Four hot chocolates from around the world
There’s nothing more comforting on a snowy winter afternoon than a steaming mug of hot chocolate. Around the world, no two cups are made the same. Here are five ways this drink is enjoyed in other countries and where to find a cup if you visit.
    MEXICO: CHILE
Mexican hot chocolate is strongly influenced by original recipes used by the Olmec, Maya and Aztec civilizations. The mix can include bitter chocolate, water, chile powder, cinnamon (肉桂) and, sometimes, vanilla (香草) . For an authentic cup, head to Mexico City’s Dichoso Cacao, a hip cafe dedicated to showcasing the country’s cocoa and hot chocolate.
    COLOMBIA: CHEESE
What makes chocolate santaferefio -the Colombian version of hot chocolate-stand out is the salty white cheese stirred in just before drinking. Colombians usually have it during breakfast and add spices like cinnamon and cloves (丁香) for a kick. Try a cup at La Puerta Falsa, one of the oldest restaurants in Bogotá, the country’s capital.
    ITALY: WHIPPED CREAM
Italian-style hot chocolate, known as cioccolata calda, is ultracreamy --like pudding. The thickness comes from using loads of chocolate, whole milk and either cornstarch or whipped cream. For a cup, head to Zàini, a100-year-old chocolate shop and former chocolate factory in Milan.
    SPAIN: PASTRY
Churros con chocolate is a syrupy (像糖浆的), slightly grainy chocolate beverage paired with greasy fried-dough sticks (churros) for dunking. You can try this classic combination anytime at Chocolateria San Gines, a24-hour cafe in Madrid that has been open since 1894.
    21. Who usually start their day with a cup of hot chocolate?
    A. Italians. B. Colombians. C. Mexicans. D. The Spanish.
    22. Where can you enjoy a cup of hot chocolate after a midnight movie?
    A. In Zaini. B. In La Puerta Falsa.
    C. In Dichoso Cacao. D. In Chocolateria San Gines.
    23. Where is this text probably taken from?
    A. A recipe book. B. A travel magazine.
    C. A biology textbook. D. An academic article.

    B
In the spring of 2013, my wife and I opened Literati Bookstore in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Opening a community-minded independent bookstore was a dream we’d shared. We were in our late twenties, pursuing adream.
When opening day arrived, we unlocked the door and held our breath. One by one, people walked inside, paged through new books, and discussed favourite authors. The bookstore came alive.
That morning, I had set out a typewriter on our lower level for anyone to use. It was a community-building experiment: What if people could walk into a bookstore and type anything they wanted?
The first typewriter I ever fell in love with was my grandfather’s -a 1930s Smith Corona. My memory of him is limited to impressions: visits to his Florida apartment, beach picnics, and a fascinating black typewriter on his writing desk. One year, long after he passed, Grandma gave me his Smith Corona for Christmas. At the time, I was a struggling writer. Seeing his old typewriter again stirred something in me. His typewriter made writing fun again. And for the first time since his death, I felt connected to him, to a past I never really knew.
The typewriter I set out on opening day was a light blue Olivetti Lettera 32. I inserted a clean piece of paper and let it be: the world’s smallest publishing house, waiting for an author. One of the notes I found that first day was: Thank you for being here. I didn’t see the typer’s identity, so it appeared as though the typewriter itself was thanking me. Soon, more notes accumulated. Typewriting had become part of our bookstore’s identity.
Customers and friends began encouraging me to turn these notes into a book. At first, I was hesitant. But then I read through the piles of messy, typewritten pages again. Some made me tear up; many made me laugh out loud. They shouldn’t be locked inside my filing cabinet at home. Inside our store, surrounded by books that have been labored over by authors, editors, and marketers, there’s a way for people to publish directly into the world in permanent ink spelling errors and all.
    24. Why did the author set out a typewriter in the bookstore?
    A. To honour his grandfather.
    B. To provide convenience to customers.
    C. To offer people a way to express themselves.
    D. To respond to community residents’ requirement.
    25. How did the author feel when he got Smith Corona as a gift?
    A. Curious. B. Amused. C. Surprised. D. Inspired.
    26. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
    A. There was a publishing house in the bookstore.
    B. The bookstore was famous for its unique typewriter.
    C. The typewritten notes were full of spelling errors.
    D. The author would publish a book consisting of those notes.
    27. What message does the text intend to convey in this passage?
    A. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
    B. Everyone can be a writer of his own life.
    C. It only takes a typewriter to be an author.
    D. Books are the ever-burning lamps of accumulated wisdom.

