Temidayo Adedokun, 31, who was born in Nigeria and now is working in America, became pregnant with her first child. She couldn’t hide her joy, and couldn’t wait to shop for baby clothes with traditional African prints that she grew up wearing.
“I was super surprised that I failed to find affordably priced African aesthetic(美学的) products that were designed from an authentic place,” Temidayo said.
Temidayo decided to take matters into her own hands. At first, she focused on creating clothes just for her baby. But then, she put some of them on a website to see what happened.
The feedback she got gave her just enough confidence. She figured she’d make the baby clothes an after-work side business to her full-time position as a lawyer in Oakland, California, until one day she was told she was given a boot. Once again, she needed to make her own choice. That’s when she decided to make it a full-time job.
“I had to evaluate: Am I going to search for another job I don’t have a great desire for?” she said. “Or am I going to take this as a chance? I’m not sure myself. After all, I’m not familiar with this field. What if something unexpected happens? However, for the symbols of children’s clothing in my heart, I threw myself into it. So I chose the latter.” Then, in March 2020, Temidayo officially announced her own brand: Ade +Ayo.
Since then, Temidayo has received much praise from other African parents informing her that her clothes help them start having conversations with their kids about what they’re wearing and allow them to show their children the treasures handed down by their ancestors. And, for those who aren’t African, her clothes have been a way for parents to introduce their kids to a new and colorful world. “I feel very blessed to be able to be doing this,” she said.
24. How did Temidayo feel after trying to buy African aesthetic clothes?
A. Pleased. B. Confident.
C. Stressed. D. Disappointed.
25. What does the underlined phrase “given a boot” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Dismissed. B. Promoted.
C. Well-known. D. Accused.
26. What did Temidayo originally think of her creating her own brand?
A. It was innovative. B. It was profitable.
C. It was risky. D. It was trendy.
27. What can we learn about Ade +Ayo?
A. It’s created African aesthetics.
B. It’s spread authentic cultures.
C. It’s targeted overseas Africans.
D. It’s inspired people’s creativity.

You have probably heard that trying to multitask is a terrible idea. One main reason is that our neural(神经的) wiring does not allow us to split our attention: when we try to deal with two things at once, all we actually do is switch our focus back and forth between them, which decreases our performance, as many studies have shown. The consequences can be deadly: texting while driving is more dangerous than drunk-driving.
Even magicians use a “divide-and-conquer” approach to the audience’s attention, forcing us to split our focus by overwhelming(使应接不暇) our processing ability — which in turn makes us much less able to figure out the hidden methods behind the magic.
All in all, the evidence is there that you shouldn’t multitask. But new scientific data suggest that you should tell yourself you’re multitasking — even if you’re not. The lie might improve your performance.
The research tested 8,242 participants across a series of 32 studies. Scientists randomly assigned participants in each of the experiments to either a multitasking or a single-task condition. All the participants in each experiment performed exactly the same tasks. Only the descriptions of each task, or the participants’ expectations, differed between the two groups.
In every study, people who were told, or led to believe, that they were multitasking, performed better than those who thought they were conducting a single task. Pupil dilation(瞳孔扩张) was similarly larger in the multitasking than in the single-task group, supporting stronger focus and participation in the task.
The results — the authors clarify — do not mean that the well-documented harmful effects of actual multitasking are wrong. Rather, they indicate that it is the perception(观念) of one’s multitasking that can positively affect performance. For instance, one way in which I tried to increase my productivity while writing this passage was thinking of it not as a single task, but as multitasking between its many components: reading the original report, understanding its conclusions, making sense of the data figures, choosing the proper words, etc. It largely came down to re-structuring the task.
28. What prevents people from multitasking effectively?
A. Mental stress.
B. A small knowledge reserve.
C. The lack of operational ability.
D. A limitation in the brain function.
29. Why is the magician example mentioned?
A. To show how to attract attention.
B. To show the importance of concentration.
C. To show it’s difficult to concentrate for long.
D. To show trying to split our focus leads to bad performance.
30. What do smaller sizes of pupils indicate?
A. Higher levels of tiredness.
B. Higher levels of motivation.
C. Lower levels of attentiveness.
D. Lower levels of nervousness.
31. What’s the main purpose of this text?
A. To show the harm of multitasking.
B. To clarify whether multitasking is good or bad.
C. To explain how to deal with several tasks at once.
D. To introduce a way of tricking ourselves into doing better.
D
Some research shows that people drive faster and break more traffic laws while listening to fast, exciting music. Other studies suggest that listening to fast, loud classical music can reduce reading comprehension, while relaxing music often leads to better scores on intelligence tests.
A recent study examined how people invested fake coins while listening to low-tempo music, high-tempo music or no music at all. The results of the study are published in the preprint journal SSRN.
For the study, researchers asked 63 participants to listen to a suite of instrumental songs from various genres, and to rate how calming or arousing they considered each genre and song. After tallying(记录) the responses, the researchers chose the two pieces of music that participants rated most calming or arousing: a Deadmau5 mix of electronic music, and a relaxation mix from a new-age musician named Karunesh.
The participants were split into two groups — each of which listened to either the Deadmau5 mix or the Karunesh mix — and asked to complete two financial investment scenarios. The first scenario was a lottery in which participants could choose to invest in a risk-free asset with a guaranteed return or a high-risk, high-reward asset(资产). In the second scenario, participants had to choose how they’d diversify their funds between three assets, each of which offered a 50-50 chance of getting one of two rates of return.
In both scenarios, people who listened to the fast-tempo Deadmau5 mix made safer financial decisions. Interestingly, people also made safer investments when they subjectively felt that the music “disturbed” them, as opposed to “helped” them.
Why? The researchers suggested this might be explained, in part, by past findings showing that fast-tempo music can overload our working memory, which has been shown to make us less likely to take risks.
Of course, what may “disturb” one person might have entirely different effects on someone else. With that in mind, the new study doesn’t necessarily suggest you should put on Deadmau5 when rearranging your stock portfolio(股票组合).
32. What can we know about music according to Paragraph 1?
A. It contributes a lot to reducing car accidents.
B. Fast-tempo music is linked with high intelligence.
C. It has a positive influence on people’s social skills.
D. It changes the way people engage with everyday activities.
33. What’s the purpose of the study?
A. To discuss how people benefit from listening to music.
B. To investigate which type of music can ease emotions.
C. To suggest putting on Deamau5 while making financial decisions.
D. To study if background music affects people’s financial decisions.
34. How does the fast-tempo music affect people’s financial decisions?
A. It helps to relieve people’s tension.
B. It makes people less likely to take risks.
C. It misshapes people’s concept of investment.
D. It changes people’s financial management skills.
35. What can be inferred about “disturbing” music?
A. People are rarely conscious of its existence.
B. People perceive it differently and subjectively.
C. It has little to do with people’s financial decisions.
D. It should be avoided when we rearrange our stock portfolio.

