Born with a heart defect缺陷called dextrocardia 右位心, Luna has had three open-heart operations and continues to pursue her interests in art and fashion. But when Luna was approached by athletic shoe company Saucony to design a pair of shoes for sale across the country, it came as quite a surprise.

This is so incredible. I got to use my art and creativity for something new that I'd never thought I'd be able to design, Luna said. She is one of the six patients from Boston Children's Hospital BCH who have partnered Saucony to design their own shoes to launch the Shoes with Soul campaign.

"Rather than just a donation, we wanted to create an experience and a moment that would raise not only money, but also awareness to highlight all the amazing work that's being done at BCH, "says Chris, Saucony's vice president. "Specifically, we wanted to give some of the BCH kids an opportunity to share their story and their talents with the world.

Luna's design is fashion. On the tongue, they digitalized one of my drawings, and then at the bottom it's a really bright pink color, and on the inside, the sole of the shoe is actually another drawing I did of a sunset, "she said. "Thinking about kids everywhere around the world wearing my shoes is amazing. It blows my mind.

The income from the shoe sales will benefit the Boston Children's Hospital Cardiac Fitness Program, which encourages kids to find your possibilitythrough personalized exercise programs tailored for each individual patient's heart condition.

It feels really good to help people and it's really something I can relate to, "says Luna. "The advice I would give a kid or someone like me is 'Never give up'. There are a lot of kids out there with your condition and you're not alone.

For more than a decade, a team of researchers have studied the dynamics of the Greenland Ice Sheet as it responds to a warming climate. But while much of their focus has been on waters impacts on ice sheet change, their most recent research findings have overturned the order of their thinking. Meierbachtol, Harper and their team discovered that changes in the ice sheet have a real impact on the massive groundwater system underlying Greenland.

This latest discovery occurred thanks to a marriage of drilling techniques. International cooperators made an angled hole 650 meters through bedrock underneath a Greenland glacier冰川to measure groundwater conditions under the ice. Meanwhile, researchers drilled 32 holes from atop the glacier, through nearly a kilometer of ice, to measure water conditions at the area between ice and bedrock, which forms an important boundary controlling groundwater flow below. After drilling, the team1 fixed sensors in the ice column and at the ice sheet bed to measure ice dynamics and water conditions as water flows under the ice.

"By studying areas covered by ice 10, 000years ago, we have known that the huge mass and vast amounts of water from melting ice can impact the underlying groundwater, " Meierbachtol said. It's generally accepted that the groundwater is sleeping over decades to centuries and its response to ice sheet change is long: thousands of years. But what we've shown here is that it is immediate. "

This new understanding could have important subsequent effects on how Greenland's thinning impacts the Arctic. The thinning ice could reduce the rate of groundwater flow to the ocean, changing the water temperature and salinity盐度balance that is important for ocean circulation循环patterns. In thinking about the complex feedbacks from Greenland's ongoing change, we have really ignored the groundwater component, " Harper said.

    8. How do the researchers feel about the result of the recent study?

    A. Surprised.

    B. Doubtful.

    C. Satisfied.

    D. Disappointed.

    9. What contributes most to the new research about the Greenland Ice Sheet?

    A. Fixing sensors into ice sheet.

    B. Close international cooperation.

    C. A combination of two drilling approaches.

    D. Advanced rock drilling technology.

    10. What is a misunderstanding of the groundwater under glaciers?

    A. Its component is complex.

    B. It is inactive for a long time

    C. It has a very large volume.

    D. Its temperature is changeable.

    11. What does the text mainly talk about?

    A. Long-lasting effects of global warming on the arctic.

    B. Water impacts on the Greenland's permanent ice sheet.

    C. Newly discovered groundwater resources in Greenland.

    D. Greenland's groundwater changes with thinning ice sheet.

Boston wants to be smarter. The city has taken advantage of technologies to become more responsive to its residents' needs. But technology alone is not sufficient to make today's cities liveable. Boston has discovered that it also needs to reach the old-fashioned low-tech community and integrate that technology with city life.