    C
Thrown away electronics are piling up fast, pushing researchers to explore creative ways to reduce the resulting trash, known as e-waste. Now one team has crafted a water-activated disposable battery made of paper and other sustainable materials.
The wires, screens and batteries that make up our devices are filling up landfills with dangerous pieces. “If s these small batteries that are big problems,” says Dele Ogunseitan from University of California, “Nobody really pays attention to where they end up.”
Researchers at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA) are working to address this overlooked problem. This week they published a paper describing a new water-activated paper battery which could eventually present a sustainable alternative to the more harmful batteries that are common in low-power devices.
After trying hundreds of formulations for the different components, the scientists settled on a graphite ink to make the cathode (负极), a zinc ink for the anode (正极) and salt-infused paper to create the electrolyte (电解液) . When the paper is dry. the battery is shelf-stable. Add just a couple of drops of water, however, and the salt dissolves, allowing electrons to flow. After the paper is wet, it takes about 20 seconds for the battery to activate. At that point, it produces a stable 1. 2 volts of electricity until the paper dries out. When the researchers rewet the paper, the battery produced 0. 5 volt for more than an hour.
Although the researchers demonstrated that their battery could power an alarm clock, disposable paper batteries are unlikely to replace standard AA batteries on store shelves. However, Gustav Nystrom, senior author of the study, pictures a future where these batteries are inserted in environmental sensors, ideally with other sustainable components such as screens and packaging. Nystrom says he is in contact with potential industry partners and believes these batteries could make their way into products within the next two to five years.
Crucially, Nystrom says his team created the battery without compromising on sustainability criteria. “This is work that really starts with the development of sustainable materials, “he explains. From there, he says, “I think we were able to create something that is quite useful. “
    28. What does “this overlooked problem” refer to in paragraph 3?
    A. People have no idea where e-waste goes.
    B. There are no innovative ways to reduce e-waste.
    C. People do not take seriously the batteries inside e-waste.
    D. Large quantities of electronic devices are being thrown away.
    29. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
    A. How the paper battery works. B. What the paper battery features.
    C. How the paper battery is applied. D. What the paper battery is composed of.
    30. What can we infer about the paper battery according to the passage?
    A. It is novel but costly. B. It is delicate and powerful.
    C. It can’t power all devices. D. It has gained a large market share.
    31. Which of the following might be the best title?
    A. Paper battery just add water B. Paper battery-replace standard ones
    C. Paper battery -a mainstream product D. Paper battery -the solution to pollution

    D
Amazon’s Alexa will be able to revive the voices of deceased relatives, allowing users to feel as if they are speaking to lost ones beyond the grave.
In a video shown on stage, Amazon demonstrated how, instead of Alexa’s signature voice reading a story toa young boy, it was his grandmother’s voice.
Rohit Prasad, an Amazon senior vice president, said the updated system will be able to collect enough voice data from less than a minute of audio to make personalization like this possible, rather than having someone spend hours in a recording studio like how it’s done in the past.
The concept starts from Amazon looking at new ways to add more “human features” to artificial intelligence, especially “in these times of the ongoing pandemic, when so many of us have lost someone we love,” Prasad said. “While AI can’t rid that pain of loss, it can definitely make their memories last. “
Amazon has long used AI recreations of people’s voices to voice Alexa. But they have also increasingly improved over the past few years, particularly with the use of AI and deepfake technology.
However, Amazon’s attempt at personalized Alexa voices may struggle most with the weird valley effect-recreating a voice that is so similar to a loved one’s but isn’t quite right, which leads to rejection by real humans. “For some, they will view this as creepy or outright terrible, but for others it could be viewed in a more profound way, perhaps for the first time and in a way that isn’t a strict recording from the past.” said Michael Inouye of ABI Research. He believes, however, the varying reactions to announcements like this speak to how society will have to adjust to the promise of innovations and their eventual reality in the years ahead.
The technology is also likely to lead to fears that it could be used to impersonate living people, which could be used to bypass security systems. In 2019, a manager at a British energy company lost almost£200, 000 after criminals used AI to fake his boss’s voice, directing him to transfer the company’s funds to a foreign bank account.
    32. What is the feature of the updated system of Amazon’s Alexa?
    A. It will use AI recreations of people’s voices.
    B. It will be highly efficient in collecting voice data.
    C. It will free the grandmother from reading a story.
    D. It will make a breakthrough in deepfake technology.
    33. Why does Amazon update Alexa’s voice?
    A. To make it more human-like.
    B. To cure people’s pain of loss.
    C. To remind people of lost good memories.
    D. To demonstrate Amazon’s powerful technology.
    34. What does the underlined word “impersonate” in the last paragraph mean?
    A. Interact with. B. Prove to be. C. Have command of. D. Pretend to be.
    35. What’s the author’s attitude towards Alexa’s personalized voices?
    A. Critical. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Skeptical.