Naoki Teraoka, a railway model enthusiast in Osaka, Japan, opened a restaurant in 2018. It’s a miniature(微型的) railway model-themed ramen eatery(拉面馆) where people could not only try delicious food but also admire the miniatures around them. However, the COVID-19 pandemic(新冠肺炎疫情) exhausted him and his family physically and mentally. He was ready to shut the business down and give up everything since there were not enough customers to maintain the business.
Luckily, an unlikely helper in the form of a stray kitten(流浪猫) appeared.
It was June 10th, 2020, when Naoki noticed a dying baby cat that was around 10 days old next to his restaurant. Naoki took the dying red cat home and brought it back to life! Naoki decided to raise the animal and named him Simba. The protection of blind baby cats has begun.
The next day, Naoki saw another cat that was peeking(窥视) out of the window. It would come every day to look into the restaurant. It was Simba’s mother. Naoki started feeding the mother leftovers due to the lack of customers. Naoki remembered that it was raining every night from the end of June to July. On one of the rainy days, the mother cat brought three of her other kittens.
This cat family and Naoki decided to “live together” and start a new life. It continues with the story of opening the next door.
Every day after the restaurant was closed, Naoki opened the cage door so that the cat family could play in the back room. One morning when Naoki came to work, there were no kittens in the cage in the back room! There was a cat straddling(跨坐) the miniature railroad track. It was as if all three kittens were playing well in the railroad park. “If they live here, I will try to be a cat uncle and live with peace of mind.” Naoki told Mr. Hiramatsu, a daily sports reporter from Fukuoka Prefecture. The cats quickly made themselves at home by lounging on all of Naoki’s miniature train models.
Para. 1: It was then that Naoki decided to change the concept of his restaurant and rebuild it. _______________

Para. 2: In 2021, as a way to thank his fluffy helpers, Naoki opened a cat shelter and a cat-only hotel on the second floor of his restaurant. ______________________

