On Monday, I stopped my car in front of my daughter Juliet’s middle school. She jumped in the front seat, feeling down. She asked me to help her study for her science test.

“Dad, I need to memorise a unit about the Reproductive Cycle of Plants. And I can hardly make it.”

“You know memorising seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in tests if you work on trying to understand the material.”

Juliet was open to my advice. It was Monday afternoon and we had two nights to study before the test on Wednesday. I suggested a plan. “Tomorrow night, you are going to teach the material to me. Tonight, read the unit. Prepare to teach.”

Asking her to teach me was an unusual idea but I was determined to do it. Studies show teaching somebody else is a very useful way to learn. Even if you don’t do the teaching, the act of preparing to teach leads to more learning than just trying your best to memorise the material.

On Tuesday afternoon, Juliet sat down with her science book facing me and said, “Okay Dad, let’s study.” I wanted her to teach me. But false starts happened. I couldn’t be too hard on her. So instead we started with me asking her some simple questions. She knew some but not others. When she didn’t know the answers, I encouraged her to check the book.

She started checking things that didn’t make sense. And she was actively seeking to test her understanding. I was happy to see it. She wasn’t memorising; she was trying to make sense of things, which was exactly what I had hoped she would do.

    24Why did Juliet feel down?

ABecause she failed her science test.

BBecause she had trouble memorising a unit.

CBecause she knew nothing about planting.

DBecause she couldn’t follow her teacher.

25In the writer’s opinion, which was the key to best learning?

    AMemorising.    BTesting.    CQuestioning.    DUnderstanding.

26What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

AMaking her check the book.        BUsing simple questions to test her.

CEncouraging her to read the unit.    DAsking her to teach me the unit.

27Which can be the best title for the passage?

AA Creative Father           BAn Unexpected Test

CLearning from Teaching      DPreparing for Teaching

    C

In America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.

Even though they’ve done this already in the middle school, it’s still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school.

One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. These clubs allow students from different grades. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications (申请). The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them.

What’s more, to have a great start to a high school year, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers.

28According to the text, most students feel ________ when entering the high school.

    Aexcited    Bnervous     Clonely      Ddisappointed

29Which of the following is TRUE about the school clubs?

AThere are fewer students from higher grades in the school clubs.

BThe school clubs in high school only welcome sports fans.

CSummer activities begin before school starts.

DThe school office can help new students join school clubs.

30When do many schools take students to visit their new high school?

ABefore the eighth grade year starts.

BRight after the high school year starts.

CAt the end of their eighth grade year.

DAt the beginning of the new term in the high school.

31What is the purpose of this text?

ATo tell the new students how to learn in high school.

    BTo introduce new schools.

CTo give the teachers some advice.

DTo give advice to new high school students.

    D

Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork—everything from taking tests to researching a paper. But unfortunately, most schools don’t have classes that teach you how to take notes. So here are some tips.

Write down key facts. If you have a teacher who writes notes on the board, that’s good: You can copy them down. If not, write down the most important points from class. Does your history teacher mention the date of a key Civil War battle? Does your English teacher give examples of Shakespeare’s use of irony(讽刺)? Write them down!

Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may mention lots of dates and facts in class but only write the key ones on the board. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat a certain date or a piece of information. After a while, you’ll get to know a teacher’s style.

Don’t overdo it. Don’t go crazy taking notes. You’ll be frantic(慌乱的) if you try to write down every word that’s said in class. And if you focus too much on getting your notes right, you might miss important points. Some people actually learn better by listening, writing down a few key points, and then going over the material after class.

Ask. Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher to repeat something you miss. If the teacher is going too fast, your classmates will also be happy to hear the information again. If you don’t want to ask in class, see your teacher afterwards. It’s much easier than wondering if you got the notes right as you study.

Compare. Keep your notes handy when you’re doing your reading homework. Compare what you wrote with what the reading says—you may even want to add to your notes as you read.

32What’s an advantage of note-taking according to the writer?

AIt helps you to get good marks in tests.

BIt’s a basic skill in researching a paper.

CIt helps fix your mind on what the teacher says.

DIt gives you a better understanding of key facts.

33Why is Shakespeare mentioned in the passage?

ATo introduce the topic of note-taking.

BTo compare writing styles in different times.

CTo give an example of forming good habits.

DTo explain what a key fact is in a teacher’s class.

34What is suggested in the third paragraph?

ATeachers encourage their students to be active in class.

BIt’s helpful for teachers to learn from each other in styles.

CIt’s not always possible to note down all information in class.

DA teacher’s style should be taken into consideration when taking notes.

35What’s the writer’s opinion according to the passage?

AStudents must try to take correct and detailed notes in class.

BStudents should put down only key points while listening carefully.

CStudents must not interrupt the teacher by asking questions in class.

DStudents should put down as much information as possible in class.