You will be leaving this school at the end of this year and the unavoidable question many people will ask you is, “So, what do you want to be?” 36 But many of you still don’t have a clue! Here are some things you might want to consider.
First, does the career you are considering have staying power? Will it be in demand in 20 years? Rapid technological change is disruptive (破坏性的). 37 While many occupations are being taken over by new technology, jobs that require high-level of critical thinking, emotional intelligence and human interaction, remain in high demand. These jobs are more adaptable and not easily replaced by machines or technology.
Second, choose a career that interests you. Some people might think this is unimportant, but if you are truly passionate about your job then going to work every day won’t seem a chore. It’s also likely that you will stay and grow in this career. Before making a choice, you should examine your values, skills and personality type. 38
Third, of course you will want to consider your chosen profession’s earning power! Although high pay plays a part, you should know that a job with a big salary will likely require more time to get to the top, much more effort and a higher level of stress. 39 If you have interests outside of work, or are struggling with other demands in your life, you might want to choose a less taxing line of work.
40 Let me leave you with an old saying: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. “
    A. We need to be forward-looking at our future prospects.
    B. Some of you may have already decided on a career path.
    C. Trying different work can help you find out your favorite job.
    D. This can help you decide if a career path is a good fit for you.
    E. Only the truly motivated will likely be able to meet these challenges.
    F. People’s wages are lower in industries with slow technological change.
    G. Thinking about a life-long career at this stage in your life is surely challenging.

    A Charitable Heart
Mom had a unique perspective on being charitable that I didn’t really understand until one cold winter day when she picked me up at school.
“Who is that child? “Mom peered through the windshield as a skinny, greasy-haired girl led a crew of ragged children across the street. “They don’t even have coats. It’s freezing! “
“That’s Becky Ingler. She always looks like that, “I replied. My mother watched them move along the sidewalk. “Where are we going? “I asked as she inched along the street, keeping pace about a half-block behind the Inglers.
They entered a half-ruined store. “They live here?” Mom mumbled, looking at me. “Tell me about them.” I told her what I knew; that the Inglers didn’t have a father, and sometimes they smelled funny and everybody laughed at them. My mother nodded thoughtfully. “I think I’ll visit them tomorrow.” She turned to me and added, “I want you to come with me.” “OK.” I replied.
The next day, I followed Mom to the Inglers’ front door. A tiny, exhausted-looking woman appeared, and Mom smiled and offered her hand. “Hello, Mrs. Ingler. I’m Mrs. Tovey. I’m just visiting some of our neighbors to get acquainted. “Once inside, my mother studied each of the children surrounding unhappy Becky, who was reading a worn-out book to them. She rudely ignored my nod. Mrs. Ingler smiled politely and thanked us for our visit. Before we left, Mom told Mrs. Ingler she sincerely hoped we would see her again soon. I could not understand what she meant by that, but I soon learned.
Mom worked her old sewing machine for two days and nights. She collected coats from the donation boxes, local secondhand stores and our own closets, patching, taking in and letting out seams (缝合线). “Wow!” I said. “They’re lucky to get these.”
“No,” said Mom as she faced me. “We’re the lucky ones to be able to help them. But we need to make sure the Inglers don’t have to pay a price for them. “She then explained, “I don’t want these coats to cost them their pride or their dignity.”

