In the spring f 2013, my wife and I pened Literati Bkstre in Ann Arbr, Michigan. Opening a cmmunity-minded independent bkstre was a dream we’d shared. We were in ur late twenties, pursuing adream.
When pening day arrived, we unlcked the dr and held ur breath. One by ne, peple walked inside, paged thrugh new bks, and discussed favurite authrs. The bkstre came alive.

The first typewriter I ever fell in lve with was my grandfather’s -a 1930s Smith Crna. My memry f him is limited t impressins: visits t his Flrida apartment, beach picnics, and a fascinating black typewriter n his writing desk. One year, lng after he passed, Grandma gave me his Smith Crna fr Christmas. At the time, I was a struggling writer. Seeing his ld typewriter again stirred smething in me. His typewriter made writing fun again. And fr the first time since his death, I felt cnnected t him, t a past I never really knew.
The typewriter I set ut n pening day was a light blue Olivetti Lettera 32. I inserted a clean piece f paper and let it be: the wrld’s smallest publishing huse, waiting fr an authr. Thrwn away electrnics are piling up fast, pushing researchers t explre creative ways t reduce the resulting trash, knwn as e-waste. Nw ne team has crafted a water-activated dispsable battery made f paper and ther sustainable materials.
The wires, screens and batteries that make up ur devices are filling up landfills with dangerus pieces. “If s these small batteries that are big prblems,” says Dele Ogunseitan frm University f Califrnia, “Nbdy really pays attentin t where they end up.”
Researchers at the Swiss Federal Labratries fr Materials Science and Technlgy (EMPA) are wrking t address this verlked prblem. This week they published a paper describing a new water-activated paper battery which culd eventually present a sustainable alternative t the mre harmful batteries that are cmmn in lw-pwer devices.
After trying hundreds f frmulatins fr the different cmpnents, the scientists settled n a graphite ink t make the cathde (负极), a zinc ink fr the ande (正极) and salt-infused paper t create the electrlyte (电解液) . When the paper is dry. the battery is shelf-stable. Add just a cuple f drps f water, hwever, and the salt disslves, allwing electrns t flw. After the paper is wet, it takes abut 20 secnds fr the battery t activate. At that pint, it prduces a stable 1. 2 vlts f electricity until the paper dries ut. When the researchers rewet the paper, the battery prduced 0. 5 vlt fr mre than an hur.
Althugh the researchers demnstrated that their battery culd pwer an alarm clck, dispsable paper batteries are unlikely t replace standard AA batteries n stre shelves. Hwever, Gustav Nystrm, senir authr f the study, pictures a future where these batteries are inserted in envirnmental sensrs, ideally with ther sustainable cmpnents such as screens and packaging. Nystrm says he is in cntact with ptential industry partners and believes these batteries culd make their way int prducts within the next tw t five years.

In the spring f 2013, my wife and I pened Literati Bkstre in Ann Arbr, Michigan. Opening a cmmunity-minded independent bkstre was a dream we’d shared. We were in ur late twenties, pursuing adream.

The first typewriter I ever fell in lve with was my grandfather’s -a 1930s Smith Crna. My memry f him is limited t impressins: visits t his Flrida apartment, beach picnics, and a fascinating black typewriter n his writing desk. One year, lng after he passed, Grandma gave me his Smith Crna fr Christmas. At the time, I was a struggling writer. Seeing his ld typewriter again stirred smething in me. His typewriter made writing fun again. And fr the first time since his death, I felt cnnected t him, t a past I never really knew.
The typewriter I set ut n pening day was a light blue Olivetti Lettera 32. I inserted a clean piece f paper and let it be: the wrld’s smallest publishing huse, waiting fr an authr. The wires, screens and batteries that make up ur devices are filling up landfills with dangerus pieces. “If s these small batteries that are big prblems,” says Dele Ogunseitan frm University f Califrnia, “Nbdy really pays attentin t where they end up.”
Researchers at the Swiss Federal Labratries fr Materials Science and Technlgy (EMPA) are wrking t address this verlked prblem. This week they published a paper describing a new water-activated paper battery which culd eventually present a sustainable alternative t the mre harmful batteries that are cmmn in lw-pwer devices.
After trying hundreds f frmulatins fr the different cmpnents, the scientists settled n a graphite ink t make the cathde (负极), a zinc ink fr the ande (正极) and salt-infused paper t create the electrlyte (电解液) . When the paper is dry. the battery is shelf-stable. Add just a cuple f drps f water, hwever, and the salt disslves, allwing electrns t flw. After the paper is wet, it takes abut 20 secnds fr the battery t activate. At that pint, it prduces a stable 1. 2 vlts f electricity until the paper dries ut. When the researchers rewet the paper, the battery prduced 0. 5 vlt fr mre than an hur.
Althugh the researchers demnstrated that their battery culd pwer an alarm clck, dispsable paper batteries are unlikely t replace standard AA batteries n stre shelves. Hwever, Gustav Nystrm, senir authr f the study, pictures a future where these batteries are inserted in envirnmental sensrs, ideally with ther sustainable cmpnents such as screens and packaging. Nystrm says he is in cntact with ptential industry partners and believes these batteries culd make their way int prducts within the next tw t five years.
