My daughter is a single parent, whose life is very hard because she has three young sons. She plans her money carefully and manages to get something expensive that many people can buy easily.

When her eldest son David wanted a bicycle so that he could do an after-school job, the family saved up and soon he was the proud owner of a good second-hand bicycle. One afternoon my daughter asked David to go shopping. He rode his bicycle, but carelessly left it outside the shop without putting on the lock. When David came out of the shop, it was gone. He walked home in tears and then, together with his angry mother, went to the local police station to report the theft.

Imagine their joy when they arrived at the station, a car parked out front had David’s bike in the boot (后备箱). The driver told my daughter how he’d seen a group of kids go for the bike once my grandson had gone inside the shop. The driver had called out to them to leave the bike alone. Instead, one of the kids in the group had jumped on the bicycle and ridden it away while the others followed.

The driver got in his car, drove after them and brought the stolen bike back. He was happy to be able to return it to my grandson together with a lesson about the mistake of failing to use the bike lock. Then, in all the excitement, he drove away without even giving his name or telephone number.

    24. How is the writer’s daughter’s life?

    A. Very busy. B. Very hard. C. Very simple. D. Very hopeless.

    25. David lost his bike because ________.

    A. many people stole things B. the lock was broken

    C. bikes were needed by all D. he was too careless

    26. Who helped David find his lost bike?

    A. His mother. B. A driver. C. His grandmother. D. A policeman.

    You Are What You Eat

Genetic (基因的) engineering is the scientific change of the genetic material in a living thing. It allows scientists to identify specific genes, to remove them from a living thing’s chromosomes(染色体), improve them, analyze them, and possibly clone them, and to then reinsert the changed gene into the original living thing, or a completely different living things. Unlike traditional breeding (繁殖), where a desired quality would be bred within the same kind of living things, genetic engineering can insert desired ones into living things of different kinds. Wow ... did you catch that?

Genetic engineering creates many positive contributions to agriculture. For example, by genetically engineered (GE) foods, anti-cancer agents, minerals and vitamins can be increased. Improved taste, shelf life, and better transport are all possible. Also, GE plants can increase pest and bacterial resistance(抵抗力), therefore, making the food safe for the consumers.

But some argue that the possible negative effects outweigh the positives, and critics are starting to voice their worries. Unlike Europe, in the United States labeling(贴标签)is not required on genetically engineered foods or on foods that contain genetically engineered products. Most Americans do not realize that they are, in fact, eating GE foods.

The public is also concerned about the unknown health risks. With limited understanding of genes, scientists cannot predict possible effects. Because most genes introduced into GE plants come from sources not introduced into the human body, it is impossible to know if they will cause reactions. Moreover, due to the lack of labeling, if allergies(过敏)develop, it will be extremely difficult to find the origin of them.

There is also a major moral question in many minds. For many, the conflict is not if it is safe or not, but it disturbs them because it is unnatural and unnecessary. We are currently producing one and a half times the amount of food needed to feed the world, yet one in seven people are starving. So GE food is unnecessary, and fails to address the root of hunger. Many believe that the only people who will benefit are the corporations that produce it.

Scientists cannot foresee the possible effects of GE foods, yet we eat them every day without even knowing it. We already have enough food, so why create more that could be potentially harmful to us, to the Earth and to all wildlife? I think that the benefits are amazing, but until we know for sure how these foods will affect us, they are not worth the risk.

    27. According to the passage, traditional breeding is different from genetic engineering because________.

    A. traditional breeding changes the genes in the same kind of living things

    B. traditional breeding takes place within the same kind of living things

    C. traditional breeding is more scientific

    D. traditional breeding changes the genes in different kinds of living things

    28. According to Paragraph 5, GE food is unnecessary because ________.

    A. customers will benefit from GE food

    B. we’re now producing more food than before

    C. it won’t help solve the problem of hunger in the world

    D. there are obvious dangers in producing GE food

    29. What is the writer’s writing purpose?

    A. To introduce genetic engineering’s positive contributions to agriculture.

    B. To welcome genetic engineering and GE food.

    C. To discuss the differences between GE food and other food.

    D. To tell people to keep GE food off before their influence on us is clear.

    D

For me, Facebook is about staying in touch with friends, whether that means writing on someone’s ‘wall’or sending them a private message. It’s a useful website for finding long-lost friends, arranging parties and sharing photos. But that’s not all: Facebook is now being used by all kinds of people for all kinds of reasons!