    A Teacher-Student Football Friendly
Last Sunday, our school organised a friendly football match between students and teachers, in an effort to enrich students’ school life.
Bathed in sunshine, players from Grade 3 competed against their teachers in the field, with all the rest students watching excitedly in the bleachers. Both teams were playing at their best in high spirits. Although the teachers dominated the game at first, the students did not give up and tried to intercept every pass from their op-ponents. The match was filled with great dynamics and interesting plays, ending in a draw of 2: 2.
The exciting game not only helped relieve the students’ intense pressure caused by heavy workload, but also strengthened their relationship with the teachers.

Later that day, we went to the Inglers’ again. Taking a deep breath, I pressed their doorbell and the front door opened. “I hope we haven’t come at a bad time, “my mother said as we entered the smoky, little room, “but we have some winter coats here that are in decent condition from the donation boxes and I just wondered if you might know of any children who could use them. Maybe even your own children might like them. It was just a thought, so. …” Then my mother lifted a blue girl’s coat out of the bag.
Mrs. Ingler gazed at the coat, and then glanced at Becky, who was eyeing it with interest. “I’d be happy to help. “Mrs. Ingler gave my mother a knowing look. “And I appreciate you thinking of me for this. Thank you.” “Oh, please, don’t mention it. You’re doing us a favor, “my mother laughed. As we left, I glanced at Becky, who was examining the coats. She smiled at me, and her face was transformed into a Becky I hadn’t seen before. I realized I had never seen such a smile on Becky’s face. I smiled back and felt very proud of what we had done. It was on that night that I finally realized why my Mom always helped people with her kind heart.

    41-45 BCDAB46-50 ADCBC 51-55 ADBCD
I’ve brought home dogs, cats, horses, chickens, and fish”,
    47. D从后文”he dropped down”可推出作者发出的是”lie down”的指令,故选D项。sit down坐下;calm down冷静;slow down减慢速度;lie down躺下。
at a loss不知所措;on purpose故意地;in a row连续地;by coincidence巧合地。
Quincy did his first show at just six weeks old. He knew only a few tricks then. …”
    51. A从”he did them perfectly”可看出小羊的表演从没有出过状况,故选A项。
Quincy can even’read’ his tricks off cue cards’“可推出它的精彩表现赢得了观众最热烈的掌声,故选B项。
    54. C根据第一段所提及的小羊遭主人遗弃的经历 (someone dumped him over the fence) , 可以得知无人想要这只小羊,故选C项。
have it that. … 该句型同时又是一个名词从句,主句”legend has it’“和从句”he came across a steep mountain covered with dense forests’“之间缺少一个连接词,且因为从句为陈述句,故选择连接词that。
不定冠词a/an的固定搭配span/cover an area of. …o
主语为”one of the first things’“结构,根据语义推出one作主语中心语。

