Try different restaurants in the area or visit local attractions for a change of pace. Most ski popular holiday centers close for the season in mid-April so if this is a choice, plan for the trip in March or earlier.

New York City, the Big Apple, is a great place for students that attend countryside schools. Students that live in the farm country without the noise of a large city will enjoy the action that is happening continuously, no matter what time of day or night. Like any new ninth-grader on the first day of school, Joemar Class had ninth-grader- emotion (情绪). He’s not used to school in Hartford. He’s used to going to school in his home town of Florida, used to seeing his friends, used to having class in Spanish.
“Nervioso,” he said in Spanish.
We first met Joemar in mid-October in the San Juan Airport. His father, Guillermo Class, had sold his car to buy plane tickets to get his kids and fly them up from Puerto Rico. The island was almost destroyed (毁坏) by the deadly storm—Hurricane Maria.
Now, they are settling into their new home in Hartford’s South End. A week later, using his wife’s car, Class drove 16-year-old Joemar to his first day at Bulkeley High School. After a short ride, he got out in front of his new school. Inside, he met Gretchen Levitz—the school’s program director.
“I see you have new uniform,” Levitz said. “You look great. Are you ready for a good first day? ”
Then he met couple of teachers.
“Hello” they each said in Spanish. They asked where he was from, and told him they were happy to see him. Then Levitz took him on a quick tour of the school before classes began — to her office, the school store, the library, and the dining hall.
A total of 19 languages are spoken in Bulkeley High School. “We have so many new students coming here from other countries every single day,” Levitz said. “So it’s not like he’s the only one who has that feeling.”
“You could tell he’s little worried,” Guillermo said as we left. “ But, at the same time, he’s expecting it.”
24. What kind of feeling did Joemar have on his first day of school?
A. Nervous
B. Excited
C. Annoyed

If you have ever travelled with other people, the chances are you have had to make compromises. When you want to get up early to watch the sunrise, for example, your friends may argue that getting enough sleep is more important. And when you want to try the different food, your friends might say it looks strange and push you to a Chinese restaurant instead.
This is probably why more people these days are choosing to travel alone. According to reports on holiday habits from the Association of British Travel Agents, the percentage of people in the UK who take trips alone has been increasing, from 6 percent in 2011, to 12 percent in 2017, and to 15 percent in 2018. Most of these people said they choose to travel alone because this allows them to “do what they want”.
In fact, travelling alone is only a part of a recent trend (趋势) of people wanting to take more time alone—or what’s called “me time”. “Imagine yourself as a full pot of water and everything else that asks for your attention is an empty glass. When you provide what is needed for them you are using up your own water supply,” editor Nicole Lyons wrote for the mental(心理的) health social network Psych Central. “But how are you refilling your pot? This is where your ‘me time’ comes in.”
However, it’s still quite a common belief that those who do things alone are losers and that they’re alone simply because they don’t have anybody to be with. But why can’t people just be enough for themselves?
The now Duchess of “Sussex Rachel Meghan Markle” once wrote on her blog in 2016 about how she enjoyed taking herself out to dinner and travelling alone. “It’s not easy. But it’s important,” she wrote. You should face everything and encourage yourself to move forward when the feeling of loneliness and boredom sweeps through your body and mind, according to Markle.
28. What does the underlined phrase “make compromises” probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Give in.
B. Work hard.
C. Turn up.
D. Take care.
29. Why do some people choose to travel alone?
A..To save more money.
C. To calm themselves down.
B. To enjoy their freedom.
D. To avoid troubling someone.
30. What does the author want to do in Paragraph 3?
A. To add some background information.
B. To show the way of challenging yourself.
C. To tell the importance of travelling alone.
D. To prove the necessity of the sense of loneliness.
31. What is the best title of the text?
A. Me time: enjoy yourself alone
C. .How to find a proper partner in trips
B. A new way of travelling abroad
D. The disadvantages of travelling alone
D
Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28, 000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV, Netflix or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programs. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to how much they agreed with it on a scale.
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic ( 学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
32. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study?
A. Talking about their lifestyles.
B. Introducing their after-school activities.
C. Reporting their mental states on a scale.
D. Answering questions about screen time use.
33. What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
D. Anxiety has become a very serious problem among them.
34. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
35. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B. They allow teenagers to become better learners.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They can help to improve teenagers’ mental health.

Learning that you are curious about our school’s clubs and want to join one next term, I’m writing to recommend Peking Opera club to you. My reasons are as follows.
First, joining the club can give you a taste of Chinese traditional art forms and even have a hands-on experience. Besides, the club will regularly organize various activities, which will enrich your knowledge of the opera. I hope my recommendation can be of help to you.
Best wishes!

W: Not the one from the American History Museum?
M: I’m really sorry. I was putting my plate down and my fork fell off and knocked it over.
W: These things happen, but you need to try and be more careful.
M: I know. I’ll buy a new one.
W: Don’t be silly. It’s a seven-hour flight to New York.
M: Maybe I can order one online.
W: It’s fine. It won’t be the same.
M: But I’ll try and get a same one.
W: It won’t be the same because I bought it. It reminds me of how happy we were on our last holiday. (14)
M: I’m sorry. I didn’t realize that was why it was your favorite. I thought you liked the painting on it.
W: I did. It was by an English painter. It’s fine. We’ll get another cup when we go to Italy next month. (15)
M: Will you let me pay for it?
W: Of course.
Text 10
I first joined this bank thirty years ago, at the age of only 26 years old. (17) Since then, it really has been the biggest part of my life. I met my wife, Elizabeth, while I was working here. At that time, I had only recently moved to Toronto — so there were a lot of things I didn’t know. I was born in Miami, (18) and then went to university in Washington. My father wanted me to be an engineer like him, (19) but I didn’t want that! My teachers always supported my idea of becoming a banker. Now that I’m standing here at the end of my time at this bank, I’m happy with the decision I made so many years ago. All of you have been so kind to me during my job here, and the new people have always been so nice. I want to especially thank Robert, for helping with the work in September. It’s now October, and all your help means next month will be a lot easier. (20)
