一、阅读理解
Though writing by hand is increasingly being overshadowed by the ease of computers, a new study finds handwriting helps people learn certain skills surprisingly faster and significantly better than learning the same material through typing or watching videos.
Brenda Rapp, a professor of cognitive science in Johns Hopkins University, led an experiment, in which 42 people were taught the Arabic alphabet, split into three groups of learners: writers, typers and video watchers. Everyone learned the letters one at a time by watching videos of them being written along with hearing names and sounds. After being introduced to each letter, the three groups would attempt to learn what they just saw and heard in different ways. The video group got an on-screen flash of a letter and had to recognize it. The typers would have to find the letter on the keyboard. The writers had to copy the letter with pen and paper. After as many as six sessions, the writing group reached this level of proficiency (熟练) faster than the other groups.
Next the researchers wanted to determine to what extent the groups could generalize this new knowledge. In other words, they could all recognize the letters, but could anyone really use them like a professional by writing with them, using them to spell new words and using them to read unfamiliar words? The writing group was best — decisively — in all of those things.
Rapp says it’s because handwriting reinforces the visual and aural lessons. The simple act of writing by hand provides a perceptual-motor (感知运动) experience that unifies what is being learned about the letters (their shapes, their sounds, and their motor plans), which in turn creates richer knowledge and fuller true-learning.
Although the participants in the study were adults, the researchers expect they’d see the same results in children. The findings have implications for classrooms, where pencils and notebooks have taken a backseat in recent years to tablets and laptops.

For 30 years, Eddie Rankin has been driving his truck before dawn each Saturday, coming to create a treasured weekly routine for people who populated Woodley Park and who became his devotees.
The tradition ended Saturday, when Rankin unloaded his last truck filled with fresh fruit and vegetables.
“People will probably keep coming, but it won’t be the same,” said Kate Shawcross, one of Rankin’s first customers. “He knows your children’s names and where they go to school—he’s just the classic good neighbor, and here in Washington, we need some of that.”
Rankin was a farmers market pioneer, who got into farming by accident, said Bernadine Prince, executive director of FreshFarm Markets. Rankin is the co-owner of Twin Springs Fruit Farm and has witnessed the explosion of American interest in fresh produce and locally grown food.
“He’s just one of those people who are interested in you as an individual and your tastes,” said Bernadine Prince. “Think about when you go to the supermarket: Who do you talk to? Nobody. ”
In 1984, a “farmers market” consisted of some peaches, apples and cherries that the typical American might have considered as overpriced. But Rankin drew customers charmed by his huge smile and agricultural knowledge. He remembered to set aside things you asked for, would cash your check if you needed bills and gave your 10-year-old child his or her first job.
The people who came to Saturday’s market sang to Rankin, presented him with poems about his influence on their lives and told stories of good deeds he had done for them.
Many described coming to Rankin's market as a routine in their lives.
Rankin said he is retiring because he wants to spend more time traveling to see his children and a sister back in Ireland. The children of one of Rankin’s partners are taking over Twin Springs.
He has a “fantasy,” he said, of using his knowledge to help fruit-growers elsewhere in the world.
He has faith that others can keep the Woodley Park market going, that the role of a farmers market is now established.
8.People love Rankin mainly because he ________.
A.cares about customers B.always appears on time
C.sells cheap and fresh goods D.offers whatever customers need
9.Why has Rankin decided to retire?
A.Because he wants to travel around the world.
B.Because it’s time for him to realize his fantasy.
C.Because he wants to have more time with his family.
D.Because it’s time for new generations to take charge.
10.What’s the best title for the text?
A.Smile, when you meet each other
B.Goodbye, the apple of market’s eye
C.The big fish in the small-farmer pond
D.We need good neighbors in Washington

88.The Ministry of Education recently released a statement encouraging middle schools to provide Wi-Fi coverage for their students. Do you think middle school campuses should be covered with Wi-Fi?
Sheng Junjie, 17:
In my opinion, Wi-Fi should cover campuses. The Internet contains an enormous amount of information. If Wi-Fi could be used on campus, it would be more convenient for students to surf the Internet connection that had a positive influence on students’ studying, the school could work out technical tools to guide them.
Han Xu, 17:
Personally, I think that Wi-Fi coverage is not a good thing. Everyone would agree that not all information on the Internet is reliable. Students would be likely to come across awful things like false information, even violence and fraud, on the school Wi-Fi network. It would have a bad influence on the growth of students, and may even lead to more serious problems.

88.1.Recently the Ministry of Education released a statement encouraging middle schools to provide Wi-Fi coverage for students. The statement has sparked a heated debate.
Personally, I’m opposed to it. Although students can make good use of the Internet in study, it’s hard to prevent them from using the Internet for recreation. Since nowadays many students are addicted to surfing the Internet, they need a digital detox break at school. Otherwise, they would be distracted easily. Moreover, the excessive use of the network may weaken students’ ability to solve problems themselves. Students in the modern age tend to search for ready answers online instead of thinking independently. Last but not least, school networks make for the rapid spread of unsafe information on campus, which poses a threat to the normal life of both teachers and students.
To sum up, school Wi-Fi coverage shouldn’t be put into practice in a gesture to ensure a peaceful and secure school environment.
2. Recently the Ministry of Education released a statement encouraging middle schools to provide WiFi coverage for students. The statement has sparked a heated debate.
Personally, I’m in favor of it. All of us have come across such occasions when we want to search for some information but it isn’t available in the textbooks. In most cases we have to wait until we go home, but what if we have WiFi coverage on campus? A library of information is just a click away. Moreover, students can go online to acquire knowledge for themselves, thus enhancing their ability of independent learning, critical thinking and self-discipline. Still, others may be of the opinion that students may use the Internet for fun. However, with modern technology, we can easily ban some websites to exclude the possibility that some students use the Internet improperly.
So what matters is that we should educate students to use the Internet in an appropriate way, thus turning it into a useful tool that serves us best.

90. is an awkward age