    (Text 1)
M: Hello. I’ve got a couple of things I’d like to try on. Where are your changing rooms? (1)
W: They are over there in the corner. There is someone in there right now. Just have a seat on the chair and look through these fashion magazines.
    (Text 2)
W: Why did you blow the whistle? I didn’t do anything, I swear! That’s so unfair!
M: I’m sorry, but you can’t touch the ball with your hands. Those are the rules! Free kick! (2)
    (Text 3)
M: Mom, I need a new jacket. Look what happened to this one. I can’t zip it up anymore. (3)
W: Oh, what a shame! You can wear your dad’s for now.
M: But Mom! That’s the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen!
    (Text 4)
W: Wait a minute! You’re not coming in this house until you dry off. I don’t want a lot of water on my floors.
    (4) M: I already left my boots outside.
W: Take off your snow pants and your jacket and hang them up outside.
    (Text 5)
M: I bet you if we take the side roads, we can avoid all this traffic and still make it to the movie on time. What do you think?
W: I wouldn’t get your hopes up. You’ll just be disappointed. We’re probably not the first people with that idea. (5)
    ★get one’s hopes up: 让某人抱有期待
I wouldn’t get your hopes up.
    (Text 6)
W: Tyler, come here. I want you to take this quiz in my magazine. (6)
    M: OK.
W: Do you know any of your friends’ birthdays?
M: Uh. . . no. But my phone does.
W: How often do you think about your friends? (7) Always, never, or only when you need them?
M: Well, I’d say mostly on the weekends when I’m looking for something to do. (7) I’m busy during the weekdays.
W: OK. And what do your friends like about you? You’re a good listener, you give good advice, or you are fun to be with?
M: I’m fun to be with, of course!
    W: OK. Now let’s see how many points you’ve got. . .
    (Text 7)
M: I just got off the phone with Peter. He invited us for a weekend at his place up north. (8)
W: Why would we want to go up there? It’s winter, and it’s freezing cold. (9)
M: You said you wanted to learn how to ski, didn’t you? Now it is the perfect time to go. (8)
W: I thought we were saving up for our trip to Europe. (9)
M: Come on. It will be so much fun! He has a nice, warm cabin up there. And he has all the equipment we need.
W: Well, I can’t say no, otherwise I’ll look bad. But you’re putting me in a tough position. I already agreed to do something with Mary this weekend. (10)
    M: She’s going, too. (10)
    W: Really? In that case. . I guess I’ll go. (10)
    (Text 8)
M: Thanks for doing this for me. (11) I really appreciate it.
W: No problem. I wasn’t doing anything else this morning, anyway. So, are you excited, or nervous?
M: A little bit of both. On the one hand, I have been looking forward to this trip for the last six months. On the other hand, it’s difficult saying goodbye to my friends and family.
W: I think it is really brave of you to make a decision like this. Not many people would go traveling by themselves. (12) How long will you be gone for? (13)
M: Just the summer. I want to be back for the start of next semester. (13) I’m starting my first year of university then.
W: Do you want me to help you with your bags and go in with you? I can leave my car here in the parking lot. (11)
M: There is no need. I just have one suitcase.
W: OK. Well, have a safe flight, (11) and don’t forget to write!
    M: Bye!
M: Hey, Sharon. I just got my results from last semester. How did you do?
W: Not bad, although I didn’t do as well as I did in the semester before that. And you?
M: The same. My grade point average dropped below 3. 4 because of this economics class I’ve been taking. W: I heard that is hard. But it isn’t that big of a deal. Anything above3. 0 is basically a “B”. I dropped down to a 3. 2 because of my history class, so I know how it feels. Luckily, I’m pretty good at my psychology class now. (15) Otherwise, it would have dropped even more.
M: I’m still getting used to the workload we have to deal with. It’s so much different from anything we experienced in high school.
W: I know. The professors are much tougher, but that is no excuse. How are your teachers?
M: They’re fine. It’s mostly my fault, I think. I have been a little confused lately, and I have to be more responsible with my time. (16)
W: Me, too. I probably shouldn’t be going out with my friends as much as I have lately.
M: For me it’s this game I’ve been playing online. I need to stop spending so much time on it. (16)
W: That’s probably a good idea. I guess we both have a lot to work on for next semester.
    (Text 10)
A truly amazing story out of Russia tonight: a small town in the Arctic has been taken over by polar bears. Funny as this might sound, this is no laughing matter. Polar bears are the biggest and most dangerous bears in the world. The incident was first reported in the town of Sturgeon Bay, a military community in Russia, about 1, 800 kilometers north of the capital. Residents are scared to leave their houses, as there are reports of over 50bears wandering around town. They have tried using their car horns and shooting guns in the air, but the bears aren’t going anywhere. As of today, there are between 22, 000 and 31, 000 polar bears spreading across the Arctic Circle. (17) But in recent years, the melting of Arctic ice has driven them closer to humans. (18) According to the World Wildlife Fund, this is no surprise. They have been monitoring polar bears and their disappearing environment for several years. Town officials even warned residents to keep their garbage inside and not to feed the bears. (19) In the end, it did not matter. Relocating them 30 kilometers away will do no good, as they will just come back. Successful relocations usually involve distances of 100, 000 kilometers or more, but where to? (20) We’ll keep you up to date with this sad and scary story as it develops.