第一节
The Sports Activity I Like Best
There’re various kinds of sports activities, including ball games like basketball, football, table tennis, as well as other activities, such as swimming and horse riding. Among them, I like horse riding best.
First of all, horse riding is very challenging. There’s no doubt that people who can ride the horse can conquer the horse, which can make me not only excited, but also brave. Besides, horse riding can keep me fit. It is a good way to help me relax and reduce my pressure.
Therefore, of all the sports activities, I like horse riding best.
第二节
Para. 1: It was then that Naoki decided to change the concept of his restaurant and rebuild it. Naoki made a big decision. He replaced some of the models’ parts with stronger materials. He started posting photos of the new “crew” on Instagram. And videos like “Good boys can’t enter the railroad tracks” continued being uploaded. It led to people showing up from all over Japan to see the cats and his business is thriving. The cats will come to customers when they order food and stay with them until they finish their meal.
Para. 2: In 2021, as a way to thank his fluffy helpers, Naoki opened a cat shelter and a cat-only hotel on the second floor of his restaurant. People can also visit the cat hotel and spend up to two hours there while drinking tea and interacting with the cats. Visitors can also ask for adoption if there’s a pet they make a strong connection with. “It was a financially difficult time for us, but we decided to help the cat family. Yes, we thought we were helping them, but they were the ones who helped us,” says Naoki.
根据What is KidZania?下的“KidZania is an interactive kid-sized city combining fun and learning through exciting role-play guided activities”可知,KidZania是一个互动的儿童规模的城市,它结合了乐趣和学习,通过令人兴奋的角色扮演引导活动。根据How does this “kid-sized play city” work?下的“KidZania Manila combines learning(education) and fun(entertainment) to help kids learn life skills...” What do you mean by role-play?下的“From police officers to dentists to cooks, KidZania Manila offers 100 role-playing activities...kids pick an occupation...”
What do you mean by role-play?下的第二段“with which they can pay for goods and services in the KidZania city”可知,孩子们可以用kidZos在儿童模拟生活公园里进行消费。
根据第一段 “She couldn’t hide her joy, and couldn’t wait to shop for baby clothes with traditional African prints that she grew up wearing.” 再根据第二段“I was super surprised that I failed to find affordably priced African aesthetic products that were designed from an authentic place”可知,“我非常惊讶我没能找到价格合理的非洲美学产品,这些产品是在真实的地方设计的。”
25. A。 根据画线部分上下文 “She figured she’d make the baby clothes an after-work side business to her full-time position as a lawyer in Oakland, California...That’s when she decided to make it a full-time job.” 再根据第五段 “‘Am I going to search for another job I don’t have a great desire for?’”
根据第五段 “‘Or am I going to take this as a chance?I’m not sure myself. After all, I’m not familiar with this field. What if something unexpected happens?”
根据最后一段 “her clothes help them start having conversations with their kids about what they’re wearing and allow them to show their children the treasures handed down by their ancestors. And, for those who aren’t African, her clothes have been a way for parents to introduce their kids to a new and colorful world.”
根据第一段“...split our attention: when we try to deal with two things at once, all we actually do is switch our focus back and forth between them, which decreases our performance,”可知,试图分散我们的注意以便同时处理两件事会降低我们的表现。
根据倒数第二段 “Pupil dilation was similarly larger in the multitasking than in the single-task group, supporting stronger focus and participation in the task.”
根据第五段 “In both scenarios, people who listened to the fast-tempo Deadmau5 mix made safer financial decisions.”
42. B。根据下文第四段“Kirsty ... cries ‘I’m sick!’. ‘Be sick! ’... ‘Then eat your cabbage. ’ She stands over the poor girl. ‘Chew!! NOW!
43. C。车牌“AMI 2 FAT”音同“Am I too fat?”,这是一个问题。
44. A。根据上文“One guest called Kirsty”可知,Kirsty是减肥酒店的一位客人,她来减肥的原因是“bought her wedding dress two sizes smaller... the big day approaches.”
45. A。根据下文“Kirsty is shaking”和下文第四段“cries ‘I’m sick!’”
46. B。根据上文“is shaking”和下文“I’m sick!”
48. D。根据下文“‘Then eat your cabbage.’ ... ‘Chew!! NOW!
51. A。根据下文“and won’t have their next meal until 1 pm the following day.”
52. B。根据下文“All guests are required to do a two-hour walk every day.”
53. D。根据下文“Well, her fans, including the actress Lisa Riley, say that it creates miracles.”
55. B。根据上文“Our record is 26 pounds in one week”可推知,Galia说:“我们的记录是一周26磅。”

Text 10
My name is Mary. I’m from America and I’m seven years old. There were three people in my family before, but recently twins were born by my mother. We are very happy. My mother looks after the new babies, so I have to go to school by school bus. One morning, my family clock stopped and when we got up, it was too late for me to catch the school bus. My father said he would drive me to school on his way to the office. But my father had only been to my school once. I asked my father whether he could find the way. My father said that I had been to the school by school bus seven times and that I could know the way. I thought he was right. And then we started out and I asked my father to turn one way or another on our way to school. At last I made my father drive round most of the town before we got there. When we arrived, my father found it was not really very far from my house. My father asked me why I made him go such a long way. I said, “Dad, I know only this way. The bus always goes like this so that the other children can take it to school.”