Kris Carter rolled out Boston's smart city program in 2014. It started with an App that residents could download to report locations where sidewalks needed repair. The city sorted out those reports and ranked them in a database, which repair crews used to prioritize their work.

The system worked beautifully, except for one problem: most of the alerts came from wealthier neighborhoods, where the concentration of smartphone-equipped residents was highest. "The complaints from the App didn't always correlate with the greatest community need for repairs, "explains Carter.

Carter's group has moved away from the model common to many smart city initiatives of letting tech-savvy精通技术的residents drive the process. Instead, they run meetings to find out what problems people in different neighborhoods care about solving. When it came to sidewalks, Boston introduced a second method of collecting repair tips, hiring people to get out and walk the city's 1, 700 miles of sidewalks to take notes on their condition.

Whether using low-tech or high-tech approaches, says Carter, to stay smart, a city needs to continually reassess its options to spot opportunities to improve residents' lives. Take the sidewalk repair program, walking on the streets was proved a useful, if inefficient way to prioritize repair needs. But last year the group found that walkers' mobile phones could be tracked as they moved along the streets, and that data could be analyzed to identify sidewalk routes which are most often used by neighborhoods.

Combined with our other sidewalk information, that gave us an even better way to predict where faster repairs would do the most good, " says Carter, "We 're really always looking for whatever mix of approaches best solves the problem.

    12. What is the first paragraph mainly about?

    A. The citizens’ life.

    B. The city's reputation.

    C. The city's management.

    D. The benefits of technology.

    13. What problem did Kris Carter's team meet when carrying out their program?

    A. They faced many technical obstacles.

    B. They couldn’t serve all residents well.

    C. They were not supported by residents.

    D. They were annoyed by being short-staffed.

    14. Which of the following might Kris Carter most agree with?

    A. Mixing approaches for solving problems.

    B. Maximizing the benefits of technology.

    C. Giving full play to the power of residents.

    D. Letting tech companies be a leading role.

    15. What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Joint-effort in City Construction

    B. The Modernization of a City

    C. A Smart City:More Than Just Tech

    D. A City with Intelligent Facilities

It was in the 1930s, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us on her own in our small community of New Westminster, BC. My dad had drowned in Pitt Lake, five years ago.

Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would put a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because the bottom parts were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have "French toast" ready for us. Constant moving was typical for my family in those times. Rent was 25 dollars a month, but Mum couldnt pay it, and we knew we would be evicted驱逐 right after Christmas on the first of January.

Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five-dollar Christmas fund from social services. The inspector came to our house, and searched it from top to bottom to be sure we didn't have any food hidden away. When he didn't find any, he issued the cheque to Mum.

Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the 25 dollars to pay back rent, assuring all of us a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for Christmas.

Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas tree, cleaning snow, and doing part-time jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. Boots that werent patched补丁, boots with no cardboard in the soles. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch Top Genuine Pierre Paris and they had a price of 23 dollars.

Well, the big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. I was excited, as I hurried up the road to the shoe store, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized at our house, we had no lights, no decorations, nor any money for Christmas meals. I knew that we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas, and I felt sad.

As I continued walking. I began to reconsider my plan. I could picture Mum pacing up and down at home, feeling sorrowful that she couldn't afford us a promising Christmas. Peering through the glass of the shoe store, I still saw the beautiful boots appealing to me, but I turned back to the decoration store in a flash. I selected some colorful lights carefully and also bought a turkey. It began to snow on my way home, the flakes whirling in the cold wind. It was freezing cold, but I was filled with great rejoicing, my heart pounding rapidly.

With great excitement and tears, I knocked on the door of our house. Mum opened the door, Surprise! I yelled, waving the lights and turkey in my hands. Merry Christmas! Mum stiffened for seconds and her face lit up with pleasure. Mum was overwhelmingly touched with tears streaming down her cheeks. She embraced me tightly. In the small but cozy house, we shared the turkey and talked merrily. The smell of turkey bounced through the air, lights sparkling like jewels. It dawned on me that nothing is more blissful than being accompanied by our beloved ones.
