraged. Just at that moment, the audience shouted, "Come on, girl!” "Watch out!” "Keep up!” Meanwhile, a runner behind me came to me and gave me a lift. I was really grateful and encouraged. I stood up and ran for the final 400 meters. When I finally sailed over the finish line, I nearly cried with relief. I won the third place in the race. My coach was proud of me and I felt great too.
