Since the age of 5, Laura Lee has had a strange habit — she collects cardboard toilet-paper roll(卷). She didn’t know this habit would one day become a recycling movement.
In 2018, Lee set up a goal to collect 1,000 kilograms of these rolls. She was then a 16-year-old student at Nanyang Girls High School in Singapore. Until February 2021, she had collected 860kg. She received an Ecofriend Award(奖) from the Singapore government.
Why did she choose toilet rolls? “They are convenient to collect and also one of the simplest forms of waste to recycle because they are made of only one material,” Lee told Singapore Today. “It’s more difficult to recycle pens because they are made up of too many different materials like iron and plastics, which require more steps to separate(分离).”
Lee made an agreement with the waste management company. The firm gave her money for every kilogram of toilet rolls. She organized “toilet roll challenges” in her school and worked with cleaners to collect used toilet rolls. She gave speeches about what she was doing at local schools. She also help to promote the importance of social causes(社会公益) through her Instagram Live series “On A Roll”.
One big challenge Lee faces is others’ doubting because of her young age. “I always have to show that I am serious and know about recycling,” she said. She will give away the money collected to the social groups that focus on public health.

The year couldn’t pass without Time’s 2021 Person of the Year. Since 1927, the magazine has given the title to someone it thinks has the most influence on people’s lives over the past year.
On Dec. 13, Time gave this year’s title to Elon Musk. Musk is the CEO of the aerospace company(航空公司) Space X and electronic car company Tesla.
Time editor-in-chief(主编) Edward Felsenthal described Musk as “a person with great influence on life on Earth, and possibly life off Earth too.”
Musk’s largest influence on Earth so far has been with Tesla. Tesla controls two-thirds of the electric car market and is leading the industry in battery technology.
SpaceX became the first private company to send out a rocket into the universe and return it to the Earth. Only government organizations like NASA had done this before. Musk is also making space travel an easier thing for common people. In September, Space X sent the first all-civilian crew(全平民机组) into space.
However, Time’s choice of Musk has raised eyebrows(眉毛), as the man has come under fire for his views on taxes(税率) and COVID-19. It is found that between 2014 and 2018, Musk paid a “true tax rate” of 3.27 percent, much lower than the average US family.
In the early days of the pandemic(疫情), Musk went against government orders and reopened a Tesla factory, leading to hundreds of new cases of COVID-19.
Time noted that Person of the Year is not an award or honor, only a recognition of someone’s influence. “At 50, he has plenty of time to write the future, his own and ours. Like it or not, we are now in Musk’s world,” said Felsenthal.
31. What can we learn from Para. 1?
A. People can vote for the Person of the Year.
B. Times has been set up more than 200 years.
C. Only one person can get the title of the Person of the Year every year.
32. What is Musk’s largest influence on Earth?
A. Musk has made space travel a free thing for common people.
B. Many people were infected with COVID-19 because he went against the rules.
C. Tesla’s great success in controlling electric car market as well as battery technology.
33. Which is the first private company to send a rocket into space?
A. Tesla. B. Time. C. Space X.
34. The underline word “has come under fire” means “_______”in Chinese.
A. 遭到攻击 B. 不受控制 C. 引发火灾
35. If you want to be the Person of the Year, what is the most important thing?
A. You should have tons of wealth, power and money.
B. You should have the most influence on people’s lives.
C. You should pay a higher tax rate than the average family.

Which is the safest?
People often wonder where the safest seat in an airplane would be in case of a crash(碰撞), but what about a car accident? 36. __________________ Unluckily car accident happens much more often.
People might only take the problem of seats seriously in a highway. And it is widely believed that the closer the seat is to the driver, the more dangerous it will be. 37. __________________ The things may be different when they come to statistics(统计数字). According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the U.S., accident statistics show the middle seat in the back is the best choice.
38. __________________ The main reason is that in a side-impact(侧面碰撞) crash the outer seats are closest to the possible point of impact. So the person in the middle of the back seat sits further from that possible point.
Is the back seat always the safest in a car accident?
As with most studies, guess what, there’s another idea. 39. __________________ For example, the back seats are still proved to be the safest for children under 9 years old. At the same time, the statistics also show that for passengers aged 55 and older, the situation is quite different. 40. __________________ In fact, when in the back seat, older passengers faced the highest risk of being seriously hurt than any other age group. Not surprisingly, the researchers say more study is needed on that finding.
A. It turns out that the middle seat is the safest. B. It seems that less people know the safest seat inside cars. C. Looking further into the statistics, they find age matters. D. The back seat may be less safe than the front one. E. So most people think the back seat of a car is safer. |

On the Tower at Youzhou
Where are the great men of the past?
And where are those of future years?
The sky and earth forever last;
Here and now I alone shed(流) tears.
Traveling not only opens our eyes but also gives us a chance to think and express our feelings. On the Tower at Youzhou, written by Chen Ziang (661-702) in the Tang Dynasty, is an example.
Chen wrote this poem in 696. At that time, he was upset in his army career(生涯) under the rule of Empress Wu Zetian. He climbed to the top of Youzhou Tower and was amazed by the view of the earth and sky. He couldn’t help wondering where the great men of the past and future are.
Compared to the universe, the poet felt that people are small and unimportant. What lasts forever is the vast(广阔的) earth and sky. Nobody can be free from death. Even so, Chen still wanted to serve his country and people in his short life. But the rulers didn’t see his talents, so Chen felt sad and shed tears alone.
With the sincere(真挚的) feelings that fit the setting, Chen created a moving, sad scene in the poem. It is sad but not discouraging(令人气馁的). His language is simple but carries deep meaning. That’s why the poem is still popular now.
41. What can we get through traveling according to the passage?
42. Where did Chen see the amazing view of the earth and sky?
43. Why did Chen cry alone?
44. According to Chen, are people important compared to the universe?
45. What does the writer think of the language in the poem?

In an old building in Peking University, a yellow light shone into the old and dark hours of the night. The famous translator Xu Yuanchong was sitting behind the window and staring at the computer screen. He enjoyed working by himself from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. 66. For him, the quiet night was a valuable time to finish translation. He was exploring how to spread Chinese culture abroad by translating Chinese beauty into Western beauty.
Xu was born into a literary family in Nanchang on April 18th,1921. When he was little, 67. 热爱阅读的母亲对他产生了很大的影响。 Xu began to translate Chinese poetry into both English and French when he was still a teenager. This is why translators should have a creative mind. They are always trying to improve their translations to make sure they are correct and beautiful.
Xu’s motto is: 69. Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better, you’re your better best. Although Xu was widely considered to be the best, he never stopped trying to become better.