Do you want to play computer games? Log on to Facebook. There are now thousands of entertaining games and puzzles to help you pass the time. Do you want to find cafés, cinemas and bowling alleys in your area? Log on to Facebook pages that you can join and ‘like’, which makes it very easy to search for fun things to do near you. I think it’s brilliant to have all the information that you want on just one website!

People are now joining Facebook to make professional connections too, either with people who do the same kind of work, or with businesses that are looking for new people to work for them.

It’s a pretty good idea since so many people use Facebook these days, especially young people! Even students log on to Facebook to look for summer or part-time jobs.

And that’s not all! Now there are hundreds of pages about sports teams, TV programmes and pop stars to look at on Facebook. However, I believe the main reason most young people use Facebook is because it’s so easy to let the world know what you think about different things or people, whether it’s about a new film at the cinema or whether you prefer Rihanna with long or short hair. You can even write comments directly on other people’s Facebook pages including some stars’ pages. But you have to be careful because giving your opinion online can be dangerous.

We mustn’t forget that Facebook is meant to be fun and shouldn’t be used for saying bad things about people around us. I recently read a news article about a student who had to leave school because she made rude and unfair comments about a teacher on her Facebook wall. Several other school students have been in trouble for similar comments and opinions. In fact, it really annoys me when I see somebody has written nasty things about another person!

It’s true that Facebook is becoming more and more part of our daily lives for many different reasons, and it can be really helpful as well as being a lot of fun. But, as with all websites, we must be careful about how we use it.

    30. What does the writer think of the Facebook?

    A. It is easy for finding a long-lost friend

    B. It is dangerous for giving one’s opinion

    C. It is mainly used for business reasons these days.

    D. It is useful for finding entertainment information.

    31. Why does the writer think young people like Facebook so much?

    A. It’s a good place to read TV programmes reviews.

    B. They can have conversations about their interests.

    C. It’s the best place to find information about sports.

    D. They like having the chance to give their opinions.

    32. The underlined word “nasty” in Paragraph 6 probably means “________”.

    A. critical B. private C. unpleasant D. impolite

    33. What is the best title of the passage?

    A. The use of Facebook B. The information on Facebook

    C. The reasons of using Facebook D. The suggestions for using Facebook

    四、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

Do you know your neighbors? Do you often talk with them? Good neighbors are just like our friends and relatives. They are the important people in our lives. They make our lives more pleasant and give us a sense of who we are, both as an individual and as a member of the community. Here’s how to develop your relationships with these very important people in your life.

Start a conversation. Often neighbors don’t even know each other’s names. However most neighbors enjoy making small talk with each other in their community. You can ask how their kids are or what they think of the prices at the supermarket. But the best way to break the ice is to smile, wave, and say hello to your neighbors.

Be friendly to the newcomers. Your new neighbors may be feeling lonely, especially if they’re far from home, and might expect a friendly face. If they have kids, tell them where the children play in the neighborhood. Introduce the best places to eat and shop. Invite them over for coffee or tea, give them your phone number, and point to your house as you say good-bye.

Develop better relationships. Return anything that you borrow from a neighbor such as tools, in good repair and as soon as you’ve finished with them. Make sure that your car is not blocking their doorway. Such small actions will help you build up a good relationship with your neighbors.

Make time for your friendship. If you value a friendship with your neighbors, spend time with them. Why not invite them to a barbecue or weekend party? You can write a card to invite them to your party. Then, you can make a call to them ahead. In this way, you will know what your neighbors like. You can plan for proper food and music.

Care about the details. In a good relationship, it’s really the little things that count. When your neighbors carry a lot of things, you can give them a hand. Help to bring in the mail for the elderly neighbor when it rains. If you care about them, they will give you a surprise, too. The respect for your neighbors' feelings can develop your relationship with them.

    34. Are good neighbors important people in your life?

    35. What is the best way to break the ice when you meet your neighbors?

    36. To show your friendship, what should you do if your new neighbors have kids?

    37. Why do you make a call to your neighbors before the party?

    38. What is the passage mainly about ?
